Condition: Fine. 97% blue and case-hardening. Cylinder needs cleaning, and has light patina at breech. Scattered nicks and handling marks. Light tarnish to brass gripstraps.
Notes: Kept by the factory as sample of blackpowder model of the squareback 1851 Navy production. Revolver may also have served as a test piece, considering lack of finish on the gripstraps, grips and cylinder.

**Rare Colt Experimental Prototype Double Action Revolver of the Python Model, with Factory Letter

Condition: Fine. Handling and test wear. 99% blue. Grips with scattered nicks, bruises, chipping.
Notes: An experimental prototype of one of the factory's most coveted models, the Python. See R.L. Wilson, The Book of Colt Firearms, pages 402-403. Serial numbering for the Python began in 1955, with number 1. Factory superintendent Al Gunther was involved in designing the new revolver. The non-ventilated rib barrel feature, with shrouded cylinder pin, is believed to have been one of the early designs, in this instance with 4 1/8-inch barrel. The blue is not the high gloss, Royal Blue, adopted as a production feature for the Python.
