American Naval Officer?s Belt, ca. 1880

Lot # 1003 (Sale Order: 4 of 690)      

Belt is constructed of black Moroccan leather, approx. 42" in length.ÿ Gildedÿ brass buckle hardware is in the motif of an eagle clutching and anchor over cannon balls, surmounted by 13 stars, with a border of acorns and oakleaves.ÿ Buckle clasp is also relief cast and gilded.

Condition: Good to very good. Buckle and clasp remain excellent with 90% gilt remaining to heavy brass buckle. Moroccan leather, although whole and complete and showing no fraying, has lost a considerable amount of its stitching, but still shows and displays extremely well.

Framed Engraving and Autograph of U.S. Grant, with Two Volume "Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant"

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 5 of 690)      

Grant's memoirs 1885 edition (Vol. I) and 1886 edition (Vol. II), published by Charles L. Webster & Co., rebound in tan cloth with silver and red imprint on spines. Print matted within oval, measuring approx. 4-1/4"- x 5-3/4", the autograph matted to match, measuring approx. 4"- x 1-3/8": "U.S. Grant." Frame measuring 11-3/4"- x 16-3/4-".

Condition: Memoirs modern rebinding, with name of owner imprinted inside front endpaper of both volumes. Paper fading, some pages loose, some cracking at hinge due to age. Framed print and autograph fine.

15" steel tube with 3/4" bore and flared muzzle, with touch hole. Mounted on hardwood carriage with steel trunnion caps. Dished hardwood 11-1/2" diameter wheels, steel axle and rims. Hinged, steel storage boxes mounted to axle. Trail has metal mounts for ramrods. Wood hand spike and metal lunette. 28" overall length. Sold together with two ramrods. A well-executed scale model.

Condition: Fine. Age wear and patina. One ramrod ring broken and in storage box on gun.

Finely Formed and Made Steel Combination Spanner Wrench for Wheelock

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 690)      

5-1/4" overall length, with two apertures in octagonal T-head for cocking action, one at each end. Finely formed eight-sided shaft to handle, with ring mount eyelet. The gracefully formed shaft constricting at bottom, and then terminating in butt with neatly faceted small turn screw.

Condition: Very good. Gray patina with pitting and marks. Apertures and turn screw show marks from use.

Fine 17th Century Saxon Wheelock Short Rifle

Lot # 1011 (Sale Order: 12 of 690)      

.51 cal., 20-1/4" octagonal barrel, breech marked "16*68", and on either side "IW".ÿ Unmarked Wheelock action.ÿ Walnut stock profusely inlaid with game scenes, maidens, mythological creatures and rural scenes done in bone ivory and mother of pearl.ÿ Sliding patchbox is present and functions.ÿ Ramrod appears to be an old replacement.

Condition: Good to very good. Metal appears lightly cleaned and shows a smooth gray patina. Stock has cracks and losses with minor losses to inlays. One of the larger rural scene panels is pulling away.

Unserialized. Approx. .32 caliber. 33" octagonal barrel, tip-up breech, adjustable target sight. Provision for tang-mounted peep sight. 20" brass-tipped hardwood cleaning rod retained with 3 brass fittings. Figured walnut stock with cheekpiece and brass hardware. Finely checkered buttstock and forearm. Modified Scheutzen butt. Winding mechanism in stock. Double-set triggers. Top of breech with maker's name: Anton Baumann in Munchen

Condition: Fine to excellent. Barrel retaining approximately 85-90% blued finish now plum brown. Front sight absent. Brass with mellow age patina. Stock fine retaining approximately 80-85% varnish. Numerous dents in wood. Three inch patch of scarring to right side of forearm. Front sight absent. Bore is mirror bright.

The Queen, Goldsmith & Crown Jewelers, Garrard & Co. Ltd., 112 Regent Street, W.I.??ÿ Case is bound in burgundy-colored Moroccan leather, lid is lined in white satin, made between 1852-1865.

Condition: Excellent. Showing slight tarnish to the silver and very little handling. Case remains in excellent condition as well.

Condition: Very good. Barrel retaining approximately 20-30% finish, the remainder with grey patina and minor pitting. Frame retaining approximately 90-95% finish with minor dents and marks present. Grips very good with minor wear and marks. Action very good.

Seaver Derringer, Recovered from the Sight of the Alamo

Lot # 1015 (Sale Order: 16 of 690)      

No serial number visible, approx. .44 cal. ball, 3-1/2" barrel.ÿ Found in the approximate location of the northern corner of the original Alamo perimeter, with documentation and notarized statement by the grandson of a carpenter who helped with the excavation.ÿ This pistol was at one time on display at the Alamo and comes with notarized affidavit and a letter from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who are the custodians of the Alamo, acknowledging the return of the pistol after a period on display.

Condition: Poor as in near relic condition, but still retaining German silver triggerguard, shield-type escutcheon on backstrap and fore-end tip, all in very good condition. Action functions. The uppermost part of the stock behind the hammer is missing exposing the lockwork, and pistol shows heavy rusting to iron parts.

Serial no. 1024, .32 extra short RF cal., 7-shot, 1-5/8" round barrel, mother-of-pearl sideplates and nickel-plated squeezer handle. This example is a rare one of only 1000 made without grip pads. Nickel-plated finish; standard markings. Sold together with one .32 rimfire cartridge mounted in foam and cardboard display.

Condition: Fine to excellent. Retaining approx. 90-95% original nickel. Scattered spotting. Right grip panel with crack. Left panel with chip.

Condition: Very good. Showing approx. 70% of an arsenal refinish. Grips show moderate to heavy finish with slight repairs. Action remains tight, bore is good.

Perrin Double Action Cartridge Revolver

Serial no. 980, .44 cal., 6" barrel, in the white, walnut grips.ÿ Marked ?Perrin? and ?Paris?.ÿ Imported from Europe in the 1860?s by blockade runners, Perrins were often found in use by Confederate officers during the Civil War.

Condition: Very good. Showing light pitting overall. Tight action, very good bore. Grips show darkening from oil with light dings and scratches from use, but otherwise fine. Screws remain largely unmolested.

Condition: Good to very good. Retaining approx. 20-30% of its original brilliant fire blue finish. Horn grips show moderate wear from use but are otherwise crack free and in good condition. All screw slots are straight and true.

19th Century French made Bulldog Style Double Action Folding Trigger Revolver

Lot # 1021 (Sale Order: 22 of 690)      

.30 cal., 1-1/2? barrel, nickel finish, ivory grips, lightly and finely foliate engraved.ÿ With coin-edge front rim to cylinder, as well as a two-position thumb-lever safety on left side of frame. ÿCarried by bicyclists in the early days of cycling to ward off wild dog attacks.ÿ

Condition: Very good to fine. Showing light flaking of original nickel finish, but mainly to backstrap and top 2/3s of barrel. Ivory grips show fractional shrinkage, but otherwise fine with lots of character. This revolver would benefit from a light cleaning. Very nice and seldom seen adorned.

Unmarked European Early 19th Century Flintlock Pistol, Probably for Middle Eastern Market

Unserialized, approx. .50 cal., 14-1/4" barrel, silver inlays in reliefÿof vine and leaf form, barrel rib with silver inlay engraved with wave pattern terminating with crown finial. Hammer and lock with cloverleaf pattern engraved overlay, engraved triggerguard and buttcap, panoply of arms sideplate. Nicely carved European walnut stock with silver wire inlays of stem and flower form, hardwood ramrod held in silver furniture.

Condition: Fine. Age patina to barrel and inlays. Light frosting to frizzen and spring. Light soiling to wrist. A well-preserved example of early 19th Century European sidearms.

Pair of French Flintlock Pistols, marked ?Lanotte A?Aine?

Approx. .38 cal., gold-washed frames, carved eaglehead butts, with light floral motifs to top of stocks, as well as screw-in barrels with finial motif triggerguards.ÿ Both pistols feature unique hammer safeties for carrying in a cocked position.

Condition: Good. Showing moderate wear overall. Eaglehead motif details remain remarkably good for pistols dating from the 18th Century. One pistol is missing a screw from the lock retainer plate.

British Flintlock Sea Service Pistol, by Tower

Lot # 1024 (Sale Order: 25 of 690)      

No serial number visible, .56 cal., lock is slightly beveled and marked "Tower" laterally behind the cock, with large Georgian crown over "GR" between cock and frizzen; below frizzen is a small crown above the numeral "2".ÿ Barrel is marked with early London proof and crown over "GR", with 8" belt hook which is crown marked.ÿ Brass buttcap, triggerguard and ramrod retainer are present.ÿ Triggerguard shows finial motif at forward end.ÿ

Condition: Very good to excellent. Showing little wear to metal parts and very light pitting near cockscrew. Markings are clear. Stock shows light scuffs and slight losses but no cracks. Shows possible addition of linseed oil at a later date. A nice example of a British Sea Service pistol dating from the time of the Battle of Trafalgar.
