Poured wax shoulderhead, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, bl...moreonde fleece-curled wig, original kid body with horsehair filling, kid-over-wooden upper arms, bisque hands and arms to above the elbows, pull-string "mama" crier in torso, wood-ball articulated knees, bisque lower legs and feet. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (Rohmer stamp on torso). Comments: Leontine Rohmer, one of the earliest dolls from her small studio firm; in her 1858 depose she noted that her dolls could have heads of various materials, and it is clear from her various depose registrations that her concern was with the design of the doll body and its various possible articulations. Value Points: extremely rare variation of the sought-after Rohmer poupee, the poured wax head having classic French cobalt eyes, and the signed body with superbly modeled bisque hands and feet, wearing lovely early silk costume.

Value Points: superbly preserved condition of the early poupee with flawless complexion, very firm body, wearing original traditional costume of Ile de Re in the coastal Charente region of French, comprising patterned cotton dress, petticoat, stockings with original garters, hand-stitched black silk shoes with textured carton soles, chemisette, green silk fichu, and outstanding coiffe consisting of a muslin calotte under an elaborate outer lace coiffe with carton armature "wings" and long lace streamers ("braids"). Inside the base are wooden mechanical works and music box, and when the handle at the side is turned, merry music plays and the dolls dance about. Excellent condition, minor paper rubs on exterior. Germany, mid-1800s, probably for the French market. A rare musical mechanical toy of great charm.

Each has sculpted earthenware head with superb detailed facial features and hair, painted facial features, hemp wrapped body, sculpted fingers...more in expressive poses, sculpted lower legs with attached or painted footwear. Condition: generally excellent, original finishes well preserved, some light dustiness of costumes, one finger tip chipped. Comments: Neopolitan, early 1800s, the dolls were designed as village people for the elaborately-fitted holiday scenes created by aristocratic Italian families at the time. Value Points: each doll is wearing its very luxe original silk costume embellished with embroidery and metallic trim, including woman with orange head band, woman with red hair scarf, baby in taufling costume, and man with bag pipe.

Rare Early 18th Century Carved Wooden Doll, Walking Mechanism, Provenance 12,000/17,000

19" (48 cm.) Wooden head doll with oil-painted over gesso complexion and features, enamel inset eyes and distinctive character expression, on kid-skin covered shaped tors...moreo, wearing (frail) original costume of pale blue green silk over homespun linen with metallic trims. The torso rests upon metal rods that attach to the heavy clockwork motor; the motor is constructed of hand-wrought iron work including wheel rims, governor bracket, governor flywheel, escape gear and pinions. When wound, the doll turns her head from side to side, moving her arms, and gliding in a series of circles and forward; the steering wheel can be positioned to follow a wide or close circle, or to make a straight run. Condition: original painted finish and costume albeit very worn, mechanism intact and functioning. Comments: European, possibly Augsburg, early 1700s. Value Points: very rare early mechanical doll, with extensive provenance and reference. Provenance: ex-collection of Paul Gendre of France, the rare piece was earlier owned by the noted French painter and collector Jules Cavailles. In the book, Les Automates, by Jean Prasteau (Grund, 1968) the author relates how he visited the atelier of Cavailles to view his famous collection, spotted the Carved Walking Woman and declared it "la pice la plus remarquable de la collection". The piece was also discussed and photographed in Les Automates by Eliane Maingot (Hachette, 1959).

Rare American Toy "Our New Clergyman" by Automatic Toy Works 2500/3500

11" (28 cm.) Standing behind a lectern on a wooden platform with original gilt stenciled red painted finish is a sculpted black man with defined hair, mouth carved open a...mores though speaking, glass eyes, wooden block torso, hinged wooden legs, metal hinged arms, remnants of original costume; when wound, he leans forward and back, waving his arm, as though preaching. Condition: very good, original finish, mechanism functions. Costume frail. Comments: the toy was issued by Automatic Toy Works of New York, circa 1885, in two variations, this example named "Our New Clergyman, Brudder Gardner" in their catalog with the humorous note "he preaches as long as any preacher ought to, and stops when he gets through". A series of comic vaudeville speeches was published in the early 1880s featuring Brudder Gardner, inspiring this rare toy.

When key-wound, the figures dance about in a carefree manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Automatic Toy Works of New York, founded by Robert Clay in 1868 and later purchased by Ives, Connecticut, circa 1880, who presented this model. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved early American toy, original finish, costumes and decoration on both dolls and the box exterior.

Cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features and hair with wispy side curls, stitched ears, painted brown eyes with dark iris rims, black eyeliner...more, lightly-stroked brows, closed mouth with hint of gentle smile, stitch-jointed fabric body with oil-painted stiffened hands and lower legs, separate thumbs, painted black ankle boots with red rims, antique costume is original. Condition: original painted finish with typical craquelure, re-varnish to shoulderplate. Comments: circa 1865, Izannah Walker, the Pawtucket, Rhode Island doll creator obtained a patent for her dolls in 1873 but likely had been making them for some time, of which this doll is an example of the earlier models. Value Points: sought-after American doll, a keynote of any collection not only for its position in doll history, but also for its pervading gentle presence.
