There is a round piercing about 3/8" from the cutting edge in the center of the blade. LARGE 19TH CENTURY STYLE PERCUSSION CANNON WITH ACCESSORIES.

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 18 of 394)

This is a large modern made - although very old - steel tube cannon in the style of popular 19th Century cannons of the pre-1860 era. Its tube is 40" long and the bore diameter is 2-5/16". The firing mechanism utilizes a percussion cap ignition system with a hammer-type striker. Once the cannon is muzzle loaded, one places a percussion cap on the nipple and then pulls the lanyard while standing on the right side of the cannon next to the wheel. This compresses a spring and the release of the lanyard allows the striker to hit the percussion cap with force to detonate the cap. Hardwood rammer, and pike handle with steel worm are included accessories. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish of metal parts is good with brown patina and scale. Metal tires of wheels in good serviceable condition. Smooth bore is dark with light pitting. Wood of carriage is strong and serviceable with some cracks to the hubs from weathering. Metal hardware very good with over 80% enamel paint coverage, with brown patina in places. Steel carriage bolts exposed at center of carriage under tube. This is an over-sized item and will require third party shipping. This would be an impressive piece at any range or fourth of July event. JWK This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: Dimensions: 46" x 92" x 60".
This is a large modern made - although very old - steel tube cannon in the style of popular 19th Century cannons of the pre-1860 era. Its tube is 40" long and the bore di...moreameter is 2-5/16".

SWORD CANE WITH 17TH CENTURY PASSAU-WOLF MARKED RAPIER BLADE

Lot # 1020 (Sale Order: 20 of 394)

Using a 17th century rapier blade, this sword cane likely represents the use of a family or ancestral blade by a descendant in the early to mid-1800s, when a gentleman no longer went out obviously armed, but still felt obligated to carry a weapon. The cane body/scabbard and handle are wood. The handle curves down and narrows gradually to a point, imitating an animal's horn and pointing to an owner's status as a sportsman. At the base of the grip, a darker wood ferrule is inlaid with small bone disks bearing a dark ring and center eye. A spring catch secures the handle and body. The cane body is spiral bound in black leather producing a ridge and channel effect. There may have been a separately applied collar at the throat, perhaps with an owner's name, only a narrow paper wrapping remains, probably to give it a tighter fit. The blade is straight, double edged, and six sided in cross section with the central flat on each side shallowly channeled in the upper portion. Further down on both sides four short, sunken rectangular cartouches are placed on the central flat at the lower mid-point of the blade. No interior markings are visible in them They may have been blank and intended only to lighten and stiffen the blade. The upper blade, however, clearly shows a blade smith's running wolf mark on either side. Usually associated with the city of Passau, the wolf is rendered in cursory straight lines still retaining some gold-colored inlay. The form of the mark and the configuration of the blade suggest it came from an early 17th century rapier prized for its use of quality German steel. This is an interesting sword cane that repays study. CONDITION: Very good. The blade has a smooth surface, dull silver mixed with some thin gray in color. the edge is good and the markings distinct. The handle shows some handling marks and wear to the painted surface. The only fault to the blade is a very small portion of the tip that is bent. SR Blade Length: 32 - 1/4" Overall Length: 37 - 3/4" Condition: Dimensions: Length: 37 - 3/4".
