Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 690)
The firm of Schneider & Glassick was founded by William Schneider and Frederick Glassick and first appears in the Memphis city directory in 1860. Prior to this date, the two manufactured revolvers in their separate independent firms. They formed a partnership in the late 1850s and began making revolvers under the name of Schneider & Glassick. Their primary revolver was very similar in design to the famous Colt 1851 Navy revolver. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Schneider & Glassick began to produce weapons for the Confederate government at their Memphis location until 1862 when the city was taken over by federal troops. During the time of operation, the firm made approximately 20-50 revolvers and numerous "D" guard bowie knives. They are considered among the rarest of the known bowies manufactured under order by the Confederate government. This example is one of the finest in existence.
