Cowan's Auctions is pleased to kick off the year with a live auction on January 23, 2020, at our sales room in Cincinnati, Ohio. With a wide variety covering many collecting genres such as military firearms and accouterments to sporting firearms. Among the highlights of the auction are some rare Indian War accouterments from well-known Indian War collector Bob Snitselaar. Also, highlighted are some collectible Japanese Officer's swords and arrowheads. A fine selection of World War II U.S. Army Air Forces insignia. Collectors are sure to find an item that fits well into their collection.

.45 caliber, 5" barrel, S/N 35787 (ca. 1913).  Re-Parkerized finish with checkered plastic grips.  Typical U.S. markings with Rock Island Arsenal rework markings on right side of frame above triggerguard.  

Condition: Good.  Some scratching to frame with grips in very good condition.  Bore is bright with visible edges to rifling.

Colt Model 1877 "Lightning" Revolver

.38 caliber, 3.5" barrel, S/N 59185 (ca. 1877).  Visible numbers matching.  Nickel finish with Colt hard rubber grips.  Top of barrel marked with two-line Colt Hartford address, left side of barrel marked with caliber.  

Condition: Fair.  Moderate amount of nickel plating remaining with most were found on cylinder and barrel.  Some additional scratching present.  Some moderate wear to grips including some scratching.  Action functional in single and double action.  Bore is moderately dark with visible rifling.

**British Marked Colt 1903 .380 Hammerless Pistol

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 256)      

.380 caliber, 3.75" barrel S/N 27524 (1916).  Steel finish with checkered hard rubber Colt grips.  Slide marked with two-line Colt address and patent dates.  Frame marked with serial number.  Rear of frame near slide and barrel marked with British proofs.  

Condition: Fair.  Overall dark gunmetal finish with mixed oxidation and plum patination.  Grips show some wear with good definition remaining on grips.  Mechanically functional.  Bore shows some darkening with old worn rifling.

Hungarian FEG Model 1937 Pistol

.32 ACP caliber, 4" barrel, S/N 7227.  Blued finish with grooved wood grips.  German-style manual safety.  Slide marked with correct "jhv" factory markings and 1941 production date.  Frame forward of triggerguard shows "WaA58" waffenamt.

Condition: Good.  Most of the blued finish remains with some minor thinning on sharp edges and around muzzle.  Grips show some minor dents.  Bore shows some brightness with worn but visible rifling.

Colt U.S. Model 1860 Army Revolver

.44 caliber, 8" barrel, S/N 82563 (ca. 1862).  Visible numbers matching.  Blued finish with smooth one-piece walnut grip.  Six-shot cylinder with naval scene.  Barrel marked with one-line New York Colt address.  Grip shows script "CPL" inspection stamp of Chester S. Leonard on left with script "JT" in box of John Taylor on right.

Condition: Good to very good.  Overall mixed light and dark gunmetal finish with markings remaining legible.  Some marring around wedge.  Grips shows some handling marks and blemishes with cartouches remaining legible.  Mechanically fine.  Bore is good; some brightness with scattered pitting and scratches.  Visible edges to rifling.

Colt U.S. Model 1851 Navy Revolver

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 256)      

.36 caliber, 7.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 61197 (ca. 1856).  Visible numbers matching. Nickel plating with replacement smooth one-piece walnut grip.  Late third model configuration with iron triggerguard and back strap.  Barrel marked with one-line New York Colt address.  Frame marked with patent markings and "U.S.."  Butt shows "USN" stamp with serial number.  

Condition: Fair.  Moderate flaking and wear of plated finish with some needlepoint pitting and darkening throughout.  Markings are moderately worn but still legible.  Grips fit well and show a small missing section of wood on left side as well as some handling marks and blemishes.  Mechanically functional.  Bore is good; some brightness with scattered pitting and visible edges to rifling.

Whitneyville Rolling Block Rifle

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 256)      

.44 Rimfire caliber, 28.5" barrel, S/N 21670.  Blued and case hardened finish with carbine stock.  Blade front sight with ladder rear sight.  Blade front sight with rear ladder sight.  Barrel marked with caliber.  Upper tang marked with three-line Whitneyville Armory address and patent dates.

Condition: Good.  barrel has a smooth dark brown patination with frame showing a mixed light and dark gunmetal coloration.  Stock shows some minor handling marks and blemishes but it otherwise free of serious cracks, splits, and other damage.  Mechanically functional, though rolling block does not fully seat forward in firing position.  Bore is somewhat dark with some scattered pitting and visible rifling.

Springfield U.S. Model 1842 Musket with bayonet

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 256)      

.69 caliber, 42" barrel, no S/N.  Armory bright finish with full-length military stick secured by three barrel bands.  Top of barrel shows "V/P/[eagle]" proof marks with tang showing "1853" production date.  Beveled lockplate with American eagle and "U.S." forward of hammer, rear of hammer marked in three lines "SPRING/FIELD/1853". Counterpane shows "JS" in box cartouche of James Stillman.  Includes one U.S. Model 1840 bayonet.

Condition: Very good.  Finish shows some evidence of old cleaning with some streaked staining.  Stock has been lightly sanded with visible cartouche.  Mechanically functional.  Bore shows some old grime and dust.

Eagle Rifle Works Percussion Full Stock Rifle

Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 9 of 256)      

.38 caliber, 37" octagonal barrel, no S/N.  Blued finish with full length stock with carved cheekpiece and pinned barrel.  Blade front sight with semi-buckhorn rear sight block.  Brass fittings with elliptical patch box.  To of barrel marked "EAGLE RIFLE WORKS".  Replaced ramrod.

Condition: Fair to good.  Barrel has a deep chocolate patination overall with an added section of lead beneath hammer.  Stock has some minor handling marks and blemishes with a 3,25" crack on left side of stock under rear sight block.  Action does not hold at half cock.  Bore is fair; some cleaned pitting and wear with worn edges to rifling.

U.S. Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 256)      

.45-70 caliber, 32.5" barrel, S/N 408300 (ca. 1888).  Blued finish with military stock secured by two barrel bands.  Blade front sight with Buffington pattern rear sight.  Trapdoor marked "U.S./MODEL/1884".  Flat lockplate with three-click tumbler.  

Condition: Fair.  Most of the blued finish has worn away with an overall mottled plum and gunmetal patination to metal parts. Stock has numerous blemishes from age and use with a very stable crack rear of lockplate.  Bore is mostly dark with some scattered fouling and worn rifling.

.30-30 caliber, 20" barrel, S/N 552131 (ca. 1910).  Blued finish with plain forend and grip.  Blade front sight with added U-notch rear sight.  Barrel marked with caliber and two-line Winchester address.  Serial number forward of receiver, model markings on upper tang.

Condition: Fair.  Barrels have some minor bluing remaining with most wear to top followed by some scratches. Receiver appears to have been cleaned with some scratches remaining.  Stock has been refinished and has some handling marks and blemishes.

7.92x57mm caliber, 23.7" barrel, S/N RO767.  Mixed numbers.  Blued finish with laminate stock.  Blade front sight with tangent rear sight.  Receiver marked with Lubecker "237" code and 1940 production date.  Barrel and receiver marked thoughout with German proofs and "214" waffenampts.  Stock marked with postwar marking.  

Condition: Fair.  Barrel shows some thinning of finish with some additional scattered rust frosting.  Stock has markings and blemishes consistent with surplus arms.  Some apparent repair to pistol grip consisting of two metal tacks.  Bore is fair; dark with some rust.  Could clean to better.

.45-60 caliber, 21.25" octagonal barrel, S/N K669.  Steel finish with tacked plain forend and grip.  Blade front sight with elevator rear sight.  Barrel marked with caliber and one line Whitneyville Armory address.  Lower tang marked with serial number.

Condition: Fair to good.  Barrel has a mostly gunmetal coloration with some oxidation and light rust with some very minor needlepoint pitting near muzzle.  Frame has a similar condition.  Stock has some missing tacks and dents along with some minor missing wood near toe of stock.  Action is functional, loading gate does not appear to open for loading.  Bore is fair with some pitting and minor blended rifling.

.44-40 caliber, 30" barrel, S/N 368848B (ca. 1891).  Blade front sight with military-style 200-800-yard folding leaf sight.  Full-length military stock secured by three barrel bands.  Barrel marked with two-line Winchester address and patent dates.  Third-model dust cover with caliber on bottom of brass elevator.  Upper tang shows model markings with serial number on lower tang.  No other markings visible.

Condition: Good.  Overall dark gunmetal coloration to metal parts with some scattered needlepoint pitting.  Stock has some minor dents and blemishes consistent with age but no serious cracks, splits or other major damage.  Action is sluggish but functional.  Bore is good; some minor grime and light pitting with visible edges to rifling.

Condition: Fair.  Barrel and frame have a mixed gunmetal coloration with some darkening in low areas.  Stock has some marks and handling blemishes but no serious cracks or splits.  Bore is fair to good; some old grime and darkening with visible rifling.

.44 caliber, 8" barrel, S/N 123679 (ca. 1863).  Blued finish with replacement one-piece walnut grip.  Topof barrel shows one-line Colt New York address.  Typical colt markings with grips showing faint military cartouches.  Cylinder appears to have been cut down.

Condition: Fair.  Overall plum patination to barrel with some evidence of cleaning and polishing to brass parts of frame.  Cylinder scene obliterated with some evidence of harsh cleaning on frame.  Mainspring appears broken.  Handling wear and blemishes to grips.

.30-06 caliber, 24" barrel, S/N 1426736 (Ca. 1933).  Blued finish with sanded type "C" stock. Bladed front sight with Model 1903 rear sight. Barrel shows no date or other markings.  Receiver marked with model, Springfield markings, and serial number.  Left side of stock appears to have faint "RA" (Raritan Arsenal) rebuild stamp.

Condition: Fair.  Finish has some minor thinning throughout with front barrel band and barrel showing a plum colored patination.  Stock appears to have been sanded, leaving some markings illegible but free of major cracks, splits, and other serious damage.  Some sand-like grit in action.  Bore is good; mostly bright with visible edges to rifling.

**Remington U.S. Model 1917 Rifle

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 256)      

.30 caliber, 26" barrel, S/N 444019.  Re-parkerized finish with sanded military stock.  Blade front sight with aperture rear sight.  Barrel marked with Remington "R", flaming bomb, and "7-18" barrel date.  Receiver marked with model designation, serial number, and Remington manufacturing markings.  Remnants of other proof throughout.

Condition: Fair.  Re-parkerized finish shows some minor wear and scratches with markings showing some rounded edges and general lack of crispness.  Stock shows typical handling marks consistent with surplus arms in addition to a rather large repair to toe of stock extending to grip with evidence of wood glue and inserted dowel or other piece of replaced wood.  Forward section of upper handguard replaced.  Bore is fair; somewhat dark with visible rifling.

.45-70 caliber, 32.5" barrel, S/N 109499.  Blued finish with full-length military stock secured by two barrel bands.  Blade front sight with Model 1879 rear sight.  Barrel marked with "V/P/[eagle]" over additional firing proof.  Trapdoor marked "U.S./MODEL/1884".  Flat lockplate with two-click hammer tumbler.  Counterpane shows 1891 cartouche of Samuel Porter. Missing rod bayonet.  

Condition: Overall plum patination with some light oxidation frosting.  Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes consistent with age and use but no apparent serious cracks or splits.  Bore is good; some minor pitting with visible edges to rifling.

Condition: Very good.  Some minor scratches to frame with some additional discoloration on left side of frame.  Some minor handling marks on stock.  Bore is good; some scratching.

12 gauge, 27.5" barrel, S/N 80308.  Length of pull 14.5", drop at heel 2.25", modified choke.  Blued finish with checkered forend and grip.  Receiver engraved throughout with floral scrolls.  Fitted with recoil pad.

Condition: Very good.  Some minor rust frosting on receiver with some very minor scratching present.  Some wear to stock finish with some flaking and wear present.  Stable 2" crack foward of receiver on forend.
