(N) DESIRABLE AND ATTRACTIVE GERMAN MP-38 / MP-40 MACHINE GUN ON INLAND ARMS COMPANY MANUFACTURED RE

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 2 of 596)

Very attractive combination of MP-38 and MP-40 parts on an Inland Arms Company MP-38 registered receiver. One can immediately spot the milled lightening “ribs” in the heavy steel receiver and flat magazine housing. Other features the discerning observer will pick up on will be the barrel is MP-38 with a muzzle cover ridge forward of the front sight and early magazine release button, and also will note the trigger guard has no reinforcement ridge. The rest of the gun is made up of MP-40 parts such as the bolt with sliding locking handle. Lower assembly is marked MP-40 and “bnz” (Steyr) and was manufactured in 1942. Serial numbers do not match on parts. No discernible serial number on barrel. Included with this lot is an original, albeit unmarked, leather sling with correct stitching, and seven original Nazi marked magazines and one Nazi marked magazine loader in a pair of tan magazine pouches. The pouches are a useful way to keep the magazines and loader together as the guns is transported to and from the range. The receiver tube is marked by the manufacturer on the underside and with serial number on left side forward of the magazine housing. At first glance the casual observer’s heart rate will quicken when they observe this gun, as the workmanship is that good! The MP-38 (machine pistol 1938 model) was submitted to meet the needs of the German military for a compact burst-fire weapons which originally was primarily to be used by dismounted armor and otherwise vehicle mounted troops. It evolved into the MP-40 which was far less time consuming to produce because the latter utilized more metal stampings, including the receiver. The MP-38 model, when found today, is one of the most sought and prized of the German World War II machine pistol models, and this cataloger can envision the collector who has the appropriate parts might want to acquire this specimen and complete a fine (all original except the tube) attention grabber. This would also make a great entry level machine gun for the recreational shooting enthusiast. Relatively slow firing, easy to control, comfortable, and utilizing readily available ammunition. This is a full-auto only machine gun eligible to be transferred into State of Connecticut. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine as refinished upon assembly. There are some light handling marks and dings to the furnishings. Bore is very clean, shiny and bright. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. A very attractive specimen indeed. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4. Accessories: two mag pouches, 7 Magazines Barrel Length: 10" Caliber/Bore: 9mm FFL Status: NFA Manufacturer: Inland / Steyr-Daimer-Puch Model: MP-38 Serial Number: 3831Condition: Dimensions:

(N) HIGHLY DESIRABLE GERMAN MP-44 MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 4 of 596)

Very attractive "fxo" (C.G. Haenel) MP44 manufactured in 1944 with clear "WaA 37" proofs on receiver forward of the magazine housing. Sheet metal stamped receiver manufactured by “cos” (Mertzwerke), which was a sub-contracter who supplied parts for many German weapons. “cos” also visible in sling recess of buttstock. Operating piston matches receiver number. Refinished bolt has non-matching electro-pencil number on underside. Numbers do not match between receiver and buttstock assembly which is numbered 7788 on bottom of wood, and “788” on buttstock socket. Bottom of receiver has added “MP 44 8 MM / H R GUNS” added markings professionally stamped in. Includes one original “fxo” 30 round magazine. The MP44 was the first true modern “assault rifle” chambered for a shorter than standard rifle cartridge (33 mm vs 57 mm) which although less powerful than the standard 8mm German rifle round was still very effective at medium ranges where most combat took place. This allowed the individual soldier to carry plenty of ammunition in 30 round magazine so that the rifle could be effective in close quarters combat as well. Capable of both semi-automatic and fully-automatic fire with the pressing of a switch at the side of the the receiver this first modern "assault rifle" could fill the role of a deliberate "aimed-fire" weapon, as well as that of a "suppressing fire" weapon. This rifle was constructed of metal stampings to the maximum extent possible to save production time and cost. CONDITION: Overall Appearance and finish is extremely fine as refinished on both receiver and on wood. Gas tube, operating piston, and magazine do not appear to have been refinished. Original wood grips are extremely fine. Bore is very clean, shiny and bright. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. A very attractive looking specimen of an extremely popular and collectible machine gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE GERMAN MP-44 MACHINE GUN WITH STG 44 MARKED MAGAZINE (CURIO & RELIC).

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 10 of 596)

Very attractive "bnz" (Steyr) MP44 manufactured in 1944 with clear "WaA 623" proofs on receiver forward of the magazine housing. Visible numbers appear all matching including bolt upon field stripping. Charging handle/operating piston appears to be an unnumbered waffenmeister replacement. Beautiful wooden buttstock with clear "ayf" (ERMA) manufacturers code on left side on sling recess. "824 c" on hardware of buttstock assembly also appears to be a vintage waffenmeister renumber. Accessories include an original albeit unmarked leather sling with correct stitching and seven original Nazi marked magazines in a pair of unmarked tan magazine pouches. Six of the magazines are "MP44" marked but the 7th is a real prize, marked "St.G,44". The MP44 was an developed to be an "all-purpose" weapon chambered for an intermediate cartridge falling between the full-power 8mm rifle cartridge, and the 9mm pistol cartridge. Capable of both semi-automatic and fully-automatic fire with the pressing of a switch at the side of the the receiver this first modern "assault rifle" could fill the role of a deliberate "aimed-fire" weapon, as well as that of a "suppressing fire" weapon which was much needed by the Germans on the Eastern front against the Russians. Much has been written about the development of this model, but the concept was to manufacture this rifle utilizing metal stampings to the maximum extent to save production time. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine, dull, very likely vintage period non-buffed refinish with parts such as the barrel handguard and barrel starting to turn a brown patina and some wear to gray patina at the high edges in places. Wood of butt has a semi-gloss appearance over unsanded wood with absolutely stellar "ayf" manufacturer's mark and some light handling marks. Grips are extremely fine to near excellent. Bore is very clean, shiny and bright. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. A very attractive specimen with the appearance of a "dipped" refinish. There is evidence of a punch pin removal on both sides of the magazine housing above the magazine catch. This is a very attractive MP-44 with a highly desirable magazine. Ammunition became available in recent years and anyone who shoots one of these guns will attest to their excellent firing characteristics. There is a reason these are such popular collector's items. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) RARE AND HIGHLY SOUGHT GERMAN BERGMANN MP35/I MACHINE GUN (CURIO & RELIC).

Lot # 1011 (Sale Order: 11 of 596)

Manufactured by Bergmann from the mid-1930's until 1942, the MP35/I incorporated an interesting and advanced feature of an easily removable barrel for cleaning and maintenance. Pressing the detent button with the head of a cartridge on the underside of the forearm forward of the trigger guard allows the user to rotate the muzzle and barrel assembly forward of the rear sight 90 degrees and then remove it; an extremely nice feature. Another interesting feature of this weapon is that it fires semi-auto with single pulls of the trigger and if automatic fire is desired, one need only pull the trigger to the rear and hold it. Receiver serial number is the only visible external serial number. Safety is on the left side of the receiver below the rear sight, which is graduated out to 1,000 meters. The tab to the rear of the safety is a bolt retention latch, which one need only to depress in order to remove the bolt for cleaning. This is an earlier production specimen with a one piece walnut stock. Top of receiver markings indicate it was issued to railway police as the seventh weapon for a particular precinct. The model was supplied primarily to security forces and SS formations. For those who are familiar with them, they are a highly prized example of German milled steel submachine gun manufacturing. This weapon includes four original 32 round magazines. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent. Original lustrous blue finish is starting to fade in places with typical light handling marks, bruises and dings on wood stock from use. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt face is also extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a select fire machine gun. An exciting offering for the collector of high quality World War II era German machine guns as well as for the discerning shooting enthusiast/collector/investor. From the estate of noted cartridge collector and World War II veteran William H. Woodin. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. (N) FLUTED WATER JACKET WORLD WAR I BRITISH VICKERS MODEL 1915 MACHINE GUN REGISTERED BY FAKTS (FULL

Lot # 1014 (Sale Order: 14 of 596)

The Vickers water cooled machine gun was the immediate evolutionary progression from the venerable Maxim machine gun. By relocating the trigger mechanism to the top of the action, the overall height of the receiver box could be shortened and the gun consequently lightened. From the perspective of the modern day collector/shooting enthusiast the Vickers is more readily and easily converted to different calibers according to the desires of the owner. This attractive Vickers is marked on water jacket “7.92/303” and is registered as fully transferable by FAKTS out of Houston, TX. This gun is currently set-up to shoot the popular 8mm Mauser, but could be readily converted to shoot .303 British or even .30-06 if one had the correct parts. Parts remain available to convert the Vickers to shoot the popular 7.62 Russian cartridge as well. Details about this particular example are that it has a brass screw on drain cap, unarmored muzzle, feed shuttle numbered 10792 with evidence of conversion to 8mm. Bolt is numbered 877T and is indeed 8mm. Various parts are marked “MA” indicating Australian manufacture and others such as water jacket being marked “ET” (Erithworks) and having British crown proof marks. This gun is extremely professionally assembled. Mechanism moves smoothly when operated by hand. PROVENANCE: The class III weapons formerly on loan to Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine as refinished. Metal surfaces retain over 90% of their blue finish with an area of brown patina just forward of rear sight. Backplate handles are a hard bakelite plastic material while metal surfaces of backplate have enamel paint mostly flaking off revealing a gray/brown patina. Water jacket retains over 95% gray/green repainted finish. Muzzle booster shows some slight pitting, green verdigris and some slight oxidation. Bore has strong bright lands, but dark in grooves. Bolt face is near excellent. Mechanics are fine. Tripod serial numbered 389 and marked with brass plate “VICKERS MACH. GUN/TRIPOD/MARK IV/MGF. BY COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.”. Tripod only has about 10% of its original paint; bare metal surfaces have turned brown with corrosion and fairly heavy scale; brass pedestal and head still retain 80% of their green paint. Front and rear retaining pins present. Traverse elevation mechanism works fine. This tripod appears fully functional. A very fine Vickers gun for the discerning enthusiast who is looking for a lock with the difficult to find extractor for the 8mm / .30-06 cartridge. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 or 4. (N) EXTREMELY RARE AND HIGHLY SOUGHT SOVIET RUSSIAN SIMONOV AVS-36 MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC)

Lot # 1019 (Sale Order: 19 of 596)

Manufactured by Izhevsk in 1939 and so marked and dated, this rifle was Russia's version of the American 1918 Browning automatic rifle. With a box magazine and full power rifle round it had an advantage over the BAR in that it fires from a closed bolt, with a large muzzle brake. Expensive and time consuming to produce, it was fielded in limited numbers before Soviet authorities decided they would concentrate more on the semi-auto only SVT-38s and later SVT-40s. Receiver and buttstock serial number match. Bolt and magazine serial numbers do not match receiver serial number. No import marks (of course) on this curio and relic eligible machine gun, indicating it was likely a bring-back by some G.I. who likely liberated it from a German. This cataloger has spoken to several veterans in past years who captured Russian equipment from German soldiers on the Western Front. The AVS-36 incorporates an adjustable gas port above the barrel forward of the hand guard and a cleaning rod on the right side which attaches to the rifle making it immediately recognizable relative to its cousins, the SVT series. Two original non-matching SN 15 round magazines are included with this lot. One is “SA” marked indicating Finnish capture. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish are fine. Original blue finish thinning to a grey patina in a classic use wear pattern. Stock has typical scratches, gouges and handling marks, but is completely whole and serviceable with clear and attractive Soviet cartouche on right side. Charging handle dust cover slides with proper tension. Selector is crisp and positive. Bore is dark with strong rifling; shiny on lands and dark in grooves. Bolt face is very good. This is a select fire machine gun. Quite an attractive, very rare and desirable specimen for the World War II or Soviet machine gun collector/investor. A great piece. From the estate of noted cartridge collector and World War II veteran William H. Woodin. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) EXTREMELY SCARCE AND ATTRACTIVE WORLD WAR I ERA BRASS JACKET IMPERIAL RUSSIAN MAXIM AS CAPTURED

Lot # 1023 (Sale Order: 23 of 596)

This exceedingly rare and desirable Russian Model 1910 Maxim is documented in Dolf Goldsmith’s book "The Devil’s Paintbrush." Many Russian Maxim Guns were captured by the Germans during World War I and subsequently converted to fire Germany's own 8mm Mauser cartridge. They are immediately recognizable by a large "S" riveted to the top cover. The Russians had both the older brass as well as steel smooth jacket Maxim's during World War I, but the brass jacket gun was and is by far more scarce. On this specimen the steel fusee cover bears the Imperial Russian double headed eagle and Cyrillic markings including serial number and stated 1915 year of manufacture. Bottom plate, trunnion, and nose cap are all of steel construction. Water jacket also bears Imperial Russian eagle symbol water jacket. Brass water filler cap missing its extended hard rubber thumb piece but otherwise serviceable. Water drain cap is a steel replacement with red hard rubber thumb piece remaining. Cork, chain, and attachment hardware for chain to jacket not present. Serial numbers match on sideplates, fusee cover, top cover and backplate as well as trunnion trigger bar and cross bolt. Bolt is numbered 7008. Optical sight bracket present on left side receiver plate. Top cover has large steel “S” riveted on indicating conversion to 8mm Mauser by Germans after capture. Muzzle booster assembly is of German MG08 type. Barrel is marked “S” / SN “8859” / Nazi eagle proof mark. Oil brush caps are numbered 42 and 22 respectively and oil brushes are intact and serviceable. Early and highly desirable original brass base Sokolov mount, serial number 4541, has extendable legs attached to undercarriage and steel wheel at rear base of carriage. Reproduction armor shield present. Mounting pin retention chain is a latter day replacement. Underside of gun trunnion is engraved “JPL T AZ85653”, which indicates that at one time this arm was in the possession of a close friend of Dolf Goldsmith's who was a noted firearms enthusiast in Arizona. This specimen was also owned for many years by H. P. White Laboratories, as stated in Goldsmith’s book “The Devil’s Paintbrush” on Page 225. Mechanics are fine. PROVENANCE: Ex-Dolf Goldsmith collection; The class III weapons formerly on loan to Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent, near 100% refinish on steel parts with area around engraving on fusee cover turning a brown patina. Charging handle blue has worn thin and turned a slight patina on ball where it is grasped to actuate. Brass water jacket shows evidence of polishing and retains much of that shine together with a mottling of brown spots and some nicks. Muzzle is in very clean condition. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright with some wear to lands. Lock face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a full-auto only machine gun. Mount retains about 30% of its green painted finish otherwise mostly a dark brown patina on steel of carriage and rims of wheels, which are worn bright at edges. Turn table assembly also an even light brown patina. Brass base unpainted and quite attractive. Armor shield retains 95% green repainted finish with red oxide primer showing through scratches and wear to edges. This Maxim is the "Holy Grail" for the World War I Maxim collector whether they be interested in Russian or German military history. This gun may well be the only specimen of its kind on its original side-plate and registered fully transferable and Curio & Relic eligible in the United States. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) FANTASTIC JULY 1918 ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION WORLD WAR I MARLIN ROCKWELL BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLE

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 25 of 596)

Absolutely fabulous original World War I original configuration Marlin Rockwell manufactured BAR model 1918 including correct World War I era style flash hider as well as outstanding checkered wooden forend. Barrel marked “M” (for Marlin) with “7-18” date and ordnance bomb proof marks. One original vintage 20 round magazine with “M” proof on floorplate also included with this lot. Gun retains its semi-auto operational feature as originally fielded for World War I. When selector is in the forward position the rifle fires semi-automatic only and in the middle position fully-automatic. The Browning automatic rifle was designed to provide “walking fire” while on the advance. This concept meant to maximize the attack firepower and allow for both automatic suppressive fire on an objective as well as aimed semi-automatic fire from the shoulder. The BAR is a favorite at any shooting event, and this beautiful specimen is certain to draw significant interest. High quality manufacture, beautiful finish and furnishings, and tremendous fun to shoot. This is the BAR that many collectors have been waiting for. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent professional faithful refinish over a couple handling marks visible only upon close examination with some subsequent very little brown patina. Magazine also has lustrous blue finish with some loss of finish to a grey patina in places. Forend is in fabulous condition with perhaps the slightest of handling marks. Buttstock exhibits a slight 2-3/4" crack on left running parallel to the bore line 1/4" from top of the receiver towards the butt. This does not affect serviceability and a good wood repairman could deal with this. Otherwise the buttstock exhibits light but typical handling marks and dings. Bore is near excellent shiny and bright. Mechanics are crisp. This is the among the most attractive BAR's this cataloger has ever seen come to auction. Combination of model, configuration, vintage, appearance, and quality of bore and internals in a gun that is in a condition to be fired as much as one would like without diminishing the value.
