(A) BRITISH 1796 PATTERN SEA SERVICE PISTOL.

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 676)      

Standard Sea Service pattern. Barrel marked with "(Crown) / 12" and proof marks. Stock with "(Crown) / (Broad Arrow) / 1805" just above tear drop on right side. Ramrod channel (vacant) with "4 IVI" and further proofs. Lock stamped with "TOWER" beind cock, "(Crown) / GR" in center, and further proof below pan. Belt hook stud slot is vacant. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel with freckling throughout. One screw retaining the lock has been replaced. Brass components retain a pleasing mustard patina. Wrist and butt rubbed to a lighter wood coloring as a result of handling. Lock is a reconversion. Wood has a grain seperation on left side, just in fornt of sideplate. Topjaw replaced. Markings in wood are very good, with scattered marks throughout. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good with some areas of oxidation. Brass tipped ramrod, possibly the original, retained by a single brass ferrule. Single relief raised area at tang. Brass sideplate with two screws. Brass trigger guard and buttcap, cap with a slightly raised dais in center. Trigger guard with an inscribed "DW", meaning unknown, possibly initials. CONDITION: Very good, metal with attractive even freckling, cock with a few very minor chips at the base. Wood is very good, full sized, with a few bumps and bruises acquired over time. Action works appropriately, bore is excellent, with smooth oxidation throughout. Original flint lock stamped in center with a large "(CROWN) / GR" and stamped "KETLAND & Co" at tail. Original iron ramrod retained by a single reinforced ferrule. Standard brass Heavy Dragoon pattern furniture. Stock stamped "DE" behind sideplate. CONDITION: Very good. Metal mostly bright with some light freckling throughout mixed with a darker areas of patina. Markings are crisp with one casting flaw through Ketland. Wood is very good with some scattered marks from use, with one chip missing at front of lock, and repaired split on left side running from front of ramrod channel to approximately half way up the barrel. Indistinct stampings on left side of stock behind sideplate and offset at wrist. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has been cleaned to a bright steel over old oxidation. Wood stocks are very good with some normal marks and wear on left side, one piece of wood lifting on right side near buttplate. One masterful splice repair at ramrod channel mouth. Both pistols with 11 - 3/4" octagon to round barrels seperated by a wedding band, plain steel locks with "C.O." on interiors. Slender dark European dense wood stocks with relief carving of a monster (Chimera?) at ramrod entrance. Flared buttcap. Dense dark wood ramrods, possibly the original, with steel tip decorated with facets. Faceted floral patterned steel furniture including ramrod ferrules, trigger guard, trigger, buttcap, tang finials, lock finials, and reverse of one lock screw. CONDITION: Very good, barrels have been polished over some old minor oxidation, with some age related staining. One lock screw faceted piece possibly a replacement. Stocks are very good, with some bumps and bruises; one pistol has a small scrape at butt, missing a very small sliver along right side of forearm, and has two tight cracks along right side, one at buttcap to wrist and one from lock finial to wedding band, and one small chip at one ramrod ferrule; other with small chip at butt and two tight cracks at butt, two small cracks above trigger guard, one minor crack at forearm, and one crack from behind reverse lock screw to barrel. One action will hold on cock but trigger will not release the cock, other tumbler has worn down and infrequently catches. Bores are very good with a few spots of oxidation. Manufactured for the U.S. Historical Society to commemorate the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, which used a pair of Wogdon pistols. Both pistols are identical with small blade front sights, notch rear sights, brass forearms with ferrule for retaining steel ramrod. English push on safeties, finger grip trigger guards, and butts checkered throughout. Locks signed Wogdon, "Wogdon London" on top strap. Both with conspicuous "000A" and "000B" serial numbers on right sides of barrels. Lightly engraved at barrel breech. Plaque in lid reads "Doyle M. Brimberry", likely a previous owner. CONDITION: Very fine, showing only light evidence of handling and operation throughout their existence. Pans with some striking marks on face, and a few spots of age related staining. checkering is still quite sharp on both pistols. Actions work appropriately when gently operated by hand, bores are excellent. Comes in a blue velvet lined case with two extra compartments for shooting accessories, currently filled with an extra trigger mechanism. Case is fine. Gun (A) is a beautiful little gun with silver wire work on the grip. Engraved in an arc on the underside of the barrel "Dieu donne Malherbe/ a liege". Folding trigger. Housed in what appears to be a period case with all the accessories. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina. Markings are clear but show wear. Grip is very good showing some wear, with all the wire inlay present. Good mechanical function. Case is solid with some minor cracks, missing what appears to be either lead or steel inlay around the edges of the lid. Gun (B) is a pair of British pistols made by Twigg in London. Folding triggers with sliding safeties. CONDITION: Have been lightly cleaned with areas of some very minor pitting. All markings are clear. Wood grips have some light dings and handling marks. One of the top jaw and screw is a more modern but proper replacement. Popular amongst British officers and big game hunters in India, these distinct double barrel pistols were often the last line of defense for someone whose hunt had gone drastically wrong. Both pistols are in identical configuration and were likely manufactured as a pair, although there is no numbering on them. Small bead front sights with no rear sights, bayonet lugs present on both pistols but only pistol (B) retains bayonet and brass tipped ramrod. Waterproof pans, roller bearing frizzens, tailed pan covers, swan neck cocks, and push on safeties on stepped locks. Bayonet releases in front of triggers. Ramrod channels with pineapple finials. Grips with point pattern checkering throughout. Trigger guard with stand of arms, locks with stand of arms at rear and sunburst around retaining screw and distinctly signed Mortimer. Cocks engraved with florals and border engraved filed edges. Right hammer on pistol (A) a replacement. CONDITION: Good as carefully rehabilitated. Barrels have been cleaned over old extensive oxidation. Locks are relatively clean with a few spots of age related staining and old inactive oxidation. Actions work appropriately, right safeties of both pistols are frozen. Bayonet of pistol (B) has detached from barrels. Stocks are very good with an old sanding and layer of varnish. Bores are very good with some even oxidation throughout. Bayonet lug of pistol (A) was repaired at one point with epoxy or equivalent, while same repair on (B) was executed with solder, resulting in rib separation and oxidation to ramrod channel. An unusual pair of Howdah pistols with bayonets intended for if the owner was a poor shot. Vacant hole through the front of the muzzle where bead sight would have sat. Ramrod, likely the original, with brass tip and tail. Barrel retained by a single key. Roller bearing frizzen, with swan neck cock. Lock decorated with rays around pan, and simple geometrics at tail and neck of cock. Vacant silver thumbpiece. Trigger guard decorated with florals and gemetrics. Skipline checkered bag grip. CONDITION: Good. Metal has been cleaned to a bright appearance over some old oxidation with a few deeper areas at barrel tang and left side of muzzle. Tail of lock was hit at one point and is now tipped up. Wood is very good with scattered bumps and bruises, left side has a large pressure mark and tooth marks from a clamp. English push on safeties, finger grip trigger guards, and butts checkered throughout. Locks signed Wogdon, "Wogdon London" on top strap. Lightly engraved at barrel breech. Octagonal flat engraved over the breech "Fabricado / In Iylar (?) / Ano 1843" with florals and fancy script. Scalloped notch rear sight at tang. Underside of bell with a lug, vacant. Vacant ramrod channel with reinforced ferrule at mouth. Lock with engraved floral at tail. Stock with two panels of point pattern checkering at wrist, with flowing lines of cheekpiece and hump at toe. Iron buttplate. CONDITION: Fair to good. Brass has acquired an attractive mustard patina, engraving is clear. Iron is patinated throughout in a rich chocolate patina. Wood has numerous bumps and bruises throughout, and one live split at left side, running from sideplate to tip of forearm throughout retaining escutcheon. There is a splash of what appears to be green paint at toe. Action works appropriately, although frizzen spring is bent and does not contact pan cover and touch hole is plugged. Bore is good, smooth, with some verdigris throughout. (B) Diminutive bead front sight with raised central rib, disappearing at breech for engraving of florals. Slightly raised dais at tang. Lock with geometric designs and signed "Mousullu". Sideplate pierced through with florals. Thin ramrod retained by a reinforced brass ferrule. Trigger guard and cruciform buttcap also made of brass, buttcap with finial decorated in florals. Thumbpiece relief carved with florals. Stock relief carved with florals and geometrics throughout. CONDITION: Very good. Metal with even freckling and a few deeper areas of patination. Approximately 3/5 of the forearm has been replaced, reinforced, and retained by the aforementioned strap. Two stage octagonal to round barrel with small silver inlays of geometrics and a cross at breech, wedding band separation between stages, which is further decorated with florals. Swamped barrel. Barrel tang decorated with shell motif and geometric. Patilla style miquelet lock with long frizzen spring and both half and full cock positions, decorated throughout with florals. Ramrod, likely a replacement, retained by a single brass ferrule and a brass ramrod mouth decorated en suite. Relief carved stock en suite. Brass trigger guard, butt and straps, and sideplate decorated en suite, with silver plaque inlays depicting busts. CONDITION: Very good. Metal essentially dove grey mixing with old oxidation. Frizzen spring has been replaced with a contemporary iteration. Silver has tarnished evenly, brass with an attractive mellow mustard patina. Lock signed "STANTON" in center. Swan neck cock. Brass tipped ramrod retained by single reinforced ferrule with turning. Brass sideplate, trigger guard, and butt with decorated stirrups. Stock crafted en suite with sheath. Some flashes of gilding are visible in protected areas. Original flint lock decorated with florals. Barrel with Islamic touch marks offset over breech. and decorations that are obscured by old patina. CONDITION: Very good. Silver has tarnished throughout with a few areas of clearer silver, gilding largely faded except for in protected and inset areas. Lock and barrel are a deep chocolate patina throughout. Thaddaus (Also referenced as Thaddeus) Poltz is recorded as working in Karlovy Vary, a town in western Bohemia, between 1763-1788. Two stage barrel with double wedding bands at the girdle. Octagonal stage with delicate flowing gold inlay. Small brass front sight, barrel tang signed "2", denoting that this pistol was manufactured as a pair. Flintlock with beveled edges and decorated with a stand of arms at rear, and a warrior resting on drums with a spear in his hand. Signed "T. Poltz" just under the pan and between the legs of the frizzen. Frizzen filed and attractive scalloped. Pan cover decorated with lines and florals. Replaced swan neck cock decorated with florals. Ramrod, retained by reinforced brass ferrules, with entry ferrule relief engraved with florals. Wood relief carved throughout with shell and floral motifs. Brass trigger guard with long tang decorated with a soldier on a horse blowing a horn and wearing a tricorne hat, finial with florals and shell motifs. Vacant thumbpiece made of brass and decorated with a stand of arms and topped by a morion. Barrel tang relief carved en suite with rest of wood. Sideplate with two retaining screws depicting a pair of tricorned soldiers on horses and mortar. Flattened and flared butt depicting two more tricorned soldiers firing pistols at each other from horses on one side, opposite side depicting the soldier on the left falling off his horse after being shot. Slightly upraised buttcap with floral. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has been cleaned in the European fashion over old oxidation, leaving spotting throughout. Engraving is crisp and attractive. One chip is missing out of the bottom of the pan. Wood has been sanded and revarnished, leaving it shy to metal but still crisp. One piece of wood is missing behind the lock. Wood has other pressure marks throughout but otherwise free of cracks. Much of the gold inlay at barrel has lifted. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is excellent, smooth, with less oxidation than normally seen. Two strong US Military inspectors cartouches are very evident on left side of stock with barrel being inspected "JH" "P" . Stirrup retained rammer. One of the very last martial flintlock pistols produced for the United States Military. CONDITION: Very good as earlier refinished. The bore is fine and the lock operates properly. The stock is very good with no cracking or material losses. The stirrup rammer retainer is a contemporary replacement. Very attractive overall. Bonafi" with water proof pan, tailed pan cover, and light scroll engraving. Swan neck cock with scroll and border geometrics. Topjaw and screw possibly replaced. Brass thumbpiece with another silhouette bust surrounded by florals. Steel ramrod with jag, likely the original, retained by turned bronze ferrule, with entrance having a brass floral finial. Trigger guard with a third silhouette bust and floral finials en suite with ramrod channel. Stock with one brass band near forend, possibly as a period repair for a crack that runs along from tip into ramrod channel. Incised carving throughout stock with waves.
