Scarce and Desirable First Year Production Winchester Model 1873

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 874)

Scarce and Desirable First Year Production Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Takedown Rifle

Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rimfire rifle manufactured in 1884, the first year of production for the .22 Model 1873 rifle. The Model 1873 was the first Winchester firearm chambered for the .22 rimfire cartridge and the first .22 caliber repeating rifle. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office Search Form that describes it as a rifle, caliber .22 with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The Cody form states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 3, 1884. The rifle has the Winchester commercial blue finish on the octagon barrel, full length magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the scarce takedown pin feature. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style rear sight with serrated edges. The magazine tube has the early style heavy stop ring. The rifle has the Third Style receiver with integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The receiver has the "step" at the front edge found on .22, 32, and 38 caliber firearms. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "22 CAL." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "22 CAL/SHORT" is roll-stamped in script letters in two lines on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the model designation: "- MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the rear tang screw and the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall. The blue finish has faded slightly and slight finish loss on the barrel edges. The contact points on the magazine show traces of plum brown patina. The receiver has edge wear on contact points and some scattered age spotting, but has most of the bright blue finish. The dust cover retains about 80% of the blue finish. The trigger and lever have strong case colors. The right side of the hammer has some finish loss. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a silver gray patina. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition; the forearm shows some finish wear and the stock has a number of shallow handling marks concentrated primarily on the lower left side. This is a very fine example of a scarce and important Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rifle.

Venditti Lever Action Pistol

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 7 of 874)

Extremely Scarce Venditti Lever Action Pistol

This extremely rare lever action pistol is one of an estimated 100 manufactured by the Italian maker Venditti of Lancusi. The pistol is similar to the American Volcanic pistol as it uses a lever action mechanism to feed cartridges from a tube magazine into the breech and fires a similar self-contained cartridge. Venditti manufactured these pistols in the mid-1850s with the limited production run halted because Venditti was imprisoned for murdering a man in a brawl. Released in the 1870s, Venditti attempted to once again produce his pistol, but by then the design was obsolete. The top barrel flat is marked "VENDITTI E CI LANCUSI." This marking is flanked by factory engraved scrollwork. The scrollwork extends to the top of the frame, frame sides at the front, and side plates. The back strap is engraved with scrollwork and a geometric line pattern. The frame is brass with iron side plates. The pistol has fixed sights, an Italian proofed (crown over shield) frame, and a 10-shot tubular magazine. The two-piece grips are checkered and have engraved screw escutcheons. A swivel ring is mounted on the rounded butt.

Class: Antique

Very good. The brass has a very attractive smooth honey patina. The remaining metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina mixed with limited light pitting/spotting. The engraving is clear. The magazine spring is missing. The undersized grips are very good with some minor handling marks and re-cut checkering. Mechanically fine.

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 874)

Desirable Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Pocket Pistol

The barrel top is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB 14, 1854", indicating that the pistol was manufactured after Volcanic's reorganization in April of 1857 and the formation of the New Haven Arms Company. The company was formed to continue production of the former Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. These pistols were produced in 30 caliber and used the same basic frame as the original Volcanic. The frame is decorated with floral scroll patterns and scallop bordering. The serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel and the matching number is stamped on the inside of each panel. The pistol has a blue barrel, casehardened lever and trigger with a brass frame, pinched blade front sight and dovetailed fixed iron rear sight. Fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips. Production of these scarce pistols ran from 1857 to 1860.

Class: Antique

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with traces of original blue finish in protected areas. The brass has been cleaned at some time and remains relatively bright. The slightly undersized grips have been refinished and remain good with a small chip on each heel and toe, some wear on the lower edges and a few minor handling marks. The markings and engraving are clear. The lever is a bit loose, otherwise the action is fine.

Documented Rare New Haven Arms Co. Bavarian Contract Henry Lever

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 874)

Documented Rare New Haven Arms Co. Bavarian Contract Henry Lever Action Rifle with Book

This is an exceptionally rare example of a Henry Rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company for the Kingdom of Bavaria in late 1864 or early 1865 as part of a 500-rifle contract. At present, less than ten examples are known with eight verified which are numbers 71, 181, 212, 217, 300, 325 (this example), 331, and 471. The Bavarian Contract Henry Rifles were the first attempt by Oliver Winchester to improve the magazine and loading gate on the Henry rifle. These components were considered to be the Henry's primary weak points as a military weapon; the magazine slot was easily fouled by dirt, the light-weight magazine tube was easily dented and the loading gate at the end of the barrel was delicate and susceptible to rusting in place. The Bavarian Contract Rifles utilized a heavier magazine tube with a sliding loading gate 6 1/2 inches below the end of the magazine tube. These rifles featured a 27 1/2 inch round barrel with an iron block mounted front sight and a Henry style folding leaf rear sight dovetail mounted on an iron block just ahead of the receiver. The left side of the barrel had two iron tubes for a cleaning rod and the left side of the receiver was slightly flared and threaded to retain the cleaning rod. A sling swivel was fitted to the right side of the stock and a block-mounted iron loop for a sling hook was located on the right side of the barrel/magazine 12 inches below the muzzle. The Bavarian contract rifles retained the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate. The brass buttplate has the round heel found on early Henry rifles but lacks the hinged butt trap. The hammer, lever and stock were the same as standard Henry rifles. The barrel lacks the two-line New Haven Arms Co. address found on Henry Rifles. The serial number, "325", is located on: (1) the left side of the barrel below the rear sight, (2) face of the brass magazine follower, (3) left side of the loading gate, (4) inside of the loading lever, (5) side of the lever latch and (6) bottom of the buttplate. The partial serial number "25" is visible on the heads of the rear upper tang screw, both buttplate screws and one sling swivel screw. The other screws appear original but the markings are obscured by pitting. The stock was not removed to check for serial numbers on the receiver and stock. Two "Crown/L" Bavarian proofmarks are stamped on the right side of the receiver at the junction with the barrel. The initials "L.H." are stamped on the left side of the barrel below the serial number. A "Crown/L" proof is stamped on the left side of the hammer. The Bavarian contract Henry rifles are extremely rare and represent an important step in the evolution of the Henry rifle to the Winchester Model 1866 rifle. All of the aforementioned information was found in the excellent book by Herbert Houze, "Winchester Repeating Arms Company" on pages 18-28. The book is included with the lot.

Class: Antique

Very good. This rifle is in the original configuration with moderate service wear. The barrel and integral magazine have an even, deep brown, patina with traces of light pitting and surface corrosion. The front and rear sights are original to the rifle. The serial numbers and proofmarks on the barrel are light but legible. The hammer, trigger and lever have a deep brown patina with scattered light pitting with light but legible serial numbers and proofmarks. The brass receiver and buttplate remain in fair to good condition with an untouched patina. The receiver side plate joints are tight. The receiver and buttplate have numerous minor dents and scratches with scattered spots of age discoloration. The walnut stock is in fair condition with a hairline crack on the right wrist, several chips on either side of the tang and at the buttplate heel and numerous dents and handling marks. The sling swivel has a dark patina and the base and screws are pitted. This is a solid and complete example of an extremely rare and historically significant variation of the Henry rifle.

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .40-72 caliber, plain trigger and Lyman front and receiver sights when received in warehouse on January 23, 1897, and shipped on November 2, 1898. The rifle has a blue finish on the distinctive flat side, receiver, barrel, loading lever and magazine. The hammer, trigger, loading lever linkage and crescent buttplate have a casehardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The distinctive Model 1895 forearm has a factory, ebony, insert. The 26 inch octagon barrel has a Lyman 'Winchester Express" front sight with white bead and a sporting style rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman "WR-WT" receiver sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. -" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-72 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is marked: "WINCHESTER/- MODEL 1895 -" in two lines. "PAT. NOV. 5. 1895/-NOV. 12. 1895-" is stamped in two lines on the trigger linkage behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped on the lower barrel tang. The flat-side receiver was used only on the first 5000 Model 1895 Rifles; examples in high condition are scarce.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The rifle retains nearly 95% of the original blue finish on the barrel, bolt and high polished blue flat-side receiver. There is some minor finish loss on sides of the loading lever and the magazine. The hammer, trigger and trigger linkage have at least 90% of the dark case colors. The casehardened finish on the crescent buttplate has aged to a dark patina. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition with most of the original varnish finish. Wear is limited to some very minor handling and storage marks. All of the barrel and receiver markings are sharp. This is an outstanding example of an early production, Model 1895, Flat-Side, Lever Action Rifle.

The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The stock has a solid steel crescent buttplate. The top barrel flat has the two-line legend and "32 W.C.F." "- MODEL. 1873.-" is on the upper tang with foliate devices at either end. "32 CAL" is on cartridge elevator.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% plus blue finish with some very insignificant loss on the edges and the finish on the bottom of the magazine thin and faded slightly to a plum. Nearly all the blue is on the barrel band, and 70% blue remains on the forearm cap. The receiver has 95% bright original high polish blue with some edge wear, several minor scratches and handling marks and some scuff marks on the dust cover rail. The once pried dust cover has several light scuff marks and dents. The loading gate has 90% plus fire blue finish. The hammer, lever and trigger have 80% case colors. The buttplate is covered with an old coat of varnish but appears to retain 95% case colors. The wood is excellent retaining nearly all of the original finish; wear is limited to few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is an excellent example of a 1891 production Winchester Third Model 1873 Rifle.

Very Fine Documented Winchester "Centennial Model" 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The Cody letter describes this rifle as: "Rifle, 45/60, Octagon barrel" and "Plain trigger". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 11, 1882. This rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The rifle has a full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and sporting style folding leaf rear sight graduated to "10" and marked "1876" on the top of the leaf below the elevator bar stop screw. A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The crescent steel buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 45-60" is stamped in script letters on the top barrel flat immediately ahead of the receiver. "45-60" is stamped in script numerals across the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, bolt and crescent buttplate have a blue finish. The loading gate is fire blue. The hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a semi-gloss oil or varnish finish.

Class: Antique

Very fine. 85% plus of the original blue is present on the barrel and magazine with some very minor spots of surface discoloration and some finish wear on the barrel edges, muzzle and barrel band. The barrel markings are sharp. The forearm cap has about 90% of the blue. The receiver has 80% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish with some scattered age spotting and a few minor scratches. Significant wear is limited to several small areas of pitting on the lower left side plate and lower edge of the receiver near the lever screw. The dust cover has at least 95% of the blue and most of the blue is present on the bolt. The loading gate retains 75% of the fire blue finish. The buttplate has 80% of the blue with scattered age discoloration and some pitting on the edges of the toe and heel. 60% of the case colors are present on the hammer, lever and trigger with some minor finish loss on the lever contact points. The stock is also in very fine condition and retains nearly all of the oil finish with minimal handling wear. The finish on the forearm shows contact wear, but the forearm is generally free of scratches and handling marks. This is a superior example of a Winchester Third Model 1876 Sporting Rifle.

Very Rare, Documented, Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Mod

Lot # 3018 (Sale Order: 19 of 874)

Very Rare, Documented, Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Three Digit Serial Number 530 with Factory Letter

Deluxe, special order, Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1874. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes "Model 1873, serial number 530", as: "Type: Rifle, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 24 inches, Trigger: Set, Checkered stock, Sights: Peep and Beach sights, Casehardened, Sling-Swivels" and "Target: 2-1/2". (This "Target" notation in the letter is the predecessor idea that led to the eventual marketing of the famed "One of One Thousand" rifles!) The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 10, 1874. This rifle has the very desirable First Model receiver with grooved dust cover guides and a dust cover with highly desirable raised, checkered, 'thumbprint'. The full-octagon barrel has a correct dove-tail mounted steel sporting style front sight and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with knurled edges installed with the front of the sight facing the receiver. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped and has over-size screws in the tang sight mounting holes. The receiver has a factory single set trigger. Factory eyelets for removable sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The crescent steel buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a semi-gloss finish and the first style Winchester checkering with a scalloped border on the wrist at the receiver wrist junction. The stock has the very rare "perch belly"/extra drop configuration. The barrel and magazine are blued. The loading gate has a fire blue finish. The forearm cap, frame, dust cover, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number, "530" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. There are, correctly, no caliber markings on the barrel and cartridge elevator. Winchester First Model 1873 rifles are rare in any configuration: first year production rifles with deluxe, special order, features and finishes are almost non-existent. Writer does not recall ever seeing an earlier example of a Deluxe 1873!

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle shows moderate wear and retains 30% of the original blue and traces of original color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have light edge wear with significant amounts of blue in protected areas; the balance is a smooth, plum patina. The barrel legend is clearly legible. The case colors on the forearm cap have a dark, mottled, patina. The case colors on the receiver, dust cover and lever have faded to a smooth, silver-gray, patina with scattered, minor spots of age discoloration. Small amounts of the original case colors are visible in protected areas of the receiver. Most of the case colors are present on the hammer and trigger. The buttplate has a dark patina with significant amounts of dark surface rust on the bottom. The loading gate has about half of the original nitre blue finish intact. The tang sight mounting screws are present (without base). The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm remain in very good overall condition with scattered, minor, handling marks. The checkered panels show moderate handling wear. This is a very good example of an extremely rare, first year production, First Model 1873 Rifle with numerous special order features.

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 20 of 874)

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The included Cody letter describes this Model 1873 as: "Rifle, 381 caliber, Plain trigger, Sights: Lyman and Beach sights" and "1/2 magazine" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on August 5, 1885. There is no mention of half octagon barrel, but it appears correct. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail. The dust cover has serrated edges. Fitted with a gold-plated Beach folding combination front sight, buckhorn sporting style rear sight and Lyman folding combination tang sight marked: "PAT. MAY.6/84" on the base. The stock and forearm are nicely grained American walnut with the Winchester high polish "extra finish" used on rifles with special order features. A small brass compass is hand fitted in the stock comb 1 1/2 inches in front of the buttplate. The top barrel flat has the two-line address/patent dates marking and "38 CAL." "38 CAL" is roll-stamped in script characters across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is roll-stamped in script numerals on the lower tang. It is very unusual to have special order sights identified in Winchester or Cody factory letters.

Class: Antique

Very fine. 97% of original the blue is present on the barrel, forearm cap, and dust cover. The loading gate has 95% of the original nitre blue finish. The receiver and side plates retain most of the blue finish with only very minor handling wear. The magazine tip, hammer, trigger and lever have nearly all of the casehardened finish. The buttplate shows storage wear and retains about half of the mottled blue-gray finish. The stock and forearm are very fine with 90% of the high polish Winchester "Extra Finish". The stock shows a few minor scuff marks and shallow dents primarily on the right wrist. The compass on the stock comb is a period, obviously novice, installation and does not detract significantly from the overall quality of this scarce and well-documented special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle.
