serial #22669, 32 rf, 6" octagon barrel with an about very good bore. This revolver is in full factory silver plated finish with original checkered ivory grips. The gun shows matching assembly code "12" on side of grip frame, face of cylinder and rear face of barrel. The grips are each beautifully marked in period ink "22669". The revolver retains between 80 and 85% original silver plate with areas of loss showing a pleasing smooth brown patina. The silver shows wonderful light tarnish and shows some scattered light bubbling with striations visible on the right side of the frame. The two piece checkered ivory grips rate excellent with no cracks or chips and showing just light wear. The gun comes in an original mahogany casing with soft wood bottom and shows proper scribe marks around hinges and lock. The case is lined in green baize and partitions remain sound. The exterior or the case retains about 95% original finish while the interior is excellent as well with just light fading to lining. Included in the case is a full box of Union Metallic Cartridge Company cartridges. The box rates good plus as wrapped in cellophane. An extremely attractive cased Smith No. 2 Army. serial #1943, 22 short, 3 3/16"round barrel with a very good bore. This revolver shows fabulous intertwined relief floral scroll with very finely punchdot shaded background. The frame is engraved in full coverage on the sides and backstrap with only the frontstrap and bottom surface of frame not engraved. The cylinder has scroll between the flutes and the sides of barrel show scroll for perhaps 1 1/2" from cylinder. The condition is very nice with the frame retaining about 90% original blue, the cylinder has flaked to about 25%, mostly just in the flutes and the barrel retains about 75% original blue. All loss looks to be from flaking and all exposed areas show a pleasing smooth brown patina. The is a small amount of extremely light pitting on the sharp side edges of the barrel rib and the top of the barrel rib is all a gray brown patina. The revolver wears a pair of mother-of-pearl grips which fit well and show proper age and slightly age dulled exterior surface. The gun comes in a nice period mahogany dealer or factory casing with faded burgundy baize lining and proper softwood bottom. The case retains nearly all of its original varnish and scribe marks remain visible around the hinges and lock. Included in the case is a partial box of Union Metallic Cartridge Company No. 1 cartridges, the box has good top label with the two short edges of the lid missing. serial #20517, .44 cal, 8" octagon barrel with a bright very good plus bore showing some spots of light oxidation mostly nearer the muzzle and otherwise strong rifling throughout. This is a very fine example of an early military-accepted New Model still retaining the earlier style silver cone front sight. The metal surfaces retain about 85% original bright blue showing scattered flaking to a pleasant gray-brown patina, a few small scattered spots of light dings, tool marks and minor pinprick pitting. The triggerguard has toned to a nice ocher patina showing scattered light freckling, the screw heads show some light slot wear but still retain some hints of fire blue. The sides of the trigger retain very good fire blue and the hammer shows some lovely case-hardened colors throughout with toning to a smoky gray patina. All markings remain clear with "NEW MODEL" stamped to the right of the barrel address and all major components appropriately stamped with sub-inspector marks. The smooth walnut grips are pencil-numbered to the gun and remain in near excellent condition showing strong original finish, scattered light dings and handling marks. The grips retain strong sub-inspector marks on the bases and a lovely boxed "GP" cartouche on the left panel. The barrel, cylinder and triggerguard are all matching the frame and the action functions crisply with excellent timing and lock-up. serial #7948, 38 RF, 3 1/2" octagon barrel with a very good bore showing some scattered spots of oxidation and strong rifling throughout. This attractive revolver is factory-embellished with fine foliate scrollwork along the frame and cylinder accented by punch-dot shading. The barrel flats feature circular geometric motifs continuing onto the topstrap with a starburst motif atop the breech and there is an area suitable for a small monogram behind the hammer that appears to have had an "M" very lightly scratched into it at some point. The metal surfaces retain about 75% original nickel finish with most of the loss due to the sides of the frame and gripstraps flaked and toned to a smooth gunmetal gray patina that is blending nicely with the nickel, some scattered smaller flakes, a spot of scratches along the barrel on the right side and minor dings. The screw heads show some light slot wear but a few still show good fire blue, the sides of the trigger show very nice strong fire blue and the barrel markings remain clear. The smooth mother-of-pearl grips are scratch-numbered to the gun and remain in near excellent condition showing just a couple tiny cracks forming at the edges and perhaps a few other minor handling marks. The cylinder plate and cylinder are matching but there is no corresponding conversion number stamped on the cylinder plate or barrel and the remaining serialized parts are matching. serial #500813, 10 ga. (3 1/2''), 32'' barrels choked a light and a tight full with bright excellent bores. This shotgun is in a remarkable state of preservation. The barrels retain about 97-98% original blue, the loss due to some light muzzle wear and some minor light scratches and handling marks, chiefly on the left tube near the muzzle. The frame retains about 98% original color case-hardening which is quite vivid in spots and shows the typical loose open Ithaca scroll along with gamebirds left and right. The triggerguard retains nearly all its original blue as do the forend iron and the latch. The checkered capped pistolgrip buttstock and splinter style forend are of nicely figured walnut and rate excellent plus with virtually all of their original finish, you need to hunt to find a handling mark. The gun locks up tightly and functions properly, lever remains well right of center and the gun shows little if any use. Color case-hardened finish on the standing breech face remains very strong. There is very light flaking and the very beginning of a tiny crack at the rear of the upper tang. Overall an absolutely super Grade 2 NID big bore 10 in an uncommonly fine state of condition. The barrel and magazine tube of this very fine 1900-made rifle retain about 95% original blue showing some scattered light handling marks and even thinning overall. The action likewise retains about 95% original bright blue showing some scattered light flaking to a pleasant gray-brown patina and some fine striations along either side. The nosecap and magazine ring both show strong bright blue with light flaking. The hammer, lever and crescent steel buttplate all show strong case-hardened colors throughout with some light freckling along the buttplate and toning to a mild gray patina along the lever. The lever still retains some remnants of protective lacquer while the extractor and trigger show attractive hints of fire blue, the fire blue along the loading gate remains particularly brilliant. All markings remain crisp and clear. The plain walnut stocks remain in near excellent condition retaining about 95% original varnish with just a few sparsely scattered worn areas along the forend, some light dings and scratches overall. The rifle is sighted with standard sporting rear, small German silver blade front and the action seems to function well mechanically. A very attractive example that has seen only light use. .42 cal., 37" octagon barrel with a bore that shows some light oxidation but rates good plus. Francis Reynolds is listed in the New York City Directories as a gun maker, importer and engraver. He was an accomplished engraver as evidenced by the lovely work we find on this rifle. The top of the barrel is engraved "F. Reynolds N. York" with some scroll in the breech area along with double silver bands. The lock is engraved with relief floral scroll with a walking buck in panel scene and with "F. REYNOLDS" engraved at bottom of hammer. The stock is adorned with wonderful engraved German silver furniture including a large rectangular pierced patchbox which is engraved with a dog chasing a deer and with fabulous floral scroll and shell motif adjacent to and to front of the patchbox. The left side of the butt shows a large engraved German silver eagle on cheekpiece. German silver deer inlay at buttplate with a five pointed star to either side. The sideplate has a fancy scroll tail and there is an additional engraved oval ilnay ahead of sideplate. The triggerguard forms a pistolgrip and is also nicely engraved with scroll. The barrel retains an even brown patina overall with some scattered light surface oxidation present, it may have been very lightly refinished long ago. The lock and tang are an even gray patina with some scattered light oxidation staining present but with a nice honest surface. The walnut stock is finely checkered at wrist and has a graceful rounded cheekpiece on left side of butt. The stock rates very good plus retaining 95% original finish. The checkering is flat top style and there are some scattered very light bruises within the checkering and on other surfaces to a small extent. The German silver furniture all shows a pleasing patina. The toeplate is beautifully scroll engraved with a fancy scroll finial to the front. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade front, there is no provision for a rear barrel sight and folding lollipop style tang peep sight is present. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers and the hammer does not stay at full cock. This is a very handsome American sporting rifle by this talented New York City maker. Fine High Grade Nathaniel Whitmore Percussion Target Rifle

.43 caliber, 32" heavy octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a very fine example of these quality Massachusetts made rifles. The back action lock, tang and barrel breech all bear tasteful full coverage relief flowing scroll engraving with punch dot shaded background. The rifle is stocked in rosewood and has German silver patchbox, buttplate, fancy scroll sideplate and oval escutcheon on the cheekpiece, all of which are beautifully engraved in the same style as the lock and breech. The triggerguard is a scroll and spur style and is silver plated as is the toeplate, both of which are also nicely engraved and show a nice blue tarnish. The barrel is marked "N. WHITMORE CAST STEEL" with tasteful light scroll engraved border. The barrel which measures 1/41" across the flats bears a pleasing smooth and quite even brown patina mixed with some original brown finish. There are some scattered patches of light oxidation staining and just a few scattered light pits present. The lock is a pleasing smooth gray color, a mix of patina and faded color case-hardened finish. The top tang is much the same as the lock and the barrel breech is also, however the breech shows subtle color on the bottom half. The nipple shield and bolster are very nicely formed with a gold blow out plug which is engraved with a daisy blossom. The stock retains 95% of its original finish and has a wonderful rich appearance with a superficial crack running along the grain from the end of the lock to the buttplate, it is not deep or structural. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers, false muzzle and original scope mounts fitted in dovetail at muzzle and in threaded hole in top tang. There is no provision for a rear barrel sight but the tang hole could hold a lollipop peep sight and the front dovetail could hold a conventional front sight. The distance between the scope mounts is 34 5/8" and the inside diameter of the rings is .69" rear and .71" front. This is a very nice rifle. Whitmore is most famous for the halfstock rifle he built for U.S. Grant after the Civil War which is now housed at the Smithsonian. A lovely American percussion target rifle. .43 caliber, 32" heavy octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a very fine example of these quality Massachusetts made rifles. The back action lock, tang and...more barrel breech all bear tasteful full coverage relief flowing scroll engraving with punch dot shaded background. The rifle is stocked in rosewood and has German silver patchbox, buttplate, fancy scroll sideplate and oval escutcheon on the cheekpiece, all of which are beautifully engraved in the same style as the lock and breech. The triggerguard is a scroll and spur style and is silver plated as is the toeplate, both of which are also nicely engraved and show a nice blue tarnish. The barrel is marked "N. WHITMORE CAST STEEL" with tasteful light scroll engraved border. The barrel which measures 1/41" across the flats bears a pleasing smooth and quite even brown patina mixed with some original brown finish. There are some scattered patches of light oxidation staining and just a few scattered light pits present. The lock is a pleasing smooth gray color, a mix of patina and faded color case-hardened finish. The top tang is much the same as the lock and the barrel breech is also, however the breech shows subtle color on the bottom half. The nipple shield and bolster are very nicely formed with a gold blow out plug which is engraved with a daisy blossom. The stock retains 95% of its original finish and has a wonderful rich appearance with a superficial crack running along the grain from the end of the lock to the buttplate, it is not deep or structural. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers, false muzzle and original scope mounts fitted in dovetail at muzzle and in threaded hole in top tang. There is no provision for a rear barrel sight but the tang hole could hold a lollipop peep sight and the front dovetail could hold a conventional front sight. The distance between the scope mounts is 34 5/8" and the inside diameter of the rings is .69" rear and .71" front. This is a very nice rifle. Whitmore is most famous for the halfstock rifle he built for U.S. Grant after the Civil War which is now housed at the Smithsonian. A lovely American percussion target rifle. This rifle features checkered pistolgrip stocks of standard grade walnut. This rifle is not only a special order piece but it retains a high degree of original finish overall. The barrel and magazine retain 95% original blue finish with the loss coming primarily on the high edges where metal is silvering. The action shows 90% original blue overall with most loss due to thinning on the belly and front section of action. The sliding loading gate shows lots of original blue and the lever and hammer show a good deal of original color case-hardened finish. The checkered pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend rate near excellent with 95% original finish remaining overall and with some light wear to the checkering on the belly of the forend. The pistolgrip is the early style with curved bottom and the toeline of the stock show a vacant hole which once held a sling swivel, there is no evidence of a corresponding swivel having been mounted on the front end of this rifle. The gun is in very nice condition showing over 90% of a period arsenal refinish which shows age and has a very nice appearance. The metal where finish is missing shows a nice age brown patina indicating that this finish has been on the gun likely since the period of use. This revolver is marked on the butt with Schuyler, Hartley & Graham's "SH" in diamond mark and is in the rare and desirable 44 Henry Rimfire chambering. The barrel shows the typical commercial address ending in "RUSSIAN MODEL" and has integral front sight blade forged as one with the barrel. The metal surfaces of the revolver show an even brown patina overall with some scattered light salt & pepper pitting which is very minor. The two-piece walnut grips are properly stamp-numbered on interior surface and they rate near very good with perhaps half of their original finish remaining and with light handling marks and softened edges from the years. The right side of the frame shows what appears to be the number "12" rudimentarily engraved in 1/8" tall numerals. The cylinder locks but can be rotated off of the locked position by hand. .48 cal, 30'' medium-heavy octagon barrel measuring 1 5/16'' across the flats, with a bright excellent bore showing a couple spots of light pitting near the muzzle, and a light counterbore for ease of loading. Barrel is a mix of fading original plum brown and toning to a light pewter gray, with some sparsely scattered spots of very light oxidation staining here or there. It features a heavy octagonal based simple blade front sight and longleaf flat-top rear with step-adjustable elevator. There is an extended rear aperture sight as well, affixed to the barrel, adjustable for windage and elevation, the edges lightly chiseled reminiscent of J.S. Dutton's work, the long leaf aperture with gradient scale to 800 yards. The barrel is maker marked on its left diagonal flat ''HH Rowell'', flanked by one piece federal-style eagle stamps. The balance of the iron furniture is all a smooth pewter gray patina. The back action lockplate shows some very light open flowing scroll, and is maker marked identically to the barrel, and has a wide arcing hammer with dolphin nose front. There is a heavy pewter nosecap with all of the balance of the furniture being silver. There are arrow shaped wedge escutcheons, a Spartan forestock inlay, single spur triggerguard, toeplate, patchbox with gold plated lid, butt inlays very similar to Dutton's work, un-engraved chiseled rectangular butt inlay and an open scroll lock screw escutcheon, all of silver; the crescent buttplate is actually nickel silver. The American walnut stock rates very fine with much original varnish and the expected light handling marks, showing some stunning grain figure in the butt and coarse flat-topped checkering at the wrist. The lock is dual-acting and the rifle is equipped with double set triggers which seem to function well. Horace Hall Rowell was born in Hooksett New Hampshire in 1830, moving to California after his brother in 1853. (His dad was a drummer in the war of 1812) Rowell mined for three years, then opened up a gunsmithing shop, which he lost to fire, relocating to Sonora and opening again in 1875. It is no stretch to think that perhaps Mr. Rowell had seen Dutton's work ''back east'' and remembered it, slightly emulating some of his designs within his work. About 12 ga. by .40 cal, 27 3/4'' barrels, shotgun rating about very good with scattered light pitting, the rifle very fine with a bit of pitting sparsely scattered in the grooves. The barrels retain a strong pewter and brown damascus twist pattern their full length while the under barrel is an overall plum brown with light toning to pewter, also with the sparsely scattered very light scratch or handling marks here or there. Barrels feature a silver blade front sight in slightly raised ramp and simple v-notch semi-buckhorn rear and are stamped ''C Slotterbeck'' along with ''C Slotterbeck Lakeport Cal'' within a lightly engraved field. The breeches are a silvery case-hardened patina showing gold blowout plugs with light engraving on the rib extension, the long tang lightly engraved as well. All of the metal surfaces are primarily a dull gray-pewter patina, with some toning to brown. The back action locks and hammers with some light engraving, continuing onto the sculpted tailpipe with a bit of light engraving on the bow. The front extension shows some very light engraving, the bottom barrel nipple protruding through it, the rear of the tang marked with an 1868 patent date. The English walnut stock rates very good showing an old light refinish many years ago, the coarse checkering patterns with mullered borders remain very nice and were finished flat-top when original. The left side of the butt has an oval silver monogram plate which is engraved ''Chas Plass''. The locks seem crisp and mechanically functional, the upper hammers both in time. The front trigger fires both the bottom and right hammers and the right hammer screw is a later replacement. What is likely the original trumpet shaped ramrod is present, perhaps showing a repair at its tip. Slotterbeck needs no introduction here and was a famous California gunsmith probably known best as a retailer of Deringer pistols, this example with the Lakeport address putting the gun in the 1870s. Charles Plass was a well-known Napa Valley landowner, there is no definitive way to prove whether this was Charles Plass the elder or Charles Plass the younger who killed himself ''by shooting'' at the age of 82 after being ''despondent''. The barrel and ejector rod housing of this 1929-made revolver retain about 94% original blue showing some light holster wear along the high edges, a hint of minor freckling and handling marks. The cylinder retains about 85% original blue showing high edge wear and overall thinning to pewter gunmetal patina and a spot of light pitting along one of the flats. The backstrap and triggerguard retain about 40% original blue, mostly present in the protected areas with the balance worn to a smooth gray patina along with some light brown freckling. The frame and hammer retain bold case-hardened colors throughout particularly along the right side, with the high edges and areas along the left side toning to a silvery case-hardened patina, the left side also showing some scattered tiny spots of minor oxidation staining and light pinprick pitting. The screw heads show some light slot wear, all markings remain crisp and clear including the Rampant Colt on the left side of the frame and the trigger retains bright fire blue along the sides. The black checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colt in an oval are scratch-numbered to the gun and remain in very good plus condition showing some very faint smoothing and scattered light dings. There are some additional scratched initials on the interiors of both panels but they are difficult to discern. The interior right sides of the backstrap and triggerguard are numbered to the revolver and the action seems to function well mechanically with solid timing and lock-up. The screw heads show some light slot wear, all markings remain crisp and clear including the Rampant Colt on the left side of the frame and the trigger retains bright fire blue along the sides. The black checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colt in an oval are scratch-numbered to the gun and remain in very good plus condition showing some very faint smoothing and scattered light dings. There are some additional scratched initials on the interiors of both panels but they are difficult to discern. The interior right sides of the backstrap and triggerguard are numbered to the revolver and the action seems to function well mechanically with solid timing and lock-up. serial #353007, 32-20, 5 1/2" barrel with a bright near excellent bore. The barrel and ejector rod housing of this 1929-made revolver retain about 97% original blue showing some high edge wear along the housing, some scattered light scratches and handling marks. The cylinder retains about 90% original blue showing some light high edge and operational wear and a small spot of pinprick pitting at the front edge of one flat, while the backstrap and triggerguard retain about 80% original blue with the gripstraps toning to gray-brown patina, along with minor high edge wear. The frame is toning to a silvery-gray case-hardened patina with some light brown freckling and perhaps a few errant pinprick pits but retains vibrant case-hardened colors in the protected areas and the trigger shows lovely brilliant fire blue on the sides. All markings remain crisp and clear and there is an "&" rework mark on the right side triggerguard but no additional rework numbers visible. It seems likely in this case that the hammer was replaced as it is the slightly later style introduced in about 1935 with the polished sides and blued back. The revolver wears a set of wonderful checkered and carved antique ivory grips that remain in excellent condition and fit the frame superbly. The grips are carved with an attractive foliate motif and show some nice age striations and toning to a mellow off-white patina. The grips are constructed of two ivory panels joined together by a wooden spacer in the style of the earlier one-piece grips; the front surface of the spacer is ink-numbered to the gun. All of the serialized parts are matching and the action seems to function well mechanically with excellent timing and lock-up. A nice little 32-20 that can still be enjoyed at the range. serial #2478, .74 caliber Brunswick-rifled belted ball (.816'' outside diameter), 31'' barrels with bright excellent bores. The barrels on this heavy dangerous game rifle retain all of their original lovely swirled pewter and two-tone brown damascus pattern their full lengths, the left side showing an area of pitting for about 4'', near the muzzle, which is light for the most part and unobtrusive. The arm features a simple bead front sight and three leaf express rear and is marked ''Charles Lancaster 151 New Bond St., London Registered April 19, 1848'' on the rib. The patent breeches show strong remnants of color case-hardening with some color peeking through, each with platinum blowout plugs and small inlaid platinum bands at their rear, some nice scroll on the rib extension between. The lockplates show perhaps 70% original color case-hardening, each with lovely English open flowing scroll which continues onto the hammer flats. They are maker marked ''C Lancaster/London'' in flowing ribands and have forward-sliding fire blued safeties. The tang as well shows nearly all of its original color case-hardening with the same exquisite flowing scroll. The tailpipe is engraved in a pineapple finial as is the front extension of the triggerplate, showing some nice color case-hardening. The bow of the guard shows much original blue with a checkered rearward grip spur to its rear. The bow shows a game scene of a running stag, flanked by open scroll, continuing on to the rear extension behind the serial number. There is a very nice pendulum-style patchbox showing excellent original color case-hardening and beautiful engraving on its front extension; the game scene at the center is a walking male lion. The iron buttplate is coarsely checkered and shows the same excellent scroll on its tang along with a standing stag. The English walnut stock rates very fine plus to excellent showing only light handling marks and dings here and there from the years. It features dropper points at the rear of the flats and crisp coarse checkering at the wrist and forearm, the forearm with a few bruises in between the wedge escutcheons. There is a very nice left-side rounded beaded dual shadowline cheekpiece and the butt does show a light ding at the toe which has slightly misshapen the buttplate, but it is uncracked. The arm comes in its original Charles Lancaster oak case with green baize lining and makers label on the interior. There are two bullet molds numbered to the gun, one belted round ball, one winged conical, along with a ''WD'' marked sprue cutter. There is a mainspring vise, patch cutter, nice James Dixon leather-bodied screw-off patent fireproof top flask, cleaning accessories, oil bottle, spanner, turn screw and cap tin. The Lancaster records show the rifle as: 12 lbs, 2 ft 7 in. barrels, two groove rifled for belted ball, registered April 19, 1848, sold to Major Longyear. The cylinder retains about 94% original blue showing light operational wear, some very minor oxidation staining on some of the edges and faint thinning along the flats. The gripstraps retain about 95% original blue, again most of the loss due to just some minor high edge wear, a few very small spots of minor oxidation staining and thinning along the backstrap. The frame and loading gate retain almost all of their stunning case-hardened colors showing just some very tiny pinprick pitting on the left edge of the frame, faint silvering along the high edges and some minor brown freckling along the topstrap. The sides of the hammer remain polished bright while its back surface, the trigger and screw heads show brilliant fire blue throughout, the edges of the hammer showing a little minor flaking to gray-brown patina. All markings remain crisp and clear including the circled Rampant Colt on the left side frame and the base pin head checkering is crisp and unmarred. The black checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colt in an oval remain in near excellent condition showing a few light scuffs along the high edge of the left panel and just a few other light handling marks. The right panel is pencil-numbered, the number is difficult to discern but appears to be matching. The barrel of this lovely 1886 made gun retains about 90% blue finish, most of the loss to high edge wear at the muzzle and the side of ejector rod assembly toned to brown, the remaining surfaces showing brown undertones under strong light. The cylinder is a gray/brown mix with beautiful blue in the flutes. The grip frame has about 50-60% blue, the rest showing moderate high edge wear, a mix of pewter and blue on the triggerguard strap toning to a blue/brown mix on the front and back straps. The frame shows wonderful and robust case-hardened colors, perhaps about 97%, the rest showing light high edge wear and thinning finish on the loading gate and recoil shield. The other surfaces show a few stray oxidation blemishes or very minor pitting and scratches plus a single ding on the ejector rod housing. The hammer has strong fire blue with a few small oxidation blemishes, slight wear around the spur and bright sides. The face of the trigger is pewter but the rear has vibrant fire blue. The grips are unmarked smooth period mother-of-pearl that rate about excellent and make the other surfaces pop.
