Revolutionary War Era French Charleville Model 1763-66 Flintlock Infantry Musket, NVSN, .69 cal., 44'' barrel with bayonet lug at muzzle marked ''C'' near the breech and ...morehas three spring-retained barrel bands (top band of the double-strap type with integral blade front sight and ramrod channel, middle band with sling swivel); bevel-edge lockplate with a pointed teat at rear is marked ''Charleville'' in script beneath the pan; other steel furniture consists of a serpentine sideplate, triggerguard having long top and bottom tangs and a sling swivel at front of bow, buttplate, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained European walnut fullstock nicely carved where the slim wrist meets the comb. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with unbushed touchhole and all original parts. Condition is very good, the steel parts having a mostly smooth deep-brown age patina with scattered erosion. Stock is smooth and solid having a crack at wrist and sideplate, but sound, a minor loss at rear of lockplate, ''ED'' carved at left butt, and nice grain and color. Action is strong; bore is clean with erosion toward muzzle. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)

Varnished European hardwood fullstock has raised carved aprons on either side of lock, a vacant brass plaque atop the wrist, and three barrel retaining pins. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with all original parts and unbushed touchhole. Condition is very good, the iron surfaces with a mostly smooth age-brown patina and scattered light erosion, the brass cleaned to bright; engraving and markings are mostly clear. Stock is smooth with only minor marks, a 2.5'' crack at right muzzle and two smaller ones below lockplate, but is solid and with pleasing color. Action is strong and sure; smoothbore is clean with a light coat of rust. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Antique British Large Bore ''East India Pattern'' Flintlock Pistol, NVSN, .75 cal., 9'' barrel without sights has 2 cannon turned rings, ''(crown)/GR/Broad Arrow'', ''(cr...moreown)/crossed swords'' and ''(crown)/17'' (indistinct) proofmarks and a deeply struck ''3'' at breech; beveled-edge lockplate with a distinct long pointed teat is marked ''REA'' under flint pan and ''1802/4/EIC'' (East India Company) within a heart-shaped cartouche vertically behind the gracefully-shaped flint cock; early-style trigger with curved tail; brass furniture including serpentine sideplate, triggerguard with long rear tang, buttcap, and single retaining thimble for the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod. Varnished European hardwood fullstock has raised carved aprons on either side of lock and atop the wrist, and three barrel retaining pins. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with all original parts; touchhole may have been welded and re-drilled long ago. Condition is very good, the iron surfaces with a mostly smooth age-brown patina and the brass cleaned to bright. Stock is smooth and solid, showing the expected marks of age and use, losses including where ramrod enters stock, a wood patch on both sides ahead of 2nd barrel pin, and a likely later coat of varnish. Action is strong and sure; smoothbore is clean. A classic example of a pistol made for the ''Honourable East India Company,'' which received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1600. At the time of this pistol's mfg. in 1802, during the height of its rule in India, the British East India Co. had a private army of about 260,000 men, twice the size of the entire British Army. Varnished European hardwood fullstock with bag-style butt has raised carved aprons on either side of lock and three barrel retaining pins. Mfg'd ca. 1810-25. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with all original parts; touchhole may have been re-bushed long ago. Condition is very good, the iron surfaces with a deep aged brown patina and heavy pitting at barrel breech and again midway down its length; brass with an aged patina. Stock is smooth and solid, showing the expected marks of use and age, two 3/4'' losses at lower barrel pin and another on left side lock apron, and a likely later coat of varnish. Action is strong and sure; smoothbore is clean showing overall light rust. A nicely proportioned example of this classic arm made for the American and British fur trades, desirable with its long barrel. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)

Antique British Short Land Pattern ''Brown Bess'' Type Flintlock Infantry Musket, NVSN, .75 smoothbore cal., 42'' pinned barrel is marked with what appear to be Birmingha...morem ''crossed swords'' proofmarks at breech and fitted with an integral bayonet lug at muzzle but no sights; rounded lockplate with pointed tail has a double-line border and is marked with a flower-like motif ahead of flint cock and what appear to be two bees behind; brass furniture including ''winged'' sideplate, heavy triggerguard with fancy upper and lower finials and mounting point for a sling swivel, heavy buttplate with long top tang, nose cap, and three fancy ramrod ferrules; iron trigger with early-style curled tail, and button-tip ramrod; one-piece European walnut fullstock with nicely carved comb. Condition is very good, the barrel with black powder pitting in area of touchhole, the iron parts otherwise having a gunmetal gray patina with clear markings, the brass showing a cleaned patina. This musket appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and original lock parts. Stock is smooth and sound showing minor marks of age and use and perhaps a thin later coat of varnish. Action is tight and functions properly; smoothbore is clean. The Brown Bess fought Napoleon Bonaparte's forces in numerous iconic battles, as well as American troops and their Indian allies during the War of 1812. Est.: $1,750-$2,750. (Antique)

Springfield Model 1795 Flintlock Infantry Musket, Type III, NVSN, .69 cal., 44.75'' barrel with bayonet lug at top behind muzzle retained by three iron bands having rear-...moremounted springs (top band of double-strap type having an integral blade front sight, middle band with integral stud for sling swivel); flat iron lockplate with integral rounded pan and projecting rear teat, flint cock with straight top-jaw guide, and iron serpentine sideplate held by two screws; one-piece iron triggerguard with integral sling swivel stud at front and long tangs having rounded ends; iron buttplate and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock with long flutes carved below comb and long pointed carved aprons on either side of lock. Mfg'd 1808-14. Condition is about good. Barrel markings are obscured by smoothed pitting, the balance of the metal showing a smooth dark brown-to-gunmetal color with scattered discoloration; both screw-retained sling swivels are missing (mounting lugs intact); the lockplate with integral pan is without markings, either having been obliterated by cleaning of pitting (lockplate has a bluish color) or by replacement, as the gun appears to have been restored to flintlock from percussion. Touchhole area is smooth as restored showing no expected black powder erosion. Stock is sound showing the normal marks of long military use, an old filled area at top of buttplate tang, and good color. Action functions well; smoothbore is surprisingly bright and clean. Modeled after the French M1863 Charleville musket, the U.S. Model 1795 has the distinction of being the first American musket produced, at the first American armory. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)

War of 1812 Era U.S. Model 1803 Early Production Flintlock Rifle, by Harpers Ferry Armory, NVSN, .54 cal., 33.25'' half octagon-half round barrel having dovetailed low-bl...moreade front and small-notched rear sights marked with ''US'' and ''(eagle head)/P'' oval cartouches at breech; bevel-edge lockplate with pointed teat at rear is faintly marked with a large spread-wing eagle over ''US'' ahead of hammer, but the Harpers Ferry and date markings behind are obscured by pitting; brass furniture including scrolled triggerguard, crescent buttplate with button on top tang that actuates the large spring-loaded patchbox which opens to a buttstock trap for patches, spare flints and small parts, serpentine sideplate, front ''band'', and fancy rear ramrod ferrule; the distinctive iron under-barrel rib has two iron ferrules to retain the plain (but later) iron ramrod having a flared tip; oil-stained walnut halfstock with a carved and fluted cheekrest and a single iron barrel key. Mfg'd ca. 1803-1807. Rifle appears to be complete as issued and in original flintlock configuration (the touchhole may have been refurbished during its period of use, but difficult to discern). Condition is very good for this early and rare variation, the barrel showing scattered cleaned pitting and a correct but later thin brown finish; the lockplate and flint cock showing cleaned pitting, faint-to-obscured markings, and gunmetal gray color; the brass with a clean aged patina. Stock is smooth and solid showing only minor use marks and a small wood loss at top of lockplate apron ahead of frizzen. Action is strong and smooth; bore is clean showing very deep rifling. The iconic Model 1803 rifle, with its distinct Kentucky rifle influences, is among the most graceful and sought-after early American longarms. Est.: $3,000-$5,000. (Antique)

Appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with bushed touchhole. Markings are clear. Condition is very good. Iron parts with a smooth aged ''arsenal bright'' finish, the brass with an aged patina. Stock shows the expected dings and marks of long military use, a gouge at left side under buttplate tang, but solid and with good color and finish. Action is strong and smooth; smoothbore is clean. Bayonet condition matches that of the gun; modern white buff leather sling is fine. This style of Brown Bess with its 39'' barrel was first mfg'd for the British East India Co.; in 1790 it was adopted by the British Army as the ''India Pattern'' musket. Est.: $1,250-$2,250. This musket appears to be in original flintlock configuration (touchhole may have been refurbished long ago, but difficult to discern), having the early transition features of integral iron flashpan and stock comb of standard height. Likely originally finished in military ''bright,'' with case hardened lockplate. Condition is very good, the metal with an old cleaned gunmetal gray patina showing scattered discoloration overall and light black powder pitting at breech, with sharp edges and clear markings. Stock is solid and mostly smooth with general marks of age and use, nice color, a sharp ''U/JS'' and ''V/AT'' inspector's cartouches on raised sideplate apron and ''CN'' behind rear triggerguard tang. Mfg'd ca. 1843 in full-browned finish but for case hardened lockplate, in quantity of only 6,000 guns. Condition is very good for its age and type, with metal surfaces showing an overall brown-gunmetal color with general moderate-to-deep age and black powder pitting. Stock is sound and smooth with light use marks, a half-inch chip at middle band, tight grain, good color, and two nice military inspectors' marks to left of lock: ''JH'' (probably Joseph Harniss) and ''WAT'' (William A. Napoleonic Wars Era European (Likely Dutch) Fullstock Flintlock Musket, NVSN, .75 cal., 39.5'' barrel with brass blade front sight (integral with double-strap top barrel ...moreband) and simple grooved rear sight; large iron lockplate with teat at rear; brass furniture including triggerguard with sling swivel mounted at front of loop and a long rear tang, serpentine sideplate, heavy buttplate with long top tang; oval plaque at wrist marked ''No 1418'', and three spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel); tulip-head iron ramrod; hardwood fullstock having nicely carved aprons at either side of lock and at top barrel tang. Condition is good+, the steel parts with a cleaned gunmetal gray color, heavy black powder pitting at barrel breech, original markings illegible, the brass with cleaned patina. Stock is solid with the expected scuffs and marks of age and military use, losses at top edges along barrel (particularly on right side), and a later coat of varnish. Frizzen spring and screw are modern replacements. Musket appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole. Model 1826 U.S. Naval Cutlass, by Nathan Starr, featuring a curved, narrow single fuller blade with ''U.S., N.STARR'' stamped at the base, and a faint inspector's mark on...more reverse. Wooden handle grip with round grooves and a minor chip at the top and bottom. Steel solid basket handguard with curved quillion. No scabbard. A rare cutlass with only 2000 produced in this contract. Condition is fair with heavy rust patina and a couple of edge nicks to the blade. The guard has a heavy rust patina, with pitting overall. Wood grip has a nice dark patina with the noted small chips top and bottom. Handle and guard are nice and tight. Blade measures 25'' and OAL is 31''. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.

Oil-finished one-piece walnut fullstock having raised carved aprons on either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1836-44. Condition is very good to fine, the iron parts showing a smooth clean overall gunmetal gray-brown with age patina and sharp markings. Stock is smooth and sound, with particularly sharp ''EB'' (probably Lt. Edmund Byrne, USN) and ''MPL'' (Major M.P. Lomax, USA) inspectors' cartouches on sideplate apron. This scarce U.S. Navy marked Model 1836 variant is identified by its ''N.W.P.'' (Nahum W. Patch) inspector's mark atop the breech and the naval anchor marking on percussion bolster (this latter marking appears to have been intentionally obscured, likely to hide later ownership). Action is extremely strong; smoothbore is clean and mostly bright. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)

Ames/Springfield/Mass.'' under hammer and ''U.S.R./1843'' vertically at rear; brass mountings including single wide barrel band, one-piece triggerguard, and inset circular buttcap; oil-stained walnut fullstock with oval ''W.A.T.'' and ''JCB'' inspectors' cartouches on raised apron opposite lock. Mfg'd ca. 1842-47, originally with browned barrel and the balance ''arsenal bright''. Condition is good. All parts and markings appear original, the iron surfaces with no original finish and scattered pitting and battering from military use, the brass with an aged patina. Stock is solid and generally smooth with a quarter-inch chip at butt, scattered light use marks, and sharp and clear inspectors' stamps. Barrel marks are clear; lock markings are somewhat obscured by pitting but mostly legible. Action is crisp and tight; smoothbore with deep black powder etching but otherwise clean. This Model 1842 was the first percussion pistol delivered to the U.S. military; these ''U.S.R.'' (U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, forerunner of the Coast Guard) marked examples are considered very rare. Antique English Large Bore Percussion Dueling or Holster Pistol, likely by George Wilbraham of London, NVSN, approx. .65 cal., 9'' octagonal barrel, with low brass post f...moreront sight, and single platinum band at breech finely engraved on its rear tang with a martial scene including a Stand of Flags over what appears to be a globe and a shield bearing the Cross of St. George (patron saint of England); beveled-edge lockplate with detailed floral engraving, ''Wilbraham'' under percussion bolster (altered from original flintlock) and sliding safety at rear; hammer engraved en suite; loop triggerguard engraved with martial scene (similar to that at breech) with lovely pineapple front and extended rear tangs. Beautifully grained piano-finish varnished European hardwood fullstock is finely checkered and has a vacant German silver plaque at wrist, two barrel keys with oval escutcheons, and hardwood ramrod with two brass tips retained by two fluted thimbles. Mfg'd ca. 1825. Condition is very good, the gunmetal gray barrel showing what appears to be a lightly etched Damascus-like pattern overall and scattered spotting, the balance of the metal a smooth dark patina with sharp engraving and clear markings, the triggerguard loop retaining approx. 85% original glossy blue. Stock shows lovely grain and coloration, sharp checkering, scattered light handling marks, and a 1'' shallow chip missing from its right edge at muzzle. U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, by Harpers Ferry Armory, altered to percussion by the nipple-threaded-into-barrel method, with bayonet, NVSN, .69 cal., 42'' barrel with...more bayonet lug at muzzle is marked ''P/(eagle head)/V'' at breech, ''1838'' on top tang, and has three spring-retained barrel bands (top band of the double-strap type with integral blade front sight and ramrod channel, middle band with sling swivel); bevel-edge lockplate pointed at rear is marked with a spread-wing eagle over ''U.S.'' beneath the brass pan remnant and ''Spring/Field/1838'' vertically behind the hammer; other steel furniture consisting of a serpentine sideplate, triggerguard marked ''SP/S'' on front tang, with a long rear tang and sling swivel at front of bow, buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock with its unique-to-Model-1816 low comb has two inspector's cartouches (faint) on sideplate apron and another below bottom triggerguard tang. Condition is very good, the barrel, barrel bands, lockplate and hammer in toned ''arsenal bright'' finish, the balance of the iron parts showing a deep age-brown patina with occasional roughness. Stock shows the expected marks of age and long military use but sound and generally smooth. Action is very strong; smoothbore is bright. Bayonet is a smooth gunmetal color with ''U.S.'' marked at the elbow. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Sharps' Pat./Sept. 12th, 1848'' on left side, and ''C. Sharps' Pat./Oct. 16th, 1852'' behind ''R.S. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' on right side; serpentine operating lever opens the dropping-block action for cartridge loading and cleaning; single spring-retained steel barrel band, trigger, and carbine-style buttplate; oil-finished walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd ca. 1859-66; converted in 1867 and after. Condition is very good to near fine, the barrel retaining 80% darkening military blue, the case hardened steel parts showing nicely mottled colors turned silver on sides of receiver. Stocks are sound showing the expected marks of military use and age, a nice ''DFC'' within a ribbon inspector's cartouche on left side of buttstock, and perhaps a later coat of light varnish. Condition is very good. Barrel has a smooth deep blue-brown patina; silvered-out case hardening on receiver mixed with scattered light discoloration, the balance of the metal being smooth gunmetal gray. Buttstock is solid and smooth with a likely later thin coat of varnish. Markings and edges are sharp; action is smooth; bore is clean with deep rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)

Stocks are sound with marks from military use and age. Edges and markings are crisp; action functions smoothly; 6-groove bore is clean with occasional spotting and defined rifling. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' on right; serpentine operating lever opens the dropping-block action for single-shot cartridge loading and cleaning, with automatic ejection; steel spring-retained barrel band, trigger, and carbine-style buttplate; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock without patchbox. Mfg'd ca. 1859-66; converted in 1867 and after. Condition is very good. Barrel is bluish-brown with scattered peppering, receiver case colors have darkened and silvered. Buttstock is smooth and sound with minor use marks and a ''DFC'' (David F. Clark) inspector's cartouche within a ribbon on left side; forearm is smooth with minor marks and two quarter-inch gouges; barrel markings were softened at time of factory refinish. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is very good with metal retaining an overall smooth brown color. Stocks are sound with the expected scars and marks of military use. Action functions smoothly; 6-groove bore is shiny with sharp rifling. Spencer arms received the personal endorsement of Pres. Abraham Lincoln after a trial on the grounds of the White House. Arms Co./Chicopee Falls'' on right; serpentine operating lever raises hinged barrel for loading prepared cartridges; oil-stained walnut buttstock has ''SWP'' (Samuel W. Porter) and ''JM'' (John Maggs or Maj. Julian McAllister) inspectors' cartouches at left wrist and a steel rifle buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is excellent, the barrel retains approx. 95% military blue; the receiver and lever with mottled case coloring; the buttplate a dull blue-brown. Stock has a few marks from age and military use, with sharp inspectors' marks, lovely color, grain and finish. Action is strong; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)

U.S. Model 1843 Hall-North Percussion Carbine, a.k.a. ''Side Lever Hall'', NVSN, .52 smoothbore cal., 21'' barrel (semi-octagonal behind lower band) with small post front...more and notched rear sights; steel receiver is marked ''U.S./S. North/Midltn./Conn./1851'' atop rear-hinged breechblock that pivots upward when long right-side lever is lowered; iron furniture including 8.5'' ring bar on left side, two barrel bands, actuating lever, triggerguard with extended top and bottom tangs, buttplate, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Barrel and iron furniture originally finished in distinctive Hall brown lacquer, with case hardened breech. Mfg'd ca. 1844-53. Condition is very good, the metal parts showing a darkened age patina with traces of brown lacquer, case hardened receiver and breechblock having silvered out. Stock with the expected marks of age and military service and with a likely later coat of varnish. Stock wrist has an old paper label that reads, in part, ''First American Breech Loading Rifle-Made at Harpers Ferry-Captured by John Brown''; another label on left buttstock is partially legible: ''Harpers Ferry'' and the date ''1837''. These Model 1843 Halls were issued to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War, and to Union cavalry regiments in the Civil War. Action is strong; bore is clean with deep rifling. Shilling'' ahead of breech; steel receiver having a Stabler cut-off (for single-shot operation) unmarked but for serial number at breech, with carbine sling bar and ring removed from left side; serpentine lever operates dropping-block action; double set triggers; oil-finished walnut forestock with single barrel key and pewter nosecap, and buttstock with carbine buttplate having sliding door to original cartridge loading tube, with a stud at belly (sling ring missing); plain hardwood cleaning rod retained by two steel ferrules. Condition is very good, the barrel having a smooth bluish-brown patina, the balance of the metal generally gunmetal gray with scattered light discoloration, silvered-out case hardening, and light pitting to hammer. Stocks are sound with light use and age marks, roughness at left side and a 1'' chip out at juncture with receiver; rod is a modern replacement. Civil War Burnside Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, 5th Model, #16481, .54 cal., blued 21'' barrel with a tall blade front and small flip-up leaf rear sights is marked ''C...moreast Steel 1864'' ahead of the latter; case hardened steel receiver is marked at top of breech ''Burnside's Patent/Model of 1864'' and the serial number; sling bar and ring mounted to left side, extended lockplate and top and bottom tangs; serpentine lever with inside release latch actuates the dropping-block action; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock having a steel crescent buttplate and sling swivel midway along its belly. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is very good to near-fine, the metal parts showing a smooth light gunmetal gray finish and silvered case hardening. Stocks are solid and smooth and retain nice finish and color; two sharp inspectors' cartouches grace the left wrist. The brainchild of famed Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, these 5th Model carbines were issued to many cavalry regiments beginning in 1863; the ''Model of 1864'' marking thus presents an enigma.
