MEXICAN WAR CIVIL WAR RED OFFICER'S SILK SASH

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 841)

Original Crimson Mexican War Era Officer’s Silk Sash Flat Style very rarely Seen. This superior example of an early US Mexican War officer’s regulation crimson silk sash is in excellent condition. The knots and tassels, at each end of the sash are a very rare flat style and are in excellent condition, as is the entire body of the sash. The Mexican–American War, also known in the United States as the Mexican War and in Mexico as the Intervención Estadounidense en México (American intervention in Mexico), was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. It followed in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas, which was not formally recognized by the Mexican government, who disputed the Treaties of Velasco signed by Mexican caudillo President/General Antonio López de Santa Anna after the Texas Revolution a decade earlier. In 1845, newly elected U.S. President James K. Polk, who saw the annexation of Texas as the first step towards a further expansion of the United States, sent troops to the disputed area and a diplomatic mission to Mexico. After Mexican forces attacked U.S. forces, the United States Congress declared war. U.S. forces quickly occupied the regional capital of Santa Fe de Nuevo México along the upper Rio Grande and the Pacific coast province of Alta California, and then moved south. Meanwhile, the Pacific Squadron of the U.S. Navy blockaded the Pacific coast farther south in the lower Baja California Territory. The U.S. Army, under Major General Winfield Scott, eventually captured Mexico City through stiff resistance, having marched west from the port of Veracruz on the Gulf Coast, where the U.S. staged its first ever major amphibious landing. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, forced onto the remnant Mexican government, ended the war and enforced the Mexican Cession of the northern territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo México to the United States. The U.S. agreed to pay $15 million in compensation for the physical damage of the war and assumed $3.25 million of debt already owed earlier by the Mexican government to U.S. citizens. Mexico acknowledged the loss of what became the State of Texas and accepted the Rio Grande as its northern border with the United States. The victory and territorial expansion Polk envisioned inspired great patriotism in the United States, but the war and treaty drew some criticism in the U.S. for their casualties, monetary cost, and heavy-handedness, particularly early on. The question of how to treat the new acquisitions also intensified the debate over slavery. Mexico's worsened domestic turmoil and losses of life, territory and national prestige left it in what prominent Mexicans called a "state of degradation and ruin"

CIVIL WAR DOUBLE ARMED AMROTYPE 34th OVI W/ FEZ

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 841)

Unknown member of the The 34th Ohio ambrotype measuring 3 3/4 X 3 inches and is unmounted but is still a very clear. The soldier is double armed with a Colt revolver and a Springfield Rifle wearing a regulation 9 button Frock coat and a slouch hat that has been turned into a Zouave fez. This image was found in Cincinnati Ohio at a local estate sale. Being how the 34th was raised there I assume this was one of their members. The 34th was raised at Camp Lucas near Cincinnati on September 1, 1861. Most of the recruits came from the western part of the state. After training and drilling, the new regiment moved to Camp Dennison on September 1, and then entrained for the front lines, arriving on September 20 at Camp Enyart on the Kanawha River in western Virginia. It initially served in the forces under George B. McClellan, and then under a variety of generals for the next two years while engaging in several raids and operations in the region. On September 25, 1861, the 34th Ohio won a victory at the Battle of Kanawha Gap near present-day Chapmanville, West Virginia. When the regiment's term of enlistment expired late in 1863, the men voted to re-enlist on December 23. They were part of Crook's Expedition against the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad in early May and fought in the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain on May 9 and later in the Battle of Cove Mountain and in other smaller engagements in the region. The 34th OVI was re-mustered as a veteran regiment on January 19, 1864, and participated in many of the battles of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, including the Battle of Opequon near Winchester, Virginia. The 34th Ohio suffered 10 Officers and 120 enlisted men killed in battle or died from wounds, and 130 enlisted men dead from disease for a total of 260 fatalities. The much depleted regiment was amalgamated with the 36th Ohio Infantry on February 22, 1865.

WOODEN CHEST ATTRIBUTED TO LEONARD WOOD

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 841)

Large wooden chest, approximately 42" x 24" x 18" with galvanized steel insert. Stenciled name and address bears the name of Leonard Wood, a US Army general and Medal of Honor recipient. As a physician, during his deployment, this trunk may have served to transport medical supplies, medicines, or personal goods which needed to be kept dry and cool in a hot, humid climate. The trunk is marked in several corners with a red "2" indicating it was part of a larger shipment of crates. Leonard Wood was medically trained and was awarded the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars while serving as an Assistant Surgeon in the Apache Campaign of the Summer of 1886. In 1895, he was the White House Physician to President Grover Cleveland. He began his long friendship with Theodore Roosevelt during his years in Washington. During the Spanish-American War he was the commander of the First Volunteer Cavalry (The Rough Riders) - Roosevelt was his second-in-command. Following the war, he served as Military Governor of Cuba until 1902. As a Brigadier General he fought the Moros during the Philippine Insurrection in 1904 and less than a year later he was named Army Chief of Staff by President William Howard Taft (who he knew in the Philippines where Taft served as Civilian Governor). In less than a decade, he had jumped from a Captain in the Medical Corps to the highest post in the Army. He resigned that position in 1914. When World War I broke out, he became a vocal advocate for preparedness. He hoped to be secretary of War, but was not appointed. In 1927 he returned home from Manila to seek medical attention of a tumor resulting from an earlier head injury. He died on the operating table of a Boston hospital on August 7, 1927. He is buried in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery. Unfortunately, we have not been able to uncover any photographic or written documentation about this particular piece. It shows wear and age, and the stencil is very difficult to make out. Very Good

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE ENVELOPE MG GEORGE PICKETT

Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 9 of 841)

Civil War Envelope addressed to Major General George Pickett during the Petersburg Va. Campaign. The letter was written by an unknown Officer and is address to Captain E. R. Baird ADC Care of Maj. Gen. Pickett. Envelope has a 10 cent Confederate stamp to the front. Excellent. Edward Rouzie Baird Residence Essex County VA; 20 years old. Enlisted on 6/10/1861 at Essex County, VA as a Sergeant. On 6/10/1861 he mustered into "F" Co. VA 9th Cavalry (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * Detailed 2/19/1862 (place not stated) (Volunteer Aid to Gen George Pickett) * On rolls 2/15/1865 (place not stated) (Aide-de-Camp to Gen George Pickett) Promotions: * 2nd Lieut 5/21/1862 (And Aide-de-Camp to General Pickett) George Edward Pickett (January 16,[1] 1825 – July 30, 1875) was a career United States Army officer who became a major general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He is best remembered for leading Pickett's Charge, the futile and bloody Confederate offensive on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg that bears his name. Pickett graduated last out of 59 cadets in the United States Military Academy class of 1846. He served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army during the Mexican–American War and is noted for his service in the Battle of Chapultepec in September 1847. After this, he served in the Washington Territory and eventually reached the rank of captain. Pickett participated in the Pig War of 1859. Near the beginning of the American Civil War, he commissioned in the Confederate States Army, and he attained the rank of brigadier general in January 1862. He commanded a brigade that saw heavy action during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. Pickett was wounded at the Battle of Gaines's Mill on June 27. He did not return to command until September, following the Battle of Antietam, when he was given command of a division in the Right Wing of the Army of Northern Virginia, in the command of Major General James Longstreet, which became the I Corps that December. His division was lightly engaged at the Battle of Fredericksburg and, along with most of Longstreet's Corps, missed the Battle of Chancellorsville while participating in the Suffolk Campaign in 1863. During the Gettysburg Campaign, his division was, much to Pickett's frustration, the last to arrive on the field. However, it was one of three divisions under the command of General Longstreet to participate in a disastrous assault on Union positions on July 3, the final day of the battle. The attack has been given the name "Pickett's Charge". In February 1864, Pickett ordered 22 North Carolinians in Union uniform hanged as deserters, after a failed assault on New Berne. Brigadier General John Peck sent Pickett a note telling him the men were US soldiers and should be treated as prisoners of war. Pickett thanked him for giving him the names, as he now knew who he was hanging. His military career came to an inglorious end when his division was overwhelmed and defeated at the Battle of Five Forks. Following the war, Pickett feared prosecution for his execution of deserters and temporarily fled to Canada. An old Army friend, Ulysses S. Grant, interceded on his behalf, and he returned to Virginia in 1866. He could not rejoin the Army, so he tried his hand at farming, then selling insurance. He died at age 50 in July 1875 from an "abscess of the liver"
