Rare Confederate D-Guard Bowie Knife by Schneider & Glassick, Memphis, Tenn. c. 1861

Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 690)

17" curved blade, the ricasso marked: Schneider/Glassick. The reverse: C.S.A. Wrought iron "D" guard with recurved top quillon. One-piece circular walnut grip with six lathed ribs. Brass ferrules. No scabbard. According to the consignor, this knife was purchased in 1968 from noted gun and knife collector Cecil Godman of Memphis, Tennessee. It was exhibited at the Tennessee Knives & Guns, June. 1968. An accompanying framed photo of this exhibit together with a letter from the Tennessee Gun Collectors Asso. dated October, 1966 to Mr. Godman, a post card from a Texas Gun Shop and a copy of an old Civil War era Schneider & Glassick advertisement.

The firm of Schneider & Glassick was founded by William Schneider and Frederick Glassick and first appears in the Memphis city directory in 1860. Prior to this date, the two manufactured revolvers in their separate independent firms. They formed a partnership in the late 1850s and began making revolvers under the name of Schneider & Glassick. Their primary revolver was very similar in design to the famous Colt 1851 Navy revolver. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Schneider & Glassick began to produce weapons for the Confederate government at their Memphis location until 1862 when the city was taken over by federal troops. During the time of operation, the firm made approximately 20-50 revolvers and numerous "D" guard bowie knives. They are considered among the rarest of the known bowies manufactured under order by the Confederate government. This example is one of the finest in existence.

Condition: Excellent for this type of item. Blade with light wear and grey patina. Minor evidence of sharpening and micro nicks in edge. Grip and guard excellent with light wear overall.

McHenry, Baltimore which served with distinction in the Mexican War, and to whom were issued 1000 Colt Walkerÿrevolvers. The knives association with the Colt Walker has given them added collector status over other martial knives of the period.ÿ
