Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 770)

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable Casehardened Receiver

The replacement blued tang number "720599" dates to 1923, the last year of production. According to the Winchester serial number manufactured date book the last serial number recorded for the Model 1873 was "720609" which would make this rifle 10 rifles from the last one manufactured. The rifle features a special order half round, half octagon barrel and casehardened forend cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. Third Model receiver with integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. Blade front and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sights. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address and "44 W.C.F." at the breech. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL" , the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1873" flanked by foliate devices and the serial number appears on the lower tang. Full length magazine tube, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment containing a 4 piece cleaning rod.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as assembled. The barrel and magazine tube retain 90% original blue finish with some muzzle and edge wear, some thinning to a smooth plum patina on the magazine tube, and overall some scattered minor dings and scratches. The dust cover has been refinished blue (replaced) and shows all of the blue finish remaining with a small amount of minor pitting under the finish. The remaining parts retain 80% original bright case colors with some light spotting on the front edge of the receiver, and there are some areas of smooth gray patina. The wood is also very fine with some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.

Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle Serial Number 5

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 4 of 770)

Highly Desirable Single Digit Serial Number 5 Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle in .38-55 WCF

Designed by John Browning, the Winchester Model 1894 rifle is one of the most famous and popular sporting lever actions of all time, and offered here is serial number 5! The rifle has the rare, very early receiver which has the screw over the loading gate entering from the outside. The highly desirable, extremely early serial number "5" is located on the underside of the frame. The lower tang directly ahead of the trigger is marked "32". According to Model 1894 expert and author Robert Renneberg in his book "The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years" he states that only two serial numbers below 22 were known to exist, number 3 and 8. Apparently this would be the third known serial number under 22. The serial number marking appears to writer to be legitimate. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address and "38-55" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG. 21 1894". The left barrel flat has been crudely marked "HE - AT- HV M902 M3". Dovetail brass blade front sight and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight. Blue finish with casehardened lever and buttplate, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fair. The receiver has and artificial smooth mottled gray patina overall. The barrel and magazine tube retain strong traces of original blue with the balance a smooth gray patina. The wood is very good with a few moderate scratches on the left side of the forearm and overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings remain crisp and clear. The action is a bit hard to cycle, nothing some oil wouldn't fix. Do not miss your chance to acquire the lowest serialized Model 1894 we have ever cataloged. A must have for the serious Winchester collector. Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.

Factory Exhibition Winchester Model 1892 Trapper Carbine

Lot # 3004 (Sale Order: 5 of 770)

Extremely Rare and Well Documented Antique Factory Exhibition Gold and Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring .32 WCF Trapper Carbine with 16 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1895 per George Madis' serial number range. The accompanying factory letter lists this trapper carbine with a 16 inch barrel in .32 caliber and half gilt and nickel finish when received in the warehouse on January 6, 1898 and shipped on April 28, 1898. Factory records list several return dates: January 22, 1901, March 14, 1904, December 21, 1904, November 12, 1907, January 21, 1908, March 2, 1908, and March 26, 1908. These dates indicate the carbine was used as a factory exhibition gun and coincide with multiple major events, including the famous Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis World’s Fair) held from April to December 1904. At this exposition Winchester had an exhibit in the Palace of Manufactures. The gun would have been seen by millions as an extraordinary example of fine Winchester craftsmanship. The St. Louis event alone had an estimated 20 million visitors. Some of the periods are very brief suggesting smaller events or perhaps directly showing the rifle off to potential well-heeled clientele. This trapper, 74929, being a factory exhibition piece is further reinforced by its deluxe factory special order finish of "1/2 gilt and nickel" which was a special order feature of other known exhibition pieces sold by RIAC including Winchester 1886 serial number 114694 and Winchester 1886 serial number 110606. The 16 inch barrel is a seldom encountered length and is desirable in that it requires no BATF exemption. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight and "32 WCF" at the breech and has a pinned blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. A 20th century Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper tang is stamped with the three-line model/patent date marking. The serial number is located on the underside of the receiver. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. It has the correct magazine retaining band as used on Model 92 carbines chambered in .32-20 or .25-20. Mounted on a carbine stock. The barrel, magazine tube, bolt, hammer, lever and buttplate are plated in nickel, and the rear barrel band and receiver are plated in gold. The factory half plated gold and nickel finish is striking and very rare.

Class: Antique

Very fine. Barrel, magazine, hammer, lever and buttplate retain 95% of the factory refurbished nickel plating with high edge wear and light flaking on the balance. The bolt retains 60% of the nickel. The receiver and barrel band retain 50% of the factory replated gold plating that is taking on an aged darkened appearance. The refinished wood is fine with a barely noticeable chip at the upper tang and some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A incredibly rare factory exhibition half plated trapper carbine worthy of the most advanced private or public Winchester collections. Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.

Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Pistol

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 770)

Excellent Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic No. 1 Target Pistol

This factory engraved Volcanic No. 1 Target Pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857-1862. New Haven Arms Company manufactured only about 225 of these small frame, .31 caliber, No. 1 Pistols with six-inch barrels. Very few No. 1 Target Pistols were factory engraved. The pistol has the distinctive six-inch, .31 caliber, Type III barrel with integral ten-shot magazine, brass frame and loading lever with finger loop. The barrel has a crowned muzzle, rounded T-bar magazine catch, brass clam shell shaped follower and nickel-silver, pinch-back, front sight. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the New Haven Arms Company legend: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14 1854" in one line. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grip and on the inside of both grips. The brass receiver has a shallow cut-out at the front of the ejection port and simple, dove-tail mounted, rear sight. The back strap and side plates and top and sides of the receiver are decorated with the standard New Haven Arms factory engraving consisting of simple, open, scrollwork with scallop and line borders. The hammer has hand cut knurling on the spur. The barrel/magazine, bolt, cartridge elevator, rear sight and frame screws have a high polish blue finish. The brass receiver and side plates were originally silver-plated. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish.

Class: Antique

Excellent. This rare pistol is all original and retains 60% of the high polish blue finish on the barrel/magazine. The New Haven Arms Company markings on the top barrel flat are crisp. The cartridge elevator, bolt and rear sight retain significant amounts of high polish blue. The hammer, and trigger have 85% of the original case colors. The delicate silver plated finish is visible on protected areas of the frame beneath the grips and behind the hammer. The balance of the brass frame has the good looking natural finish. The frame is in fine condition with sharp engraving, tight side-plate joints and minimal handling wear. The two-piece walnut grips are in very good condition and retain 80% of the high polish piano finish. There is a narrow 1-inch by 1/8-inch chip in the right grip along the back strap near the butt, and both grips have scattered handling marks. The initials "G C" are scratched in the left grip above the grip screw. This is a very good example of the rarest New Haven Arms Company small frame pistol variations; a No. 1 Target Pistol with factory engraving and silver-plated receiver. Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine

Lot # 3011 (Sale Order: 12 of 770)

Factory Engraved, Silver-Plated New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine with Desirable 25-Inch Barrel

This Volcanic lever action carbine with a very rare 25-inch barrel was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857-1858. On page 79 of "Volcanic Firearms - Predecessors to the Winchester Rifle," Lewis and Rutter indicate, "Less than twenty of the 25-inch carbines are known today." The carbine is decorated with the standard New Haven Arms Company factory scroll engraving on the receiver, side plates and buttplate heel. The brass receiver and buttplate feature the extra cost silver-plated finish. The barrel/magazine are blued and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut with a high polish piano finish. The 25-inch barrel and integral magazine have the crowned muzzle and rounded T-bar magazine catch. The barrel has a nickel-silver, half-moon front sight blade and the magazine has a brass, clam-shell shaped follower. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the New Haven Arms marking: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB.14. 1854" in one line. The receiver has semi-circular cut-outs on either end of the ejection port and has a dove-tail mounted rear sight with elevator wheel. The hammer has coarse, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The serial number is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, on the heel of the stock under the buttplate, on the inside of the buttplate heel and on the shanks of the hand-fitted buttplate and tang screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. Winchester collectors like 25 inch barrel Volcanic Carbines in that they display well in relation to other rifles in their collection.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The blue on the barrel and integral magazine has aged to an even brown patina. Surfaces of the barrel/magazine are generally smooth with some scattered patches of surface discoloration. The top barrel flat has some light pitting around the New Haven Arms Company markings. The brass receiver is in fine condition with sharp factory engraving. Considerable amounts of the silver-plated finish are present on the left front of the receiver, top flats and on the upper and lower tang. The side plate joints are perfect. The right side and bottom front of the receiver and right side plate have scattered spots of darkened silver plating. The silver plating on the crescent brass buttplate has aged to a scattered, dark patina. The rear sight, cartridge elevator, trigger and loading lever have an even dark patina. Traces of casehardened finish remain on the sides of the hammer. The straight grain walnut stock remains in fine overall condition with a few scattered handling marks and multiple cracks at the wrist of the stock. The stock retains much of the original piano finish. This is both an attractive and original example of a factory engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic carbine with desirable 25-inch barrel. This Winchester Model 1866 musket was manufactured c. 1877. This Model 1866 musket is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "Musket, Nickeled" and "Engraved". The Cody letter further states that this musket was shipped from Winchester on March 24, 1877, with 345 other arms as part of Order No. 8365. This musket has the distinctive features that include 27-inch round barrel with 24-inch magazine, 17-inch forearm, three barrel bands, sling swivels on the middle barrel band and stock and carbine style buttplate. The barrel has a block style front sight that serves as a lug for the angular socket bayonet and dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The Third Model receiver has a single upper tang screw and has the serial number stamped in block letters on the lower receiver tang. The musket has a very rare full nickel-plated finish. The stock and forearm are varnished, straight grain walnut. The barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS.- NEWHAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 25.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. This musket was engraved by Conrad or John Ulrich and features detailed scroll engraving on a punch-dot background on the sides, top and bottom of the receiver, upper and lower tang, cartridge elevator and buttplate heel. The left side plate has a round vignette depicting a standing pronghorn antelope. The engraving on this musket is illustrated and described on page 93 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. In the description the author states: "Muskets are among the most sought after types in the field of Winchester engraving".

Class: Antique

Fine. This rare engraved musket retains 90% of the period thick applied nickel-plated finish with some scattered flaking. The finish wear is most pronounced on the loading gate which has 40% of the nickel plating remaining and the buttplate which has 75% of the plating with finish wear on the heel and flaking on the body. The expertly executed scroll and game vignette remains sharp. The barrel address exhibits pitting through the plating, leading the writer to draw the conclusion that it is replated, most likely in the period. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm very good overall condition. The forearm has several shallow bruises and light handling marks. The stock shows less handling wear than the forearm but appears to have been re-varnished. This is a fully documented example of a very fine factory engraved Winchester lever action Model 1866 Musket.

The right side of the receiver is engraved with a grizzly bear in a mountain setting and the left side of the receiver has a large scene of a bull and cow elk. The engraver's signature: "J. ULRICH" is located behind the trigger in tiny letters. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured 3X or 4X fancy grain walnut with a piano finish and the Winchester "Style D" combination of fine checkering and relief carved oak leaves and acorns. The stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber shotgun buttplate with the Winchester logo embossed in the center. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber, cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO". The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, loading gate and bolt are blued and the hammer and trigger are color casehardened. The 24-inch tapered barrel has a Winchester Express front sight with colored bead mounted on a raised lug and a factory blank in the rear sight dove-tail. A Marbles "Flexible Rear Sight" with knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885" between the forearm cap and rear sight dove-tail. "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL- /ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver followed by the caliber: "33 W.C.F." Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the centerline of the barrel and receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in block letters on the lower tang behind the tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Exceptionally fine. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap have 90% plus of the original blue finish intact with a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. The barrel markings are crisp. The receiver has 85% original blue. Some light handling wear is visible on the forward bottom and takedown ring. The blue is thin on the right side and bottom of the takedown collar. The blue is thin on the bottom of the receiver and the lower tang has a few handling marks. There is a small spot (1/2-inch) of discoloration or flaking on upper corner of the left side of the receiver. The finish on the loading gate is thin with 60% blue intact. The hammer has 80% original case colors. The contact points on the bottom of the lever have silvered. The flawlessly executed engraving and highly detailed game scenes are crisp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very fine condition and retain 75% plus of the original piano finish. The checkered panels and relief carved checkering are sharp. This is a truly exceptional example of a factory engraved, special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Takedown Rifle signed by master engraver John Ulrich.

Wells Fargo Winchester Model 1887 Shotgun

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 770)

Rare, Documented, American Express Co. Factory Inscribed/Engraved Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Saddle Ring Shotgun with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter lists this rare, historically significant shotgun with a 20 inch barrel (period shortened to 19 1/4 inches) in 12 gauge, carbine sling rings and factory inscribed "American Express Co. #1" (likely a factory error as "2" is the number actually marked on the receiver) when received in the warehouse on March 25, 1892 and shipped on the same day. The shotgun was shipped with two other American Express Co. marked Model 1887s. The barrel lacks sights. The receiver has the standard "WRACO" monogram and factory saddle ring and bar on the left side and the original factory inscription "Am. Ex. Co. 2" on the right side. The lower tang has the four-line address/patent dates marking. The pistol grip stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate.

Class: Antique

Good overall as a true Old West survivor. The metal surfaces have a dark gray mottled patina mixed with some minor pitting. The forearm and buttstock have absent chips and slivers, a few long hairline cracks, and chipping along the grain. Mechanically fine. A real piece of Old West history rarely encountered! Presentation Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 770)

Extraordinary Documented Factory Silver Trim Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action .45-90 Rifle with Winchester Gun Museum Letter

The accompanying Winchester Gun Museum letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .45-90 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, "silver trims," and Lyman front and rear sights when shipped on February 9, 1895 (no mention of inscription, possibly a factory record oversight as writer believes the inscription is factory). The rifle is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 332. The inscription on the left side of the receiver reads in large bold font, "Fred R. Hoisington/1895 FROM J.M.F." The rifle is equipped with a dovetail beaded blade Lyman front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, and folding tang peep sight. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 WCF" at the breech on the top flat. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The rifle has the highly sought after factory two-tone finish (blue and silver). The barrel, magazine tube and bolt are blued. The receiver, forend cap and buttplate are plated in silver. The half silver finish is a very rare Winchester special order feature, rarer than full nickel finish. The highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The buttstock has an ebony grip insert and a solid crescent buttplate. Frederick Reed Hoisington (1868-1951) was born in Ohio and was one of seven children born to a Sri Lankan father and mother from New York. He was the father of five children and later lived in the State of New York where he died at the age of 82 in 1951.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% original blue finish. There is a small patch of pitting on the magazine tube towards the muzzle (left side). 95% original blue remains on the bolt. 98% plus attractive age darkened original silver plating remains on the forend cap, receiver, and buttplate. The inscription is crisp. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. Some original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is also very fine with a repaired sliver at the upper tang, some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Most of the finish remains. Mechanically excellent. A rare factory silver trim deluxe Model 1886 rifle with interesting period, possibly factory inscription that will add dimension to the most advanced Winchester collections!

Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3021 (Sale Order: 22 of 770)

Extremely Rare Documented Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" Lever Action Rifle with Factory and Winchester Museum Letter

This is an outstanding original example of a highly desirable Winchester "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 rifle that was manufactured in 1880. This rifle is one of only 51 "One of One Thousand" rifles manufactured in the Model 1876 series. Winchester manufactured more than twice as many Model 1873 "One of One Thousand" rifles (136). This rifle is accompanied by a 1966 dated Winchester Gun Museum letter and a 2016 factory letter that confirm it shipped as a rifle with a .45-60 caliber 26" octagon barrel, casehardened finish, checked pistol grip stock, set trigger, and "1 of 1000" marking. It was received in the warehouse on June 7, 1880, and shipped the following day with order 20253. In "THE WINCHESTER BOOK", author George Madis notes Winchester manufactured a series of seven "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 rifles with the consecutive serial numbers 10013-10018. All of these rifles were shipped from the factory on June 8, 1880. This rifle has "One of One Thousand" engraved in script letters on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver with a scrollwork flourish at the muzzle end and scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the lower barrel flats below the marking and at the muzzle. Silver bands are inlaid on the barrel immediately ahead of the receiver and at the muzzle. The full octagon barrel and full-length magazine are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The receiver has a screw-fastened dust cover rail, blued dust cover with oval "thumb print" and factory single set-trigger. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and standard, folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" below the stop screw. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade, walnut with high polish piano finish with fine checkered panels and the bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony or horn inlay. The stock is fitted with a black, hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines followed by: "CAL. 45-60" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-60" is stamped in script across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. "MODEL 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XXXX" and "822" which designates high quality fancy walnut (4X) and an assembly number which is not on the stock as it is unmarked. The serial number is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The legendary "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 and Model 1873 rifles are among the most celebrated and desirable of all American firearms. This Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" rifle would be the centerpiece of the finest collection of Winchester firearms.

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle retains 30% of the original blue and traces of the original color casehardened finish. Much of the original finish on the barrel, magazine, receiver and other components has aged to dark gray-brown patina with scattered surface oxidation. The correct replacement nitre blued loading gate retains 30% original finish. Most of the dark patina is the result of storage wear; the rifle shows only light handling wear. The engraving, barrel and receiver marks are crisp. The fine original stock and forearm retain much of the original high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and relatively minor handling marks and the horn buttplate which is a smooth, expertly made period replacement, that fits perfectly in the place of the original. The original checkering on the fine original stock and forearm shows some wear and remains sharp. This is a fine example of an extremely rare and highly desirable Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand Rifle". Provenance: The Gateway Collection.
