U.S. Model 1911 Semi-Auto Pistol by Colt

Lot # 1131 (Sale Order: 132 of 805)

serial #ATF63500.126, 45 ACP, 5'' Colt barrel with an oxidized and pitted bore. At some point the serial number and markings showing U.S. ownership were removed and a new serial number assigned by the A.T.F. but the factory slide markings and Major Walter G. Penfield's inspection mark remain strong to crisp. The metal surfaces were non-factory re-blued with about 99% remaining showing a few light assembly and handling marks plus old pitting under the new finish. The grips are post WWII checkered synthetic government replacement grips with large reinforcing ring and ribbed back. A number of features indicate that this gun was probably manufactured in 1913 and falls between serial number 25,000 and 62,000 but some parts could have been changed during the refurbish which could skew this. The ''H'' of Francis L. Hosmer on the barrel hood and frame are a matching non-serif font of that time period and the barrel has the ''H'' and ''P'' on the chamber. All the parts are correct for that period of manufacture with several notable features such as ''U'' notch round-top rear sight, long sharp legs on the recoil spring guide and square detent hole in the recoil spring plug. No magazine is provided. One can only speculate if this gun was originally ''liberated'' by some G.I. or someone else and it would make an interesting 1911 collectible. (88873-291) {C&R}
