Ramsey started his military career at the age of 15 when he joined the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, as the American Spanish war broke out in the Spring of 1898. His service would land him at Sandy Hook Proving Ground, Watertown Arsenal, Ordnance Armory Headquarters, Rock Island Arsenal, and lastly in command at Springfield Arsenal in which this period of time from October 1944-November 1945 all new M1 rifles where marked with "SA/NFR" within a square with an ordnance wheel - other markings on stock to include a "circle P" at pistol grip, "RIA/FK" within a rectangle - retains about 98% original arsenal gray green Parkerized finish with only loss to trigger guard and - Markings: crisp & legible- trigger group housing marked "D28290-14-SA" with cloverleaf hole, "C46008-3 SA" marked hammer, operating rod "6535382 SA", and bolt marked "D28287-12SA/S-04" - Sights: protected blade front sight/adjustable aperture rear sight/genuine M84 telescope (serial numbered 9121) complete with rubber eye piece and mounting system designed by John Garand consisting of; a mounting block on the rear of the barrel, shortened rear handguard, and large single screw system for attachment - equipped with accessories - 8-rnd internal box magazine - Yr.
