Serial no. 10162, .38 caliber rimfire, 4 1/2-inch barrel with single line maker and New-York U.S. America address. 2-line patent date marking on frame. Blued and case-hardened with brass gripstraps. Varnished walnut grips.
Condition: Good to very good. 15% blue, 30% case-hardening. Balance gray, with pitting, wear and mars. Cylinder scene very good. Action needs repair or adjustment. Missing wedge screw and loading gate spring, the ejector rod head present, but rod missing. Could not remove wedge to check serial number. 75% varnish on grips, with wear.

Rare Prototype Bolt Action Receiver and Assembly Made in 1883 by Winchester for an Improved Japanese
Serial no. 0 on bottom of frame at front, tiny number 4 on firing pin at its rear near knurled cocking knob. Overall length 9 13/16-inches, frame with bolt, bolt handle, cocking device and firing pin. Finished in-the-white.
Condition: Fine. Spots of blemishes and light patina, with white steel fading. Light nicks.
Notes: Accompanied by display card, on which is written: "The Winchester Year 17 Marata Rifle . . . In 1883 William W. Wetmore and William Mason . . . Redesigned the MARATA'S receiver and bolt. .69 caliber, 42-inch round barrel, "P" marking only visible on barrel breech. Lock marked "Springfield" but without American eagle or U.S., or date normally at lock tail. "HKP" monogram carved crudely by previous owner on left side of buttstock. No visible inspector cartouche on stock.
Condition: Very good. Brown patina to steel, with scattered pitting, wear, more pronounced on buttplate. Reconversion from percussion back to flintlock. Seams and expansion at muzzle from partially burst barrel. Stock with wear, nicks, patina, 1 5/8-inch regluing of chip at juncture of barrel with stock at breech, to left of upper tang. To right of upper tang, angle chipping of stock section, 3/4-inch long.

Oil-finished stock with inspector markings HDJ and RH within cartouches. Extra nipple in patchbox.

Serial no. 10262. .52 rimfire caliber, 22-inch barrel. Standard markings and sights. Inspector initials "G.W.S." on left side of breech of barrel. Inspector cartouche "T.D.L." on left side of stock opposite lock, with additional inspector cartouche, initials partially decipherable. "U.S." on top of heel of buttplate. "T.D.L." on top of comb of walnut stock, forward of heel of buttplate.
Condition: Very good, as reblued, the stock cleaned, with nicks, mars and wear, and crack from lock up to barrel breech. Traces original case-hardening on buttplate. Bright bore with moderate pitting.
