Andy Warhol: Cherub and Cat from In the Bottom of my Garden series

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 22 of 492)

Andy Warhol (American 1928-1987)Attributed: Cherub and Cat from In the Bottom of my Garden series. Ink on paper signed verso circa 1950s. Unframed. This work represents Warhol's ink blot technique.

Blotted line combines drawing with basic printmaking. Warhol began by copying a line drawing in pencil on a piece of non-absorbent paper such as tracing paper. Next he hinged this piece of paper to a second sheet of more absorbent paper by taping their edges together on one side. With a fountain pen Warhol inked over a small section of the drawn lines. He then transferred the ink onto the second sheet by folding along the hinge and lightly pressing or blotting the two papers together. The process resulted in the dotted broken and delicate lines that are characteristic of Warhol's illustrations
9.5 x 11.5 inches.
Private collection Hungary
Good condition: ink smudges stains surface acretions pinholes discoloring along the edges. On the reverse on the right side of the paper are indications of tape marks. This is part of the process of his blotted line technique.

Antoni Tapies: Abstract Collage Painting

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 23 of 492)

Antoni Tapies (Spanish, 1923-2012) Manner of: Abstract Collage Painting, Mixed media on canvas, Signed lower left. Framed.

Dimensions: 20 x 22 inches/ 22.5 x 24.5 inches

Throughout the span of his life Antoni Taies has been associated with a number movements such as Art Informel and Matter Painting. He became a part of the avant-garde group Dau al Set in 1948 which was a group that had strong ties to Surrealism. Early works of his were surrealistic, but in 1953 he began working in abstract art. It is here that he becomes a part of the Art Informel movement and starts working with mixed media. Art Informel in Europe was the equivalent to Abstract Expressionism in America. This was among the most prevalent styles of art in post-war Europe. Within this movement is the category of Matter Painting. Its focus on the use of odd objects completely undermines the acts of traditional fine art. Some of Tapies's most famous and original works fall within this genre. They are characterized by his use of marble dust and clay that he mixed with his paints as well as the incorporation of found objects such as string, paper, and cloth.
