18OMC-1 COLT S.A. #111422

Lot # 263 (Sale Order: 303 of 772)

Colt Single Action Army revolver in .45 Colt Caliber with a 5 ½” barrel, nickel finish, carved pearl grip, factory engraved, shipped Aug. 28, 1884 (Number of same type gu...morens in shipment listed as 1). Under remarks “23 specially embellished single action shipped to Simmons on noted date”. Also a study of the Colt Single Action revolver by Kopec, Graham & Moore states in chapter VII “23 engraved single actions shipped to Simmons on this date”. Reached from 8900 to 111,400 range. This Colt S/N 111423. Due to the very ornate and deluxe 1 of a kind engraving it is our opinion that this Colt was a display piece for exhibition purposes possibly by Ulrich and most similar to Fruend Colt S/N. Note the barrel length as 4 ¾” in letter and most likely recording error. The engraving is tight and fine with vignette of Bobcat on recoil shield and buffalo on the top of the back strap. The hammer shows “Wolf” like panel engraved centennial Colt. The barrel address is hand cut in extra-large and fancy block letters. The hammer spur is finely knurled deluxe. There is a banner of the left side of the barrel with florals. The grips are nicely carved and of same era but are numbered by scratched in marking 117638. Number 379 N is marked on the left interior of the backs trap and on loading gate arm denoting factory repair or refinish. The revolver retains 95%-98% factory nickel and if refinished it was excellent at period refurbish as was often the case with factory display guns. Nice fire blue screws. Crisp and sharp overall. It is this cataloger’s opinion that this was a very special single action that may be recorded in newly discovered special order ledgers. (Antique) Est.: $12,500-$25,000
