Lot # 907 (Sale Order: 612 of 882)

Iron cannon found in Lake Champlain in 1929 and so marked with acid etching at the breech. It measures 45” overall with a 2-1/4” bore. It is 6-3/4” diameter at the breech reinforcement, 5-1/2” diameter at the vent tapering to 3-1/2” before flaring to 5-1/2” at the muzzle ring. The vent hole, now much enlarged, has an iron spike driven into the internals. This possibly is the cannon found in 1929 by divers working on piers for a new bridge, the discovery of which led salvage engineer Lorenzo Hagglund on a quest that resulted in his finding the sunken ship Royal Savage that was Benedict Arnold’s flagship on Lake Champlain during the Revolutionary War Battle of Valcour. While this cannon was found several miles from that battle site, the included documentation of Revolutionary War naval battles on Lake Champlain picture cannon of similar size and shape. Also included is a copy of Lorenzo Hagglund’s write up describing the 1929 cannon discovery and his long search for the Royal Savage and the salvage of it. There is nothing to prove this came from one of those boats, only that it is similar to those used on them. It is deeply pitted as can be expected from extended time under water.
