All-cloth doll depicting an infant child, having pressed and oil-painted facial features and short brown curly hair, brown shaded eyes, black upper eyeliner, closed mouth with defined space between the lips, attached to stockinette body with stitch-jointed arms, mitten hands, separate thumb in a manner to suggest a loose-limbed baby, antique costume. Wonderful Early Cloth and Beaded Doll in Early Trunk with Provenance Notes 800/1000

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 378)      

4" (10 cm.) A homespun cloth doll with finely stitched facial features and carved wooden hands is entirely costumed in attached costume made of tightly-woven tiny beads in a design to simulate fabric pattern, with beaded "stockings" and little beaded heeled shoes. The doll is preserved in an early wooden truck with paper cover in a floral design. Condition: good, face darkened, some general age wear. Comments: an attached old ink script note reads "Charles II doll of beads and wood...Miss De Witt C. (indecipherable), Nov 27,"45", presumably the date that the doll was donated to the Museum; a similar note is attached to the doll trunk suggesting that the trunk has been the constant home of the doll for several centuries. Note: Charles II ruled England from 1630-1685. Value Points: a wonderful early mystery doll with intriguing historical clues....more
