***Auction Highlight*** 1921 Missouri Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms64 By SEGS (fc)

Lot # 154 (Sale Order: 135 of 720)

***Auction Highlight*** 1921 Missouri Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms64 By SEGS. The Obverse Depicts Daniel Boone, even though he was best known for his exploits in...more Kentucky, since he made his home in Missouri for the last quarter of his life. When examining a Missouri Centennial for wear, on the obverse, friction first shows on Boone's cheek and on the hair behind his ear and shoulder. On the reverse, rub is first evident on the arm of the frontiersman. Scarce and very rare commemorative. The Missouri Centennial Half Dollar was authorized to mark the 100th anniversary of the admission of Missouri to the Union. It represented an interesting commemorative issue since it was minted in two different varieties, a tactic that would be repeated for some subsequent coins.Authorization called for production of up to 250,000 of the silver half dollars. The coins would be released at the Missouri Centennial Exposition and State Fair held in August 1921 at the state capital Sedalia. The original cost was $1 per coin with distribution through the Sedalia Trust Company. At the request of the Chairman of the exposition, a certain number of 1921 Missouri Centennial Half Dollars were minted with “2*4” (2 Star 4) on the obverse to signify admission as the 24th state in the Union. He requested that the first 5,000 pieces carrying special marking, which be believed would make the coins more marketable. Research suggests that 10,000 pieces were struck with the marking. The obverse design of the Missouri Centennial Half Dollar features a bust of Daniel Boone, wearing his well known coon-skin cap. The reverse design features a scene of Daniel Boone standing with a Native American against a background of stars. Boone holds a power horn and rifle and points westward. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken, a medalist and sculptor who had previously designed the 1915 Panama Pacific $50 Gold Piece. The final mintages for the 1921 Missouri Half Dollar net of melting is estimated to be 9,400 of the coins including “2*4” in the field and 11,400 of the coins without the marking. Although intended to be a scarce variety, availability of the “2*4” is only slightly less than the plain version due to the overall low mintage of the issue. When examining a Missouri Centennial for wear, on the obverse, friction first shows on Boone's cheek and on the hair behind his ear and shoulder. On the reverse, rub is first evident on the arm of the frontiersman. Scarce and very rare commemorative.

PCGS US Fractional Currency 10c Third Issue fr-1253 Washington Rare Red Reverse & Hand Signed Graded

Lot # 158 (Sale Order: 139 of 720)

PCGS US Fractional Currency 10c Third Issue fr-1253 Washington Rare Red Reverse & Hand Signed Graded cu63 PPQ By PCGS. Fractional or postage currency has a rich hi...morestory. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

***Auction Highlight*** 1925 Fort Vancouver Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms65+ By SEGS (fc)

Lot # 165 (Sale Order: 146 of 720)

***Auction Highlight*** 1925 Fort Vancouver Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms65+ By SEGS. One of the four different commemorative coins issued during the year w...moreas the 1925 Fort Vancouver Centennial Half Dollar. This coin featured designs by Portland, Oregon artist Sidney Bell, which were modeled by Laura Gardin Fraser. The occasion commemorated was the 100th anniversary of the founding Fort Vancouver, Washington. This outpost had served as a trading center for settlers and Native Americans within the territory. The coins were issued as part of a week long local celebration and sold for $1 each.Dr. John McLoughlin is depicted on the obverse of the coin. He had established Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River in 1825 and later went on to found Oregon City. The reverse of the Fort Vancouver Half Dollar portrays a pioneer holding a musket with the Fort and a mountain peak in the background. Authorized production was set at 300,000, which proved far too optimistic. A quantity of 50,000 coins was struck at the San Francisco Mint (although the coins did not carry the “S” mint mark) and after unsold coins were returned for melting, net distribution was a paltry 14,994 coins.
