Colt - Delta Elite

Lot # 2000 (Sale Order: 1 of 950)

Documented Cased Factory Master Engraved John Adams Signed Colt Mk. IV Series 80 Delta Elite Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the serial number, finish, factory scroll engraving, grips, and September 26, 1989, date of shipment to Sile Distributors of Meriden, Connecticut, as 1 of two guns shipped for Horace Greeley IV. The letter further states that this is the lowest standard production serial number for this particular model. Horace Greeley IV (1935-2003) was the great great grandson of renowned 19th century American journalist Horace Greeley (1811-1872), the founder and editor of the New York Tribune. Greeley IV was a U.S. Army airborne veteran and noted firearms author who wrote the book "The Colt U.S. General Officers' Pistol." His fascination with the American West at an early age led him to collect and research Colt firearms. In 1997, Greeley IV auctioned off his impressive Colt collection which represented nearly 150 years of Colt history. Standard Delta Elite markings and features with an overall bright nickel finish, fine scroll engraving on the slide and frame, and finely checkered grips with inset Delta medallions. The left side of the frame is signed "J. Adams" in fancy script under the grip panel. With fitted walnut factory case.

Scarce and Desirable First Year Production Winchester Model 1873

Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 2 of 950)

Scarce and Desirable First Year Production Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rimfire rifle manufactured in 1884, the first year of production for the .22 Model 1873 rifle. The Model 1873 was the first Winchester firearm chambered for the .22 rimfire cartridge and the first .22 caliber repeating rifle. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office Search Form that describes it as a rifle, caliber .22 with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The Cody form states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 3, 1884. The rifle has the Winchester commercial blue finish on the octagon barrel, full length magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the scarce takedown pin feature. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style rear sight with serrated edges. The magazine tube has the early style heavy stop ring. The rifle has the Third Style receiver with integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The receiver has the "step" at the front edge found on .22, 32, and 38 caliber Model 1873s. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "22 CAL." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "22 CAL/SHORT" is roll-stamped in script letters in two lines on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the model designation: "- MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the rear tang screw and the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall. The blue finish has faded slightly and slight finish loss on the barrel edges. The contact points on the magazine show traces of plum brown patina. The receiver has edge wear on contact points and some scattered age spotting, but has most of the bright blue finish. The dust cover retains about 80% of the blue finish. The trigger and lever have strong case colors. The right side of the hammer has some finish loss. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a silver gray patina. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition; the forearm shows some finish wear, and the stock has a number of shallow handling marks concentrated primarily on the lower left side. This is a very fine example of a scarce and important Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rifle.

The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains crisp traces of the blue finish. The balance of the blue finish on the barrel magazine, forearm cap and loading gate has a deep brown patina with occasional minor spots of surface discoloration. The barrel legend is light but fully legible. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have a mottled, plum brown patina. The buttplate has a dark patina with some dark surface rust and some scattered pitting at the heel. The brass receiver is in very fine condition with tight side plate joints. The receiver has some light scratches and handling marks. The brass has an attractive age patina. The stock and forearm are in good-very good condition and show moderate handling wear. There is a one-inch hairline age crack in the left side of the stock near the toe of the buttplate, and the edges of the forearm barrel channel are slightly rounded from handling. This is a good looking, all original example of the iconic "Yellow Boy". Probably no long arm is more closely associated with the Western Frontier than the Winchester Model 1866 rifle.

One of a Kind, Deluxe, Special Order, Factory Panel Scene

Lot # 2004 (Sale Order: 5 of 950)

One of a Kind, Deluxe, Special Order, Factory Panel Scene Engraved, Gold Inlaid Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle with Telescopic Sight and Factory Letter

This one-of-a-kind rifle features Winchester No. 4 engraving with gold inlaid bands on the receiver and barrel and Winchester Style D carved and checkered fancy grade walnut stock and forearm. The engraving was probably executed by master engraver John Ulrich. It features an animal scene with a hunter and two bull elk on the left side of the receiver and a grizzly bear on the right side of the receiver. This exact engraving and stock carving are illustrated and described in the 1897 edition of "Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Highly Finished Arms" reproduced on page 224 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The 1973 dated Winchester Museum letter describes "Winchester Model 94, serial number 29262" as "Rifle, caliber 30,, 1/2 octagon barrel, set trigger, 1/2 magazine. Takedown. Fancy pistol grip stock carved style "D". Engraved and gilt (?) Matted barrel. Gold plated finger lever, hammer, trigger and tip. Swiss buttplate. Lyman rear sight cup disc and Lyman front sights. Shipped July 22, 1898, no other information listed". This fancy sporting takedown rifle features an off-set mounted telescopic sight with blued 18 1/2-inch tube and nickel-plated eyepiece. The maker's name: "JOHN W. SIDLE/PHILA./PA 440" is roll-stamped on the left side of the tube ahead of the eyepiece. The scope tube has an external elevation adjustment on the rear mount. The mounts, base and rings are undoubtedly factory engraved with scrollwork and zig-zag patterns that generally match the engraving on the receiver. The rifle has a 1/2 octagon barrel and 1/2 magazine. The barrel has a matted top and is fitted with a Lyman folding combination front sight and a "Winchester Express" rear sight with three folding leaves with platinum sight lines. A Lyman folding combination sight with disk and short knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has a Winchester adjustable, close coupled double set trigger. In addition to the oak leaf/acorn relief carvings and checkered panels, the stock is fitted with a special order, gold-washed, brass Swiss buttplate. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber buttcap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel, magazine, receiver and bolt are blued. The forearm cap, hammer, triggers, lever and Swiss buttplate have a gold-washed finish. The highly figured, deluxe, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm have a high gloss piano finish. The left side of the barrel flat is engraved with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "30 W.C.F." located on the left barrel flat in an engraved panel. The serial number, "29262", is engraved across the forward edge of the receiver bottom. This rifle is almost certainly has more special order features than any other Model 1894 rifle ever manufactured. The addition of a telescopic sight in addition to the No. 4 factory engraving and gold inlays, Style D relief carved stock and forearm Swiss buttplate, matted barrel, double set triggers and other rare special order features make this a one-of-a kind Winchester Model 1894 rifle.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall on the barrel, magazine and receiver and 50% of the factory gold trim overall. The highly detailed game scenes on the receiver sides and the arabesque scrolls, fancy border and line work on the receiver, barrel, forearm cap, hammer and lever are crisp. The delicate gold-wash finish on the forearm cap, hammer, set triggers, lever and Swiss buttplate shows wear and about 30% remains. The telescopic sight and mounts retain 80% of the blue finish. The telescopic sight optics are cloudy. The highly figured, fancy grain, walnut stock and forearm retain more than 85% of the original piano finish. The relief carved oak leaf and acorn motifs and fine checkering are sharp. Wear is limited to several minor dents and scratches concentrated primarily on the right side of the forearm. This deluxe Model 1894 takedown rifle is superb example of the numerous special order features and finishes available on turn-of-the-century Winchester rifles. The variety of special order features and finishes, in combination with the telescopic sight, make this a truly one-of-a-kind Model 1894 rifle that would be a centerpiece of any collection of deluxe Winchester lever action rifles.

J. Ulrich Signed Engraved & Inlaid Winchester Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 2005 (Sale Order: 6 of 950)

Spectacular and Well-Documented John Ulrich Signed, Factory Grade No. 1 Engraved, Gold and Platinum Inlaid Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Style "A" Carved Stock and Factory Letter

Offered here is a fully documented work of firearm art by the renowned Master Engraver John Ulrich. This is a spectacular example of Ulrich's work and a testament to Winchester craftsmanship at the beginning of the 20th century. As indicated by the accompanying Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter and copies of the original Winchester factory ledger, this rifle was initially shipped on February 29, 1904, with a round barrel in .33 caliber, plain trigger, takedown configuration, half magazine, fancy pistol grip stock, shotgun butt, hard rubber buttplate, style "A" carving, and a $100 engraving and inlay. Note that the factory ledger references the embellishments as "a new design by Mr. Ulrich." Master Engraver John Ulrich has signed his masterpiece on the lower tang just behind the trigger: "J. ULRICH." The rifle was reshipped several times for exhibitions and displays. "Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle No. 129666 belongs to the extremely rare and desirable category of factory embellished firearms used for special shows and exhibitions. Only a handful of these are known to collectors today," states noted firearm historian R.L. Wilson in his included letter of analysis for this rifle. Wilson notes "that because the arm was intended for promotion and display purposes, extra pains were taken in its preparation," such as coverage on the hammer, bolt and lever, platinum inlays and grape leaf foliate scrollwork. Based on the 1904 return dates listed in the factory ledger this rifle was possibly showcased at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair, held in St. Louis, Missouri, from April 30 to December 1, 1904. At this exposition Winchester had an exhibit in the Palace of Manufactures. Also with a 2000 dated receipt and authentication letter for this rifle from LeRoy Merz of Merz Antique Guns. The rifle is documented in R.L. Wilson's "Steel Canvas" on pages 177 and 242 and "The Official Price Guide to Gun Collecting" (incorrect serial number listed) as part of the color photo section and was featured in a major international loan exhibition by the Royal Armouries Museum. The rifle's engraving pattern is illustrated and described in the "Winchester Highly Finished Arms" catalog reproduced on page 221 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The Ulrich engraving features highly detailed gold inlaid animal scenes that depict a mountain goat and a bear on the right side of the receiver, two moose on the left side of the receiver, and a stag head on the underside of the receiver. The inlaid scenes are surrounded by engraved grape leaf and foliate scrollwork highlighted by gold and platinum borders. The bolt has engraved and gold inlaid borders with scrollwork and platinum highlights. The engraving and gold inlay extends to the hammer (both sides and back) and lever. The takedown collar and barrel breech are decorated with scrollwork and gold and platinum inlays. The muzzle has engraved scrollwork flourishes and a gold band. The forearm cap features engraved scrollwork flourishes with gold inlaid borders and platinum accents. The highly figured, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm feature the "Style A" carving illustrated in "Winchester Highly Finished Arms." The pistol grip and forearm featured highly detailed, relief carved scrollwork with leaf accents. The pistol grip has a hard rubber factory buttplate and grip cap. The rifle is equipped with a beaded blade Lyman front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The barrel has the two-line address ahead of the rear sight, the two-line nickel steel marking on the left side, and "33/W.C.F." at the breech. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886-" which is outlined by scalloped engraving with gold inlaid accents. The Winchester 1884 and 1885 patent dates are on the lower tang behind the trigger. The serial number is engraved on the lower tang in script numerals behind the tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retaining 90% plus original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is exceptionally fine showing minor handling evidence, retaining most of the original finish, and crisp checkering and carving. Mechanically excellent. An impressive and well documented John Ulrich masterpiece that will be a grand centerpiece in even the most advanced Winchester collections.

New Haven Arms Volcanic Silver Plated No.1

Lot # 2006 (Sale Order: 7 of 950)

Desirable Factory Deluxe Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Silver Plated No.1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol with Patriotic Motif

Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa 1857-1860. The pistol has a silver-plated frame decorated with the open scrollwork used on factory engraved Volcanic firearms and large United States shields in the center of both side plates. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The pistol has the distinctive brass frame with octagon barrel and integral magazine and finger hole loading lever. The barrel/magazine are blued. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The barrel has a steel front sight, and a fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The hammer has a knurled spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14.1854" in two lines. These markings were adopted by the newly formed New Haven Arms Company after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number is stamped on the lower left side of the frame underneath the grip, and "568" is stamped on the inside of both grips. The Volcanic pistols and carbines are extremely important firearms. They represent a key step in the development of both self-contained cartridges and repeating magazine firearms. The toggle lever action utilized on Volcanic pistols and carbines eventually evolved into the action used on the successful Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles and carbines. The reorganization of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. into the New Haven Arms Co. was the beginning of Oliver Winchester's involvement in firearms manufacturing and the beginning of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Class: Antique

Fine overall. The barrel shows some bright original blue with the balance a blue-gray patina with clear markings and a few small spots of surface discoloration. Most of the silver plated finish is present on the frame with some edge wear on contact points. The frame and side plates have a few minor handling marks. The engraving is crisp. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a somewhat gray patina. The grips are very good overall with some finish loss on the heels and a few minor handling marks. This is an excellent example of a later production New Haven Arms Co. No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol with silver-plated frame and unusual and desirable American patriotic factory engraving.

Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 2007 (Sale Order: 8 of 950)

Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Deluxe Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1866. The receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel feature a New Haven Arms factory engraving with large scrolls and floral sprays on a punch dot background and double line scalloped borders. Very similar factory engraving on Henry rifles is illustrated on pages 22 and 23 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. This style of engraving is believed to have been executed by Samuel Hodgson who did most factory engraving for the New Haven Arms Company. The barrel has a German silver blade front sight, a period replacement elevation adjustable rear sight in which a dovetail has been added, partially covering the two-line patent date/address marking and the serial number "12617" at the breech. The original dovetail has had a filler installed. The serial number is repeated on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet ("617") and buttplate. There is a hole on the top tang for a now absent sight and two drilled and tapped holes on the left side plate. A four piece steel cleaning rod is included. The left side of the barrel and buttstock have a factory loop for a sling hook and sling swivel respectively. Mounted on a highly figured straight grip stock.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth brown-gray patina. The brass has an attractive patina. The stock is very good with a hairline crack near the upper tang and a number of dings and scratches. Mechanically good.

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Briggs Patent Henry

Lot # 2008 (Sale Order: 9 of 950)

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Briggs Patent Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is an extremely rare example of a Briggs Patent Henry Rifle that was manufactured c. 1866. The Briggs patent was one of several experimental loading devices designed to improve the Henry rifle. George F. Briggs designed and patented several variations of a sliding magazine tube for the Henry rifle which permitted cartridges to be loaded into the magazine immediately ahead of the receiver. Briggs patented his design in October 1866 and subsequently assigned the rights to manufacture the device to Oliver Winchester. Nelson King patented the hinged receiver loading gate and spring loaded magazine tube in March 1866 and had already assigned the rights to Winchester when Briggs patented his magazine. "King's Improvement" formed the basis for the Winchester Model 1866 rifle. Winchester probably purchased the Briggs patent to eliminate potential competition with the Model 1866 rifle. Several variations of the Briggs Patent Henry rifle were manufactured, but the rifle was never placed in production. This unique rifle utilizes a Henry receiver, stock and buttplate combined with a 24-inch round barrel and 24-inch fixed magazine secured by two barrel bands. The base of the magazine has a checkered loading gate which can be turned to the left to expose the loading port and load the rifle. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and three-leaf carbine style rear sight with "100 YDS, 250 YDS" and "500 YDS" markings and heart-shaped piercing in the center. A folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has a dovetail and circular indent with threaded hole for what appears to be a Volcanic rear style sight. The hammer has border-less knurling on the spur. The stock has a late style Henry brass buttplate with sharp heel and a hinged brass trap. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands are blued, and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock is a deluxe, highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a piano finish. "026-09-8226" is lightly electro-penciled on the bottom of the buttplate. This is a modern marking; the rifle has no visible serial numbers or factory markings. At least three other distinct variations of the Briggs Patent Henry rifle were manufactured, but the rifle was never placed in to production. Surviving examples of Briggs Patent rifles are extremely rare. The Briggs Patent Henry rifle is a direct predecessor to the Winchester Model 1866 rifles and carbines and a key piece in an advanced collection of Winchester lever action rifles.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The original blue on the barrel and magazine tube remains 40% intact with the balance heavily faded to a smooth plum-blue patina. The barrel bands show contact wear. Significant amounts of blue finish are present on the bolt. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 60% of the subdued case colors. The attractively aged receiver is in excellent condition with minimal handling wear and perfect side plate joints. The buttplate is also in excellent condition with minimal wear. The highly figured, fancy grade walnut stock is in excellent condition and retains close to 90% of the original high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling marks. This is a splendid example of an extremely rare and historically significant experimental Briggs Patent Henry Lever Action Rifle. Provenance: Warren Anderson Collection; The Robert M. Lee Collection.

Fine Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

This is one of approximately 1,000 carbine manufactured by Oliver Winchester's New Haven Arms Company between 1857 and 1860. These carbines are scarce and historically important; both as one of the first successful repeating arms to utilize a self-contained cartridge and as the forerunners of the Henry and Winchester lever action rifles. The barrel has a blade front sight and is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN PATENT FEB.14.1854," the marking adopted by the New Haven Arms Company after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The receiver has a dovetail mounted sporting type rear sight featuring a thumb wheel elevator and niter blue finish. A factory floral scroll engraving is featured on the sides of the receiver, and the engraving extends to the upper tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked "50." "50" is repeated on the three tang screws, the two buttplate screws and buttplate.

The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting Front Sight" with bead and sporting style rear sight with flat-top profile. A 1905 Lyman folding combination sight with locking button is mounted on the upper tang. The hammer and lever have nearly all of the muted case colors. The barrel markings are extremely sharp. The fancy grain stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition. The checkered panels are sharp and nearly all of the high polish piano finish remains. This exceptional Winchester Model 1866 carbine was manufactured c. 1867. This carbine has the distinctive First Model "Flatside" brass receiver which lacks the flare at the junction with the forearm, has the same receiver drop in front of the hammer as the Henry rifle and has two upper tang screws. The receiver has the early flat loading gate secured by two screws. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, in the upper stock inlet, and on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw. All of the visible serial numbers match. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The carbine has a 20-inch barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has the early style upper barrel band with integral front sight blade. The first style, two leaf, carbine rear sight has a round 300 yard aperture and 500 yard center notch. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S-PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The hammer lacks a half-cock feature and has border-less, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The brass, Henry style, buttplate has a sharp heel and hinged butt-trap door. The butt-trap contains a three-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with numbered sections and fine knurling on the flared handle. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade, walnut with a piano finish. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands have a blue finish, the loading gate and bolt are nitre blue and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. In "WINCHESTER BOOK" author Howard Madis estimated that the total number of First Model 1866 rifles and carbines manufactured at approximately 3,500 guns equally divided between rifles and carbines. He further estimated that the survival rate for these early Winchesters was about 25% and that "less than 875" First Model 1866 rifles and carbines were available to collectors. Madis also noted that deluxe stocks are rare on Model 1866 rifles. Deluxe features of any find are seldom found on Winchester carbines.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine has dulled slightly from age but remains 40% intact. The barrel legend is faint but fully legible. 50% of the nitre blue finish is present on the loading gate and traces of blue remain on protected areas of the bolt. The barrel bands have a mottled gray-brown patina. The hammer and trigger retain 60% of the muted original case colors. The lever has about 50% of the case colors and has aged to a mottled plum patina. The distinctive brass receiver and buttplate are in very fine overall condition with a good-looking patina. The receiver side plate joints are excellent and wear is limited to a few scattered scratches and handling marks. The buttplate is in very fine overall condition with a few minor handling marks. The fancy grain, burl walnut, stock and forearm are both in very fine condition with minor scattered handling marks. 90% of the original piano finish remains intact. This is a very fine example of an extremely rare Winchester First Model 1866 Flat Side carbine with, seldom encountered, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm.

Lot # 2014 (Sale Order: 15 of 950)

Very Fine Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Winchester Museum Curator T.E. Hall Authentication

Manufactured in 1884 as a third model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. As confirmed by the accompanying records confirmation authored by Winchester Museum curator T.E. Hall in 1971, this rifle originally left the Winchester factory with several special features. According to Hall, the Winchester factory ledger lists this rifle with an octagon barrel, set trigger, casehardened receiver, checkered pistol grip stock and shotgun butt (all features present on the rifle) when shipped on February 15, 1884. No mention is made of the half magazine which is obviously an oversight as it is undoubtedly factory. The barrel has dovetailed blade and elevation adjustable rear sights and is marked with the two-line address/patent dates information on the top flat ahead of the rear sight. The rifle correctly lacks caliber markings. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" and is flanked by floral flourishes. The highly figured pistol grip stock has an ebony grip insert and a blued steel shotgun style buttplate.

Exceptional Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 2015 (Sale Order: 16 of 950)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

This extraordinary Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine was manufactured circa 1902. The accompanying factory letter confirms the carbine configuration in 38 caliber and it was received in the warehouse on September 6, 1902, and shipped on September 8. The left side of the receiver is fitted with a staple mounted saddle ring. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The carbine style buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor and the butt trap contains a jointed, three-piece, steel cleaning rod with steel tip. The caliber designation"38 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "38 CAL" is stamped in script letters across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL. 1873.-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, dust cover and saddle ring have a blue finish. The loading port cover is nitre blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened with muted case colors. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a low-luster oil finish.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. The barrel and magazine retain 97% of the original blue finish. The barrel markings are near perfect. The receiver has 95% plus of the bright original blue finish with some very limited surface wear. The dust cover shows some minor flaking but has a strong 90% plus of the original blue. The left side of the receiver in contact with the saddle ring shows minimal finish wear which is consistent with the nearly new condition of the carbine. The loading gate cover retains close to 98% of the nitre blue finish. The hammer, trigger and loading lever show nearly all of their strong, deep original case colors. The buttplate retains 75% plus of the original casehardened finish. The stock and forearm remain in excellent plus condition and have nearly all of the original oil finish; wear is limited to several minor bruises on the upper right side of the stock near the buttplate due to storage. This is a really exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1873 carbine. Winchester carbines were usually considered "working" guns and inevitably show the effects of many years of hard use. Model 1873 carbines in new or nearly new condition, like this example, are extremely rare.

Scarce U.S. Contract Civil War Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 2021 (Sale Order: 22 of 950)

Scarce U.S. Contract Civil War Henry Lever Action Rifle

Scarce example of one of the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in December 1863 from the New Haven Arms Company. These rifles were issued to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment (1st D.C. Cavalry). The 1st D.C. Cavalry was utilized for provost duty in the District of Columbia under the direct control of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In early 1864 the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to combat Confederate partisan rangers led by Col. John S. Mosby operating in northern Virginia. The 800 Henry rifles in the 1st D.C. Cavalry contract are in the 3000-4000 serial number range. These are the only Henry rifles marked with Ordnance inspection marks on the stock and barrel. This rifle has the distinctive brass buttplate and receiver and the 24-inch barrel and integral 15-shot magazine that identify standard production Henry rifles. The second style receiver introduced around serial number 3000 lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry rifles manufactured in 1862 and 1863. The first pattern crescent buttplate, used until about serial number 5100, has a rounded heel. The barrel has a half moon, nickel silver front sight blade and replacement folding leaf rear sight with slide stop screw and center notch at the top of the leaf. The magazine has the correct large diameter follower, and the receiver has the late beveled follower slot. The rifle has a straight grain American walnut stock. The buttplate has a hinged trapdoor. The left side of the stock and barrel, correctly, are not fitted with a sling swivel and sling loop which were special order features not included on most U.S. contract Henry rifles. The "C.G.C." initials of Ordnance Inspector Charles G. Chapman are stamped on the right barrel flat at the junction with the receiver. A single "C" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the side of the barrel below the "C.G.C." mark. The "H" New Haven Arms inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry and an Ordnance "C" sub-inspection mark are stamped on the right side of the frame adjacent to the "C.G.C./C" marks on the barrel. A small "C" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right heel of the buttplate at the junction with the stock. The oval, script, "C.G.C." Ordnance final inspection mark applied to U.S. contract Henry rifles is not visible on the right stock wrist due to handling wear. (This mark was stamped in a location that typically received handling wear and is rarely visible on U.S. contract Henry rifles). The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. This style address was utilized through the mid-late 3000 serial number range and had "NEWHAVEN" in the second line stamped in block letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. The hand fitted buttplate screws are serial numbered but rust has made the numbers on the shanks illegible - the screw serial numbers almost certainly match the rifle serial numbers. The U.S. contract Henry rifles issued to the 1st D.C. Cavalry saw hard service when the regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac during the Petersburg Campaign in the summer of 1864. Several hundred of these rifles were captured during engagements with Confederate cavalry. The bodyguard of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was armed with captured Henry rifles when he fled Richmond during the closing days of the war. Although most of the Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., during the Civil War are believed to have been purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the firepower offered by the advanced Henry rifle; the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department on December 31, 1863, were the only Henry rifles with Ordnance inspection marks issued during the Civil War. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was the only unit in the Federal army armed entirely with government issued Henry rifles during the Civil War.

Class: Antique

Fair. The rifle shows the wear expected of a combat weapon. The barrel/magazine has a deep brown patina with scattered light pitting and occasional nicks and scratches. The barrel edges are round from handling. The New Haven Arms legend, serial number, Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks on the barrel are light but fully legible. The rear sight which is a modern replacement and the converted bolt. The receiver has an un-polished patina and shows moderate-heavy service wear. The upper edges of the side plate joints are battered. The side plates and sides of the receiver have light scratches and scattered patches of ag

Nearly all of the vibrant original nitre blue remains on the loading gate, and 98% original case colors remain on the hammer, lever and buttplate. The wood is very fine showing some chipping along the grain near the stock toe and some scattered minor dings. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet has mostly a bright appearance. A high condition Model 1873 musket perfect for your growing Winchester collection!
