HENRY EARLY LEVER ACTION REPEATING

RIFLE. Cal. 44 HRF. S# 1296. Bbl. 24 1/4" octagon w/ integral mag. tube & rotating shroud at muzzle for loading. Early style brass receiver gun w/ open sight dovetail on ...moretop of receiver. Rifle is serial numbered on top flat of bbl. forward of receiver, left inside of lower tang, top tang channel of stock, inside of buttplate peak & on side of tang screw. German silver blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Walnut stock w/ early style brass trapdoor buttplate having rounded profile at peak. The Henry rifle was patented in 1860 & commercial production began in 1862 when this rifle was likely mfg. The Henry gained fame during the Civil War where it was used by both sides & laid the foundation for the success of the Winchester rifle that became so important to the settlement of this country. CONDITION: bbl. & magazine finish have faded to gray/brown w/ spots of pitting. Brass receiver shows numerous nicks & scratches w/ heavy dent on top flat forward of ejection port. Brass is reacquiring a mild age tarnish after past cleanings & shows what appears to be evidence of an original plated finish. Sanded & refinished stock shows sm. scratches & handling marks. Cal. 44 HRF. S# 7621. The US Government purchased 1,731 Henry rifles during the Civil War. Rifles in the 7,000-9,000 S# range are found w/ Type II martial markings. The T...moreype II marking on this rifle is a sm. "JT" that is light but easily visible on the left side of the stock behind the receiver. Many of the Type II rifles were purchased near the end of the war accounting for the fact they are sometimes found in abnormally fine condition. Bbl. 24 1/4" oct. w/ integral mag. having rotating loading gate. Top flat has long style 3 9/32" bbl. marking "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT.". German silver blade front sight. Graduated 900 yd. leaf rear sight. Walnut stock has the Henry bump. Type II brass crescent trapdoor buttplate having pointed peak. Rear sling swivel on left side of stock, front sling loop is located on left side of bbl. & mag. tube. Matching S#s are found at rear of top bbl. flat, left side of lower inside receiver tang, top tang channel of stock & lower inside portion of buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scarce original 4 piece cleaning rod held in trapdoor butt. CONDITION: bbl. finish has faded to a pleasing mottled brown patina w/ scattered spots of darker surface oxidation. Brass has a wonderful aged mellow mustard patina w/ sm. areas of brighter finish appearing on the action & tangs. Stock has good finish showing scattered scratches & marks. Bore is exceptional. It is generally quite bright & retains sound rifling. There are tiny spots of light pitting primarily near the muzzle. HISTORIC DODGE CITY WINCHESTER 1866 RIFLE.

Cal. 44 HRF. S# 39000. Bbl. 24" Oct. Mfg. 1870. This rifle features foliate vine type engraving w/ punch dot background by Louis D. Nimschke. His "LDN" signature is found...more in vignette border around lever screw on left sideplate. Vignette on left sideplate features the head of an American bison. Right sideplate is inscribed "F.C. Zimmerman / Agent / DODGE CITY / KANSAS". Frederick Carl Zimmerman Dec. 29, 1833 to Jan 20, 1888 was born in Saxon Prussia & died in Dodge City, Kansas. Zimmerman learned the gunsmithing trade in Germany, Paris & London before arriving in the U.S. in 1863. He plied the gunsmithing trade in several Western locations beginning in 1868, settling in Dodge City Kansas in July 1872 where he operated his gunsmithing, hardware & lumber businesses & was considered to be a gentleman farmer. He was a leader among the German population & served as founding President of the German Immigration Society. "Standard History of Kansas & KANSANS" by William E. Connelley describes Zimmermann as "one of the stalwart, courageous & upright men of the real pioneer era in Southwestern Kansas". The rifle features a bone blade sporting front sight w/ graduated leaf rear sight. Uncheckered walnut stock & forearm fitted w/ sling swivels on brass cap & toeline. Forearm cap & brass crescent trapdoor buttplate have engraving that match the action. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: photo of Front St. in Dodge City featuring Zimmermann's store. 3 Pages of internet information about Zimmermann, his history & his obituary. Signed letter by Ivan B. Hart describing & authenticating the Nimschke engraving. CONDITION: receiver & other brass parts of the gun exhibit an attractive mellow aged patina appearance. Bbl., mag. tube & other iron parts have a dark mottled appearance showing spots of light pitting & surface corrosion. Stock & forearm are refinished showing heavy wear & weathering w/ cracks, chips & added wood repair extending around action & in the wrist area. Bottom of forearm shows heavy wear that may indicate extensive use on cross sticks or other rest. Bore shows scattered pitting & retains largely intact rifling. (01-16340/DS). Cal. 44 HRF. S# 22563. Bbl. 24" oct. Top flat marked "HENRY'S - PATENT - OCT. 16, 1860 / KING'S PATENT MARCH 29 1866". Sporting front sight w/ hand made fixed V notch rea...morer sight. Brass action, forearm tip & crescent buttplate. Walnut forearm & straight grip stock. Right side of butt has brass tacks w/ markings that resemble a backwards "J" & "M". Wendell Grangaard of South Dakota has unlocked the key to "togia", the pictographic language of the Cheyenne & Sioux Plains Indians. In his book "Documenting the Weapons used at the Little Big Horn", Mariah Press, 2015, Mr. Grangaard opens a window on Western History by translating the togia markings on historic Indian used weapons. The togia markings on this rifle, as translated by Mr. Grangaard, indicate the rifle was used by Many Kills, who rode w/ Chief Medicine Wolf at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Many Kills was a member of the Heyoka Military Society of the Cheyenne Lightning Society. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: folder of provenance titled "BATTLE of the LITTLE BIG HORN / A HISTORIC NATIONAL TREASURE" includes letters by Wendell Grangaard of Guns of History Inc. Photographs overlaid w/ diagrams of the togia markings show their meanings as translated by Mr. Grangaard. CONDITION: bbl. & mag. tube have faded to gray showing scattered light pitting. Mag. tube has darkened front portion that may indicate touch up finish. Brass parts show evidence of polishing & starting to reacquire a tarnish. Wood has age darkened appearance showing numerous scratches, dents & handling marks including the togia marks that are translated by Mr. Grangaard. Stock has crack extending from right side of receiver. Forearm has a full length added wood repair along the left bbl. channel. Bore is dark & pitted w/ worn rifling. (01-16346/DS). Rocky Mountain front sight & semi buckhorn rear sight. Full mag. w/ intact correct internals. Early Third Model rimfire receiver w/ unaltered takedown feature is masterfully engraved in flowing foliate scrollwork w/ sunflower terminus & architectural ribands, all w/ fine punch dot background, the hallmarks of the Ulrich engraving shop. Appended metal is adorned w/ similar fine scroll patterns. Lifter is marked “22 Cal / Long”. Mounted w/ XXX grade fancy feathercrotch walnut, pistol grip w/ebony insert & steel shotgun butt. Stock & forend checkered in “H” style pattern. Left lower tang is marked w/ assembly number “5529” followed by “XXX” & “22 S”. Top tang mortise of stock is marked “22” w/ matching assembly numbers “5529” as is toe of buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Winchester Factory Letter & copy of original ledger entry confirming special order features: 22 Cal, Oct Bbl, Plain trigger, Checkered PG stock, Shotgun butt, Casehardened, Engraved and shipped Sept 8, 1884 on order 13738. This was the first year of the 1873 Rimfire. This rare example is the first engraved 1873 Rimfire according to factory records. Only eight engraved 1873 Rimfires were ever produced. CONDITION: very fine. Receiver retains most of its fine original case colors w/ balance toning & silvering at high points. Bbl. & mag. tube have 80% plus factory blue w/ minor marks & pinprick oxidation. Stock & forend w/ much original finish & clean checkering. Tiny chip of wood missing on left side of receiver. Two tang screw holes are empty w/ no fillers. Hammer has strong case color w/ trigger turning silver & lever a darker case color patina. Buttplate is smooth patina. Extractor is intact. Lifter has mellowed to fine mustard color. Screw heads are very fine. Mechanics are crisp. Bright bore. A rare early factory engraved deluxe rimfire rifle for the discriminating collector. Received in warehouse August 18, 1914, shipped on August 18, 1914. Shipped to Remington Arms UMC Company, New York. CONDITION: bbl. & mag. tube have original blue w/ some fine surface oxidation. Receiver has original blue blended w/ cold blue. Faint saddle ring mark on left side. Areas on left side show signs of oxidation. Buttstock has minor nicks & scratches. Original finish blending w/ hand worn patina. Bore is dark w/ moderate pitting. (19-5078/BT). CURIO. $1,500-2,250.
