Abercrombie & Fitch Engraved Winchester Model 1973 Rifle

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 938)

Attractive Abercrombie & Fitch Commissioned Relief Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

This is one of only approximately 30 Model 1873s embellished and plated in full gold specifically for Abercrombie & Fitch Co. that appeared in 1969/70. This very limited edition rifle was built using an original Winchester 1873 and decorated in a style normally found only on the Model 1866. It was easier to sculpt scenes in brass than in steel; because of this very few were done on the Model 1873. The majority of the calibers were .44-40 and .38-40 with some, like this example, chambered in .32-20 caliber. As identified in the factory letter, this rifle was originally received in the warehouse on September 10, 1894, and shipped on November 1 with an octagon barrel in .32 caliber and plain trigger. The modern A&F embellishment consists of beautiful floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and five stunning relief engraved game and coin circular vignettes on the receiver which include "seated Liberty," grizzly bear, and side profile bust of a Native American. A blank inscription oval appears on the right side plate amongst the scrollwork. Purportedly, the rifle was engraved by Del Zornada.

Class: Antique

Very fine as extensively professionally embellished for Abercrombie & Fitch Co. The rifle retains 50% of the gold plating with exposed nickel under plating on the balance. The wood is also fine with a hairline stress crack at the buttplate tang and some minor dings and scratches. The magazine spring and follower are absent. The action is excellent.

Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Rifle, Swiss Buttplate, Letter

Lot # 3004 (Sale Order: 5 of 938)

Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Swiss Buttplate and Buffalo Bill Historical Center Letter

The accompanying Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter lists this rifle with a 28 inch octagon barrel in .38-56 caliber, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Swiss buttplate and Lyman front and rear sights when received in the warehouse on June 24, 1890 and shipped the same day. The barrel has a dovetail beaded blade front sight, filler block in the rear sight slot, two-line address marking and "38-56 WCF" at the breech. There is also a Lyman tang sight. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and serial number. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured and checkered walnut. The rare special order stock has a raised cheekpiece, ebony grip insert and nickel plated Swiss buttplate. According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "The cheekpiece stock…was produced in very limited numbers on any models." The left side of the lower tang is marked "330 XXX." "330" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate. The combination of deluxe/special order features makes this Model 1886 a rare example.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel, magazine and bolt retain 50% thinned original blue finish. The buttplate retains 30% original nickel plating. The remaining surfaces retain 40% plus original case colors. The wood is fine with a few long scratches, otherwise some minor handling evidence and crisp checkering overall. The action needs work as the hammer does not hold at the half and full cock positions.

Scarce U.S. Contract Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 6 of 938)

Martially Inspected U.S. Contract Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Offered here is an example of one of the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in December 1863 from the New Haven Arms Company. These rifles were issued to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment (1st D.C. Cavalry). The 1st D.C. Cavalry was utilized for provost duty in the District of Columbia under the direct control of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In early 1864 the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to combat Confederate partisan rangers led by Col. John S. Mosby operating in northern Virginia. The 800 Henry rifles in the 1st D.C. Cavalry contract are in the 3000-4000 serial number range. These are the only Henry rifles marked with Ordnance inspection marks. The second style receiver introduced around serial number 3000 lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry rifles manufactured in 1862 and 1863. The first pattern crescent buttplate, used until about serial number 5100, has a rounded heel. The barrel has a blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 and the two-line Henry's patent/address ahead of the rear sight. The "C.G.C." initials of Ordnance Inspector Charles G. Chapman are stamped on the right barrel flat at the junction with the receiver. The left side of the stock and barrel are correctly not fitted with a sling swivel and sling loop which were special order features not included on most U.S. contract Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged trapdoor (cleaning rod not included). A single "H" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the side of the barrel below the "C.G.C." mark. "HH" is stamped on the right side of the receiver adjacent to the barrel marks. A small "C" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right heel of the buttplate. The matching serial number is stamped on the top barrel flat, left side of the lower tang, buttplate and one buttplate screw. Number in the stock inlet is illegible. The U.S. contract Henry rifles issued to the 1st D.C. Cavalry saw hard service when the regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac during the Petersburg Campaign in the summer of 1864. Several hundred of these rifles were captured during engagements with Confederate cavalry. The bodyguard of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was armed with captured Henry rifles when he fled Richmond during the closing days of the war. Although most of the Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., during the Civil War are believed to have been purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the firepower offered by the advanced Henry rifle; the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department on December 31, 1863, were the only Henry rifles with Ordnance inspection marks issued during the Civil War. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was the only unit in the Federal army armed entirely with government issued Henry rifles during the Civil War.

Class: Antique

Good. The barrel and magazine have a crisp smooth dark patina overall. The evenly worn brass has a very attractive untouched mellow yellow appearance. The sanded and revarnished stock is also good with a repair visible in the wrist (right side), couple hairline stress cracks and some minor handling/storage marks. There is a faint outline of a cartouche on the right side of the stock. Mechanically fine. A desirable U.S. contract New Haven Arms Co. rifle that is missing from most Civil War or lever action collections. A must have for the serious collector.

Special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1875. This rifle has the First Model receiver with grooved dust cover guides and dust cover with checkered oval finger grip. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1873 as: "Rifle, 28-inch Octagon barrel, Set trigger, Checkered stock with xxx wood" and "Nickel Receiver". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 3, 1875. The rifle has a blued barrel, full length magazine and trigger with fire blue loading gate and casehardened forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The receiver, dust cover and cartridge elevator are nickel-plated. The stock and forearm are highly figured, deluxe, 3x, fancy grain walnut with a satin finish and early 16-18 line Winchester factory checkering. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XXX 741." The assembly number "741" is repeated on the buttplate and stock inlet. The special order, 28-inch octagon barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn rear sight with fixed sighting notch and four notch elevator marked "1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2" and "3" on the left side. The rifle has a single set-trigger. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL. 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number is stamped in script numerals between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. There are, correctly, no caliber markings on the barrel or cartridge elevator.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 60% of the original blue finish with light edge wear and small scattered spots of age discoloration. The Winchester legend is crisp. The case colors on the forearm cap, hammer and lever have faded to a mottled gray-brown with 40% of the original finish remaining. The buttplate has a dark brown patina with scattered age discoloration. The receiver, dust cover and cartridge elevator retain 70% of the nickel-plated finish with light-moderate handling wear on contact points. The loading gate retains about 50% of the fire blue finish. The 3x, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are all in fine condition. The satin finish has a dark age patina with scattered minor handling marks. The checkered panels have light-moderate handling wear and remain in very good overall condition. This is a very good example of a desirable, early production First Model 1873 Winchester rifle with extremely rare nickel-plated receiver and other special order features.

Stunning, Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Platinum Barrel Bands and Factory Letter

This Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle comes with two Cody Firearm Museum Letters (2007 & 2008). The Cody Museum letters describe this rifle as: "Rifle, 45/70 caliber, Barrel Shape: Octagon, Plain trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip, Shotgun butt rubber" and "Engraved $5.00 Barrel inlaid & etc. $2.00 Blued" (no mention of sling swivels). The letters states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 7, 1893. The rifle has a full-octagon 26-inch barrel with standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and sporting style folding leaf rear sight graduated to "10" and marked "1886" on the top of the leaf with a single silver band at breech and muzzle. The stock and forearm cap are fitted with factory sling swivels. The pistol grip stock has a special order black, hard rubber, checkered shotgun style buttplate embossed with the logo "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." in a relief circle. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. USA-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "45/70" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver in a panel formed by scallop and punch-dot engraving. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886.-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the rear tang screws surrounded by an engraved banner. The barrel and full length magazine have a blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver and bolt have the special order high polish blue finish. The loading gate is fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a high polish piano finish. The forearm and pistol grip have Winchester factory "Style H" checkering and the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. Delicate scrollwork is engraved on the barrel top and flats from the receiver nearly to the rear sight and from the muzzle past the rear sight on the top flat and to the edges of the sight on the sides of the barrel. The forearm cap is engraved with delicate scroll and border work. The top, sides and bottom of the receiver are decorated with Winchester No. 9 engraving as illustrated on pages 20-21 of the October 1897 edition of "Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Highly Finished Arms" reproduced on page 229 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The engraving features a vignette of a grazing deer on the right side of the receiver ahead of the loading gate and a larger vignette of a bull elk in a mountain scene on the left side of the receiver. Both vignettes feature extremely fine detail. The game scenes on the sides of the receiver are surrounded by precisely executed line, scallop, zig-zag and punch-dot borders complemented by delicate scrollwork. Fine scrollwork decorates the top of the receiver at the breech and the bottom of the receiver at the junction with the forearm and at the lever. The engraving is delicate, precisely executed and elegantly understated. The engraving was almost certainly executed by Winchester Master Engraver John Ulrich. Note: This rifle's consecutively serialized mate, number 78316, is pictured in R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" and has a no. 4 engraving and H style stock checkering. This suggests that this rifle was part of a series of Model 1886s that were highly embellished at the factory.

Class: Antique

Excellent overall. The barrel and magazine have 97% plus of the original blue finish with traces of thinning at the muzzle and front edge of the magazine. The Winchester legend, caliber designation and scrollwork engraving are extremely sharp. The forearm cap retains almost all of the blue finish with some traces of age spotting under the sling swivel. The receiver has nearly 98% of the special order blue finish with some thinning on the upper and lower receiver tangs and some scattered and very light age spotting on the bottom between the end of the lever and the forearm. There is a small scuff mark on the right side of the receiver behind the loading gate and several nearly invisible scratches on the left side of the receiver. The engraving and delicate game vignettes are extremely sharp. The bolt retains 98% of the high polish blue finish. At least 95% of the fire blue finish is present on the loading gate. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 98% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm have at least 98% of the high polish piano finish. The stock and forearm have very insignificant, scattered, handling and storage marks but remain in excellent plus conditio

This extremely rare and desirable Winchester First Model 1866 "Flatside" rifle was manufactured circa 1866. This rifle has the First Model receiver which lacks the flare at the junction with the forearm found on later production Model 1866 rifles. In addition to the "Flatside" receiver, other early production features on this rifle include: (1) rapid drop in the receiver profile at the hammer ("Henry Drop"), (2) un-capped, chamfered, forearm retained by a single screw, (3) two-screw upper tang, (4) screw-fastened magazine retaining band, (5) Henry style stock with straight comb and (6) early, carbine style, rear sight with 100, 300 and 500 yard markings. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The brass crescent buttplate has the same profile and butt trap door as late production Henry rifles. The butt trap contains the four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip provided with Model 1866 rifles. The stock and forearm are deluxe, burl grain, piano finished, walnut. The barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The bolt and loading gate are blued and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The receiver and buttplate have the natural brass finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866" ahead of the rear sight. All of the visible serial numbers match. A tiny assembly number: "1601" is stamped on the lower left side of the tang ahead of the serial number. This particular rifle is illustrated and described on page 58 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle is all original. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine remains 40% intact with the balance having faded to a smooth, blue-gray, patina. The barrel edges and legend are crisp. Traces of nitre blue are present on the loading gate cover. The hammer, trigger, and lever have 50% of the casehardened finish. The brass flatside receiver and crescent buttplate are in very fine condition with a handsome, untouched attractively aged patina. The receiver has perfect side plate joints and is free from scratches or handling marks. The buttplate has some very minor wear on the edges of the heel and toe but remains in the same overall condition as the receiver. The deluxe, burl walnut, stock and forearm remain in very fine condition with at 85% of the high polish piano finish. The forearm has a small chip on the upper right side at the junction with the receiver, a repaired hairline crack on the right side running from the tip of the forearm through the retaining screw and several shallow scratches and handling marks. The sides of the casehardened hammer and loading lever are decorated with scroll work. The upper tang is roll-stamped with the designation, "MODEL 1873" with foliate decoration at either end. The lower tang is signed by the engraver "J. ULRICH" in tiny letters behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The heel of the crescent, gold-plated buttplate is decorated with scroll-work and engraved borders. The gold-plated forend cap is also decorated with scrollwork and engraved borders. The stock and forearm are fancy grade, highly figured walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The pearl initials "H.L." are inlaid on the right side of the stock. The checkered stock has bone or ebony inlays on the tip of the comb and the edge of the pistol grip. This rifle is a magnificent example of the best and most elaborate engraving, special finishes and special order features available on Model 1873 Winchester rifles.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 75% of the original gold-plated finish on the receiver, dust cover, forend cap and buttplate. The engraved game scenes, scrollwork and borders are crisp. Strong traces of case colors are present on the sides of the hammer and lever. The loading gate has 50% of the spotted niter blue finish. The barrel and magazine have a deep brown patina. The barrel, rear sight and about half of the magazine are covered with shallow pitting. There is light pitting on the sides and bottom of the lever, and the right side of the hammer has patches of light pitting. This rifle was originally sold by RIAC in December 2011, lot 1287. Subsequently, the owner has partially restored the finish on both frame and barrel for preservation purposes. Note both frame and barrel exhibit original finishes mixed with professional touch up. The stock and forearm are in fine condition. The stock retains much of the original high polish varnish with dark staining visible on forward comb. The checkering on the pistol grip is fine; wear is limited to minor handling marks. The varnished finish and checkered panel on the forearm show light-moderate handling wear but remain in very fine overall condition. This is one of the most highly decorated Model 1873 Winchester Rifles extant and is a magnificent example of 19th century Winchester craftsmanship and the skill of Master Engraver John Ulrich. Writer has never seen another Model 1873 quite like this and will have to say that it ranks as one of my personal favorites!

The receiver features an engraved floral scroll motif on a punch dot background and line borders. The left side plate is engraved with a stag scene inside a circular panel. "44 CAL" appears on the cartridge elevator, the model marking is on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the lower tang. Very good. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% of the period replated nickel with light flaking on the balance. The remaining surfaces retain traces of nickel in the protected areas with the balance a bright appearance mixed with some light pitting. The engraving is crisp. The reoiled wood is very good with a hairline stress crack near the forend cap and a deep divot on the buttstock, otherwise some minor handling/storage marks. Mechanically excellent. Winchester First Model 1866 Flat Side Rifle

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 938)

Extremely Rare Winchester First Model 1866 "Flat Side" Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1866. This is a rare first model with the brass receiver lacking the flare at the junction with the forearm, having the same drop in front of the hammer as the Henry rifle and having two upper tang screws. First models are seen up through the 15000 serial number range. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The matching serial number ("13821") is marked on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet and buttplate. The barrel has the first style, two-line Henry address/King patent dates legend, a dovetail blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The hammer correctly lacks a half cock feature, and the bolt retains the original rimfire firing pin. The forearm and straight grip stock are nicely figured walnut. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor brass buttplate (cleaning rod absent). According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, the total number of First Model 1866s manufactured was approximately 3,500 guns equally divided between rifles and carbines. He further estimated that the survival rate for these early Winchesters was approximately 25% and that "less than 875" First Model 1866 rifles and carbines were available to collectors. The majority of these are carbines.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine tube have cold blue touch up mixed with a smooth dark brown patina overall. The brass has an aged appearance with some freckling of darker patina. The forend cap is absent. The forearm is cracked and repaired, otherwise the wood is fine with numerous dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. It is not often that we catalog Winchester Model 1866 flat side rifles. No Winchester lever action collection can be considered complete without a very rare Winchester First Model 1866 flat side rifle.

Factory Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1892 Rifle, Letter

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 938)

Rare Documented Special Order Factory Full Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Offered here is a rare factory nickel plated Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1898 in exceptional condition. This is without question the highest condition factory full nickel plated Model 1892 we have cataloged! The accompanying factory letter addressed to Mr. Felix A. Bedlan is dated September 4, 1984 and lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .32 caliber, set trigger, flat-top sporting rear, Lyman front combination and Lyman rear cup disc sights, screw eyes and full nickel when it was received in the warehouse on March 26, 1903, and shipped the next day. In a second included letter on famed North Carolina gun dealer Cherry's letterhead, Cherry's vice president and firearms author Gurney Brown references Winchester expert and author George Madis' research that found 1 out of 825 Model 1892s shipped had special order factory plating (silver, gold, or nickel). This would mean that no more than 1,217 Model 1892s had plating of some kind out of 1,004,675 that were manufactured in total. As Madis proclaims, "Needless to say here, not many specially finished arms were ordered and they are rare today" ("The Winchester Book," page 385). The barrel has a Beach combination front sight, pointed filler block in the rear sight dovetail, two-line address/patent date marking and "32 WCF" marking. The receiver is equipped with double set triggers and has a tang peep sight. As stated in the factory letter, sling eyelets are present. Mounted on nicely figured smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock. Writer believes this rifle was most likely for factory exhibition purposes.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retaining 97% plus of the original factory nickel plating with light flaking mixed with a few patches turned to a dark patina on the balance. The wood is also excellent showing minor handling/storage evidence and retaining most of the varnish with a textured area on the left side of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional example of a rare special order nickel plated Model 1892 rifle worthy of the most advanced Winchester collections.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine have 95% original blue finish intact. There is some slight finish loss on the magazine band. The Winchester legend and caliber designation are crisp. Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Fancy Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3022 (Sale Order: 23 of 938)

Scarce Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Fancy Lever Action Rifle

The letter describes the features as: "Rifle, 30 caliber" and "Fancy checkered stock". The letter further states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on April 3, 1903 and returned to the warehouse for repair in August 1905 and September 1906. The rifle has the 28-inch round barrel that was standard for caliber .30 Army rifles. This barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber designation "30 U.S." on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver; this designation and the fact that the rifle was manufactured in 1905 indicates it is chambered for the desirable .30-03 cartridge. The barrel has a braised, ramp front sight base with brass sight blade and a standard, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center insert. A Lyman adjustable receiver sight with extended locking lever is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines just behind the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the second style Winchester legend with the "JAN. 25.98" two-line legend. The side of the rear sight is marked: "LYMAN". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number is stamped across the bottom of the lower tang between the tang screws. The barrel, receiver, rear sight and lever have a blue finish. The bolt and trigger have a high polish blue finish. The hammer and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The forearm tip has an ebony insert. The Winchester Model 1895 receiver was designed to handle high power cartridges, and the distinctive box magazine allowed the use of modern pointed bullets. Model 1895 rifles chambered for the .30-03 cartridge (30 Army) are particularly desirable. Model 1895 rifles with deluxe, fancy grade checkered stocks and forearms are scarce.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. This rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish. The barrel has 90% plus of the blue finish with the exception of a two-inch area on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight where the blue has thinned slightly. The finish on the top and upper right side of the receiver show handling wear, and there are some scattered patches of flaking on the sides and top of the lever. The bolt and trigger retain nearly all of the high polish blue. The hammer has nearly all of the muted case colors. The crescent buttplate shows typical handling wear and has a silver-gray patina with some rust and age discoloration on the heel and toe. The barrel and receiver markings are extremely sharp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very fine-excellent condition. There is some finish loss and what appears to be an old repair on the right stock wrist between the checkered panel and the edge of the receiver. The balance of the stock and forearm retain nearly all of the original piano finish. The checkered panels show minimal handling wear. This is a very fine example of a scarce Winchester Model 1895 Fancy Sporting Rifle chambered for the desirable .30-03 cartridge.
