Missouri Indian War Axe Tomahawk c. 1780-1820

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 734)

Available for sale is this extraordinary “Missouri War Axe” war clubs from circa 1780-1820. The tomahawk war club originated from the Native American Indian tribes along ...morethe upper Missouri River including the Osage, Otoe, Quapaw, Mandan, Hidatsa and in some cases Pawnee. This example is thought to originate from the Mandan Hidatsa American Indians from the late 18th century to early 19th century. This rare example is one of only a few authentic examples which bear the original blacksmith hallmark on the blade, a truly fine addition. The right side of the blade shows a round heavy stamping in the forged iron wide triangular-shaped heavy head along with being cut into the iron, “MJC”. The traditional Missouri War Axe tomahawk head flows into the nice large size eyelet hole with slight step almost as if a rear spur was supposed to be present. The head is secured, loosely onto the original hardwood haft handle which is artfully hand hewn and carved. The haft shows a wide top which is carved with a step ring about two and half inches from the bottom of the eyelet hole and holds nine solid brass square shank early trade tacks. Below the eyelet hole the handle is strip hewn with a slightly octagonal feel to the surface. Explorer Karl Bodmer documented early examples of this style of war club in his paintings published in the McKinney & Hall books such as Bodmer’s 1834 painting of Minnetare Chief Addih-Hiddish holding his Missouri War Axe. The term "Missouri War Axe" was coined by American Indian weapons collectors to describe this particular style of tomahawk. They were first discovered by Lewis & Clark on their 1804-1805 expedition financed by Thomas Jefferson, which sent them exploring up the upper Missouri River basin. Meriwether Lewis wrote about these weapons and sketched one in his journal, stating that the local Indians were fervently requesting the expedition blacksmith to make additional examples for them. He went as far as to state that it was the only item the Indians were willing to trade corn, grain and other expedition necessities for and that manufacture and trade of additional axes is what solely got the explorers through the winter of 1805. The old hardwood haft has a nice mellow patina from much age and use with a particular dark coloring near the gripping area, consistent with use. Closer examination of the tomahawk axe head shows signs of blacksmith forge folds, voids and hammer marks along with heavy wear, pitting and corrosion with a nice mellow coloring from honest age. The hallmark or makers mark on the blade shows a clear round circle pressed deep into the iron with an “A” or arrow head at the center with cross hatching at the outside edges, which could possibly be letters and is accompanied by the MJC letters. Some of the documented blacksmith makers of Missouri War Axes include St. Louis blacksmith Henri Papin, Dunlop & Fleur, Holtzappfel & Co. England (makers mark British Ordnance mark of the broad arrow and letters BO). Measures overall 20.5"L with a axe head that is 8 5/8"L by 4 1/8" across the edge of the blade. Southern Plains Pipe Tomahawk 19th Century

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 734)

The lot features an excellent pipe tomahawk attributed to the Southern Plains Native American Indians and dating to the 19th Century. The piece shows a high craftsmanship...more iron axe head with pipe bowl showing a typical flaring small head with small rear facing spur and file groves along the eyelet hole. The head is secured to the haft with a gasket of Indian tanned hide which is still present, a rare fine addition. The bowl itself shows two heavy filed groves along the curved tall bowl which was forged from an old heavy rifle barrel, the cut rifling is still visibly present in the bowl itself. The haft handle is hardwood showing a nice curved finish with three deeply carved rings which end at the gripping area. The end of the pipe shows a hand stop raised area holding a pierced hole which would have held a drop of beadwork or feathers. The entire wood haft has a nice shiny mellow patina from much honest age and use. The head itself has a nice chocolate brown patina from honest age and use as well. Provenance: The piece comes with a handwritten letter from Jeremy Peconom, a Maidu American Indian which states that the piece was handed down through generations in his family and was obtained in trade in the Honey Lake Valley of Northern California. The piece was sold by Jeremy Peconom at a Las Vegas, Neveda Gun Show. This is truly a fantastic authentic tomahawk with nice letter from the previous Native family collection showing fine original patina dating to the circa 1870-1880’s. An examination of the eyelet hole shows the original clean out plug hole and the hide gasket. Measures 22.75”L with a head that is 8”L with a 3 1/8”L blade. The current owner of piece noted that the curved long haft lent the piece to being used on horseback.

Blackfoot Bear-Cult Jaw Beaver Back Dag Knife 19th

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 20 of 734)

This is a phenomenal Bear-Cult dag fighting knife of the Blackfoot Native American Indians of the 18th Century. This example shows a traditional shaped blade in the beave...morer tail or beaver back shape double edged which is secured to a wood bolster handguard with four copper stud pins on each side. The solid wood handle also has the beaver back or beaver tail design. The handle continues with a Bear bone jaw with teeth which is wrapped in red stroud old trade clothe being sinew sewn and secured presumably with hide glue. At the back of the knife near the end shows a tuft of bear fur / hide which is still attached. The end of the knife shows the two main front large canines / teeth turning toward the inside, a truly menacing pommel. The knife blade itself appears to have had a medium ridge which was worked of grinded out. Th blade has pitting and a dark coloring and is not marked but is a good blacksmith example. This example is nearly the same as the Bear-Cult Dag shown in Harold L. Peterson’s “American Knives” on page 127 figure 158. Peterson’s example shows the bear jaw with small tuft of fur at the back, being wrapped at the gripping area with beaver back wood two-piece bolsters having four pins and a bear back tail shaped blade. The bear knife was used by the members of the Bear Cult among the Assiniboine, Eastern Dakota, Blackfoot and Sarsi tribes. These knives were sacred and used during hand to hand combat in battle. Obtaining a Bear-Cult dag knife was difficult. The knife was transferred in a ritual ceremony, per Harold Peterson’s report, and as the ceremony was coming to a close the owner of the knife, after imitating the antics of a bear, would suddenly hurl the knife at the candidate. If he failed to catch the knife, he was not worthy of the knife, but if he caught it he was thrown naked upon a bed of thorns and beaten thoroughly with the flat of the blade while the ceremonial Bear-Cult paint was applied to his aching body (openly quoted from “American Knives”). Measures overall 15”L with a 8.25”L blade that is 2.5”W at its widest. The knife itself is about 3”W.
