C. Sharps & Co. Philadelphia Pistol Rifle Model

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 17 of 24)

.31 cal. (bore meas. .310" land to land) s/n 444, rifle, brl length 26" octagonal, lever activated falling breech block, very good condition, Manufacturing of the pistol ...morerifle started in 1856 at the Fairmount "Wire Bridge" Rifle Works after production of the single shot pistol all but ended. The first 50 or so were experimental and built on the left over large frame pistol actions. At this time however it was found that the wrist was to weak and needed to be redesigned before moving forward with full production in 1857. Mechanically similar to the single shot pistol having a cylindrical breech block to facilitate ease of production and a pellet primer. The serial number is located right side of the loading lever. "C.SHARPS/PATENT/1848-52" is marked left side of receiver flat. This example of the Sharps pistol rifle is very rare in that it has an octagonal barrel while most other examples are of the round barrel type. The barrel has a mottled brown patina throughout with nice edges, a dovetailed silver blade front sight and twin dovetailed rear adjustable sight. The bore has very nice shine with strong rifling. The case color hardened finish on receiver has a majority of original finish with thinning on edges as well as on other areas most notably the left side rounded portion. There are a few scattered tool marks either side with slight indentation left side bottom edge. The remaining metal surfaces show a dark brown mottled finish except for the forend cap and butt plate which are of the German silver type along with the barrel lug and escutcheon. Most screw heads show turn tool marks, with a few tool marks left side of heel on butt plate. There is a hole in the center of the butt plate that is approximately .300" in diameter and 7" deep into the butt of the stock. Smooth walnut pistol grip stock and forend have a nice varnished high gloss finish that shows a few light scattered indentations, a repaired crack at the front top right side of the forend, a small loss right top side at wrist where it meets the frame and left side of the wrist either side of the retaining screw both approximately 1" in length. The wooden cleaning rod is 19.25" long .265" in diameter with a brass tip and is mounted with an iron band .828" wide retained by a small lug underside of muzzle. There is a small indentation left side barrel flat at muzzle almost unnoticeable but present. With no factory record available it is believed that between 1856-1860 approximately 600 rifle pistols were produced as noted before this is a very rare example having an octagonal barrel in very good condition for it's age.
