EXQUISITE & FINEST KNOWN JENNINGS BREECH LOADING

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 1 of 935)

RIFLE. Cal. 54. S# 384. Not only is this rifle in magnificent condition, retaining virtually all of its original finish, it was purchased by the famous early collector A....moreE. Brooks directly from one of the original principal manufacturers Richard S. Lawrence (1817-1892). Lawrence was master armorer at Sharps Manufacturing Co. in Hartford when Brooks most likely obtained this rifle. These rifles often show up in the marketplace as muzzle loading conversions, generally in very poor condition. No doubt, this is the only near pristine example known. This gun was the precursor for the Volcanics & later Henry & Winchester rifles. There are numerous articles from various texts describing history. This particular arm was made in about 1850 & shot the patented "Rocket Ball" cartridge which was loaded through the right side of the frame. The ring trigger operates the breech & the automatic pill primer device mounted on top of frame w/ rnd. cover. Gun measures 44 1/2" overall w/ 26" rnd. browned bbl. having engraved scrolls on top at breech & near muzzle around brass blade front sight. Forward section of breech, which is rnd., retains a blued fixed rear sight. The frame is case colored w/ engraved scrolls en suite to bbl. marked on left side of frame in 2 panels "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE / MAKERS / WINDSOR VT." & "O.P. DIXON AGENT / NEW YORK / PATENTED 1849". Mounted on straight grain varnished American walnut is crescent shaped case colored buttplate w/ scroll engraving on top. Trigger guard is engraved en suite & fire blued. The rectangular loading gate door & rnd. pellet priming door are also fire blued. The hammer is case colored, engraved en suite w/ distinctive 1 1/4" tapered extension for striking pill primers. It is interesting to note that Flayderman in his monumental guide to American firearms states this example was made after the experimental Jennings repeating rifle but Brooks in his 1899 catalog states that this was the first gun made in 1849 "soon after this rifle was made it was conceived that there could be attached to it a magazine that would make this a repeating rifle, carrying 20 charges & a new model was made". Remember Brooks did obtain this gun from Richard S. Lawrence while he was in Hartford. Regardless, this is an exemplary example that has no peers & would complement the finest early American rifle or Winchester collection. Listed on page 73 of the 1899 A.E. Brooks Collection catalog as item 450, it is also noted [1562], which is the # stamped on the buttstock. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of January 1852 International Magazine article. CONDITION: excellent. Bbl. & cleaning rod tube retain virtually all their original bright brown finish w/ light edge wear at muzzle. Frame, hammer & ring trigger retain much of their muted dull case color, but mostly a silver/gray patina w/ staining especially on the 1 1/2" rnd. extension to bbl. Strong traces of fire blue are found on trigger guard & inside loading gate cover & primer cover. Stock is very well fit retaining virtually all of its original factory varnish. Markings are all crisp & easily discerned. Mechanically rifle operates perfectly & bore is mirror bright showing 7 very lightly cut lands & grooves. PROVENANCE: Brooks purchased from R.S. Lawrence, Hartford, Connecticut; once part of the A.E. Brooks historical arms collection displayed in his museum / hotel / restaurant at 387 Main St. Hartford, Conn., circa 1880 & displayed until 1893; displayed at Wadsworh Athenaeum (item # 1562) 1894; pictured & described A.E. Brooks Collection catalog item # 450, 1899; U.S. Cartridge Co. Collection, Lowell, Mass. 1902; pictured & described as item # 291 in "Illustrated Catalog of United States Cartridge Company's Collection of Firearms", 1903, displayed at the Massachusetts Sportsmans Association show Boston, February & March 1902; displayed by U.S. Cartridge Co. at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition; on loan & display at Smithsonian Institute 1906- August 1931; sold by Robins H. Ritter, East Hartford Connecticut Auction 1942; David Nicholson Collection. (01-17090/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.

WELL DOCUMENTED EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE "1 OF

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 6 of 935)

1000" WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE FORMERLY ON LOAN AT THE CODY FIREARMS MUSEUM. Cal. 44-40. S# 31270. Bbl.28". The Winchester “1 of 1000” is among the most i...moreconic of American arms. Oliver Winchester marketed these superior rifles by saying that of every 100 barrels manufactured, proved and tested for accuracy, the best 1 of 100 would be put aside. Once 10 superior barrels were gleaned, they would be tested for accuracy and the best of these would be marked “one of one thousand” and the other 9 barrels “one of one hundred” (though few 1 of 100s were marked). This long gleaning process produced guns of highest accuracy and were priced at $80-100 when standard model was $30. This gun was made famous among gun collectors when Universal Studios was filming “Winchester 73” starring Jimmy Stewart. This rifle was the 4th of the “1 of 1000s” reported during the nationwide search by the movie company in 1950 (23 1 of 1000s were located during this search). Deluxe 2nd Model rifle has 28" octagonal barrel engraved in script “One of One Thousand” at breech on top flat, matching en suite engraving on lower flats and at muzzle, platinum band at muzzle. Other features include full magazine with screwed in plug, gold washed Beach’s combination front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight, and 4” tang sight. Frame is case colored and mounted on beautiful 2X flame grain walnut with checkering, crescent buttplate with trap retaining an original 4 piece steel & brass cleaning rod. Rifle is all original and matching. Matching assembly number “897” found internally on receiver tang and buttstock along with “XX” for grade of wood. Frame is 2nd model with attached dust cover rail and “thumbprint” dust cover, single set trigger. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large file of information & research including correspondence concerning discovery of this gun in 1950, original copies of May & October 1950 American Riflemen Magazines concerning this 1/1,000. Correspondence lists all owners & serial numbers of the 23 found 1 of 1000s. Original copy of 1992 Butterfield Catalog w/ this rifle on cover. This firearm was recently displayed for the Grand Re-Opening of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Firearms Museum. CONDITION: fine overall, all matching and original. Barrel retains 90% strong original bright blue finish. Magazine has strong traces of bright blue in protected areas, balance mottled plum patina. Frame and lever are overall smooth silver/gray patina with strong traces of bright and muted case colors. Stock is sound and solid with 2 small hairlines back of tang. Stock retains much of its original oiled finish with light handling wear to checkering, more so on forestock. Mechanics are crisp, with bright rifled bore with light scattered pitting. PROVENANCE: Sold by Winchester November 20, 1878 to John Skinker, San Francisco; Unknown old rifleman named “Widum” (died at the age of 82 in 1950); William Brewer; Scott Merry Collection, Tacoma, WA; 4th rifle reported in the “Winchester 73” Universal Movie Studio search, 1950; Listed in “One of 1,000, Model 1873, Winchesters First High-Accuracy Rifle” by Steve Hannagan, 1950; Robert Wyatt Collection; Pictured on cover of Butterfield & Butterfield catalog of Wyatt collection March 23, 1992; Paul Tudor Jones II Collection, 1992; Pictured and described in Edmund Lewis text “The Story of the Winchester 1 of 1000 rifles..” (p 73); Vicente Sepulveda collection, 2016; 1877 ad from John Skinker offering beautifully finished Case Hardened and checkered stock model 1873 “One of One Thousand”. "DODGE CITY RIFLE SHOOT" MARKED WINCHESTER

Lot # 3008 (Sale Order: 8 of 935)

1873 EARLY FIRST MODEL DELUXE LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF. S# 27134. This rare, possibly historic, Winchester has features that closely match the famous "One of One T...morehousand" Winchester 1873 rifles. The 1950 Jimmy Stewart movie "Winchester 73", told the story of the One of One Thousand rifle that was first prize at the "Centennial Rifle Shoot" in Dodge City, Kansas, July 4, 1876. The left side of stock of this rifle has a 2 1/2" x 3/4" rectangular silver plate marked "First Prize / Dodge City Rifle Shoot / July 4, 1879". This rifle has a combination of features that are rarely found on early Winchester rifles. Features include: 28" oct. bbl. (4" longer than standard), case colored action, single set trigger, stock and forearm of XX fancy walnut w/ checkering, combination front sight and vernier tang sight along with flat top sporting rear sight. Rifle also features full length mag., mortised thumb print dust cover and crescent steel trapdoor buttplate. Inside left of lower tang has wood grade marking "XX" followed by assembly number "326". Matching assembly number "326" is found in top tang channel of stock. The right side plate, inside just above the loading gate is marked w/ assembly # 134. The Madis book states the 1 of 1000 was no longer listed in the 1877 catalog though exception were made and several 1 of 1000's remained on hand .S# 27141 is a known 1 of 1000. Records show, this rifle S# 27134, was shipped 9-3-1877. This date may account for the lack of the 1of 1000 designation. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum records search listing the following information: "Date in: 9-1-1877 / Rifle / Bbl. shape: Oct. / Length: 28 / Trigger: Set / Stock: Checkered stock / Other Features: CH / Date Shipped: 9-3-1877 / Order # 9689". Also includes 3 piece cleaning rod held in buttstock compartment. NOTE: Although this rifle deserves further research, we have learned, through a prior owners verbal recollection, he was able to trace it's history back to 1956 when Helga Ball, widow of Harold Ball of Studio City, CA sold the rifle to Charles Doorman for $15. Also, prior research of the Dodge City newspaper archives failed to yield detailed information about Dodge City's 1979 July 4th rifle shoot. CONDITION: barrel and mag. tube retain 70% dull lightly faded blue showing edge wear and small spots of corrosion. Left bbl. flat ahead of forearm cap and adjacent to rear sight show small dents. Receiver retains a dark appearance showing traces of fading case colors. Sideplate, dust cover and lever have lighter appearance showing 40% fading case colors. Left sideplate shows area of deep wear along upper edge that appears to be the result of repeated contact with a hard object. Stock and forearm retain original finish showing age related wear with scattered scratches and handling marks. Butt section of stock shows small grain checks and spots of wear. Bore is bright w/ sound strong rifling showing small spots of very light pitting. (01-17678/DS). ANTIQUE. $18,000-27,000.
