Converted Springfield 1869 Trapdoor Pistol

Lot # 143 (Sale Order: 159 of 846)

Elaborate copy of the rare Model 1869 Trapdoor pistol utilizing a Model 1879 receiver produced in 1880 & chambered in 45-70 Government. Fewer than 50 Model 1869 pistols were ever produced, they were built for field trials upon request of General W. Sherman. It is estimated that only 7 or 8 original pistol exist to this day, leaving a void in some collections, which leads to well constructed copies such as this. This pistol features a blued & case hardened finish, 8.25" barrel, custom large blade front sight, 'u' notched rear sight, "1863" dated lock, knurled hammer spur, shortened trigger, custom full length metal backstrap and walnut stock with round metal grip cap. Markings: Barrel - none. Receiver: "DEC/1869" over the chamber & "135580" on the rear flat. Breechblock: "U.S./MODEL/1869" Lock: [eagle/crossed arrows], "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" & "1863" on the tail. The barrel bears an old refinish which has drifted to a brown patina and shows two filled in screw holes likely from the rear sight in its original configuration. The backstrap & grip cap are finished in-the-white and the screw heads on the left side of the pistol appear to be ground down. The majority of the remaining metal surfaces have turned to a nicely age grey patina with some case colors present on the bottom of the breechblock and a darker patina observed on the trigger guard & hammer. Action is sound, the three land bore is very good+ with some scattered light rust and the wood stock is very good+ with a minor loss beneath the thumb piece. Condition is NRA Very Good as altered. ***Antique Firearm***

Includes a board stock with unmarked metal and an attached period black leather double magazine pouch. Pistol retains approximately 80% of it's original finish showing holster wear and some finish thinning to patina. Action is crisp, the bore is excellent, optics are fair and the wood grips are very good with minor blemishes & some worn points. Condition is NRA Very Good++. ***C&R Firearm***

Original Bronze of Bull by George Phippen

Lot # 156 (Sale Order: 174 of 846)

Signed on base, measures 9 1/2"l x 4 3/4"h x 3"w. From Prescott and Skull Valley, Arizona, George Phippen, raised on farms in Iowa and Kansas, was a sculptor and painter in representational style of western genre, figures, and horses. He is best remembered for his bronze sculptures such as "Cowboy in a Storm". When George was serving in World War II, he taught himself to paint and then went to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he worked with artist Henry Balink for several months. At first he worked as an illustrator and commercial artist, doing Christmas cards and calendars, and in 1948 began fine-art painting with oils. According to Don Hedgpeth in his 1972 article for the OS Ranch Committee, Phippen was called " 'The Cowboy's Artist' because his 'cowboys look like men we have known. They aren't handsome but they sure did now cow.' " (Samuels 372). One of his sculptures, 'Wimpy' was commissioned in 1958 by the King Ranch in Texas to commemorate its first registered quarter horse. The work is in the collection of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. George Phippen was one of the founders and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America and began his career as a self-taught illustrator. He then established a ranch, studio, and foundry in Skull Valley, and when he died of cancer in 1966. His wife then wrote about his career.
