RARE CONNECTICUT MARKED ENGLISH HANGER.

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 763)

For a nearly identical hilt, see plate 57.S on page 80 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. RARE U.S. MODEL 1840 ENGINEER OFFICER'S SWORD.

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 6 of 763)

Exceedingly rare 1840 Pattern US Engineer 1840 officer's sword. The small and elite Corps of Engineers drew top graduates from West Point. There were only 39 Engineer Officers at the time of this sword's production. They played a key role in the country's security in building forts and public projects, mapping the country's westward expansion, etc. This pattern was adopted for the corps shortly after the topographical department was split off into a separate organization (until 1863). Both organizations were small and their swords are correspondingly rare, with only a few known to exist. This sword used a triangular epee style blade reminiscent of a European small sword, but uses a quintessentially American motif for the gilt brass hilt: a coiled rattlesnake winds around the grip, its head at the pommel and tail with rattles at the base, resting inside the counterguard. Knuckle bow is flat, with floral motifs at top and bottom with star at center having clouds with Roman legion style thunderbolts jumping out above and below. Folding plain counterguard on reverse. Obverse with raised Engineer castle at center, 26 stars at left, large single star at right that unwinds in a floral spray along the lower edge. Blade is hollow ground, etched with floral motifs for twenty inches in each channel. "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield" at base of reverse channel, with "U.S. Corps of Engineers" etched in reverse channel, with trophy arms and US flag above, and American eagle with ribbon under stars and sunburst before finial leafy vine. Black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. CONDITION: Excellent. Lots of original gilt to the hilt with just minor wear to gilt on grip and some rubbing to high points of scroll on counterguard. Blade is bright, etching is very visible. Frosting is thin, but present. A few grey spots including two in area of corps etching, but the designation is still clear and fully legible. Black leather scabbard solid with good finish. Rings and stud present. Rubbing to edges of upper mount showing dark brass beneath. Small similar spots on middle mount. An extremely scarce sword in extremely good condition. (SR). PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.Blade Length: 31 - 3/4"Overall Length: 37 - 1/2" Condition: Dimensions:

LOT OF 2: AMERICAN REVERSE-P HILTED CAVALRY SABERS WITH DECORATED BLADES.

Lot # 1013 (Sale Order: 13 of 763)

Lot consists of: two American cavalry sabers patterned on the British 1796 pattern light cavalry saber that were very popular with mounted officers and troops from 1800 and the War of 1812 into the 1840's. Both have reverse-P hilts with birdshead pommels, crossguards with langets, etched blades and metal scabbards, likely Birmingham made, but certainly for the American market. (A) Mounted with gilt brass hilt and scabbard. Bone grip is carved with bands and spiral grooves. Blade is blue, gilt, and bright etched. Obverse is drypoint etched with two floral motifs and a panoply of arms, all gold washed on blue, separated by two etched bright panels. The blue terminates in a flame-like, scrolling, floral spray. Reverse has a similar arrangement of etched motifs, but the panoply has the dealer name "Spies" in an arc. Adam Spies began his career as an apprentice working for Christopher and D.D. Wolfe, and even represented that firm in England for several years before striking out on his own in New York. CONDITION: Excellent hilt with no chipping to grip and significant gilt on the brass. Reverse etching rubbed slightly just above the ricasso and on the obverse some grey spotting on the blue floral flourish ending the panel at mid-blade. Bright, smooth metal above the blue panel on both sides. Scabbard is very good, no gilt remaining, but mellow brass and no dents. Throat and rings in place. (B) Faceted iron hilt showing mostly bright. Backstrap has side ears. Ferrule is faceted as well. Grip is black leather with thin iron wire, set in three twisted strands. Blade is drypoint etched and gold washed on a blue panel terminating in floral spray and scroll. Obverse with gilt scrolling foliage with a pole and liberty cap at center. A broad American eagle with upraised wings and E Pluribus Unum ribbon in its beak and somewhat square shield on its chest has floral scrolls above and below. Reverse of blade has gilt trophy of arms at bottom with "WARRANTED" in a cloud edged scroll. Above that a mounted dragoon flourishes his saber, with a small panoply of arms overhead and two scrolling floral sections that mirror the termination of the blue panel in floral scrolls. The blade has a broad tip and an impressive kilij style back edge extending ten inches from the tip. CONDITION: Two loose strands of wire on the grip. Minor dark spotting on the hilt. Vivid gold and blue on the blade, which has a good edge and point. Scattered grey spotting to the bright metal above the blue panels on either side. Blue panels retain most of their gilt border lines at the edges. A rubbed gilt panel 2-1/2" long on the back edge next to the guard probably contained a US retailer's name. This is an impressive pair of American sabers from the early 1800s. Blade Length: (A) 31" (B) 33"Overall Length: (A) 35 - 1/2" (B) 38" Condition: Dimensions:

BRASS HILTED "HONOR AND MY COUNTRY" INSCRIBED SABER WITH SCABBARD.

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 18 of 763)

This beautiful saber is an American mounting, circa 1792, of an import blade, likely of German make, with lustrous bluing and drypoint etched motifs with gilt wash and highlights. The blue extends 11" from the guard on either side and terminates with flat ends. The obverse is etched with a short geometric and floral panel just above the narrow ricasso. Above that at panoply of arms with a liberty cap on a pole leads to the principle motif: a large American eagle with a US shield on its chest, fifteen stars overhead, and a knotted ribbon above, reading E Pluribus Unum. The motifs are topped with a wreath of victory and a finely detailed seven-pointed star. The reverse has a similar geometric and floral panel at the base, with a small floral motif above. The uppermost element is panoply of crossed cannons, flags and a liberty cap rising above, atop a pole. The principle element, however, is a boldly etched, "HONOUR AND MY COUNTRY" just below that panoply. The grip is a simple wood grip with black finish, very American in its simplicity, with a simple, round, channeled pommel. The guard is narrow, flaring slightly along the underside to display beveled edges forming an elongated diamond on the exterior, before tapering in again to form a narrow, flat-sided counterguard with a slightly curved flat quillon that ends with a squared off tip, echoing the simple ends of the blued panels. Scabbard is brown leather with dark brown leather collar. CONDITION: Excellent. Very slight thinning to the blue in the upper areas, for the most part rich with good luster. Motifs are gold filled and given bright border highlighting. Gilt border lines are visible to blue panels. Upper blade is grey with dark grey spotting, but good edge and point. Grip has very slight play, shows minor wear to the black finish at points of contact for ridge of holder's palm and finger tips. Scabbard is excellent. No breaks. Good seam. Mixed brown and black with overall crazing and flaking to thin finish, but showing well. No mounts and likely never had any. The throat has narrow leather band sewn around it that may have held a ring or other form of attachment to a belt or baldric. It is possible another such band with a ring was positioned at the midpoint and is now missing. Intact leather scabbards of the period are very rare. A very beautiful sword with quintessentially American hilt form and motifs of the early Republic. (SR)Blade Length: 32 - 1/4"Overall Length: 38" Condition: Dimensions:
