Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 26 of 720)

1875 US Fractional Currency 10c Fifth Issue fr-1266 Short Key Graded au58 EPQ By PMG. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Ci...morevil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

1924 Huguenot Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Select Unc

Lot # 58 (Sale Order: 40 of 720)

1924 Huguenot Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Select Unc. Issued to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the settlement of New Netherlands, the 1924 Huguenot Wallo...moreon Tercentenary Half Dollar was the only commemorative coin released for the year. The following year would see the issuance of coins under four different programs, the greatest number to date, although it would later be exceeded. The subject of commemoration was the founding of New Netherlands, now New York, by a group of Dutch colonists in 1624. A church group known as the Huguenot-Walloon New Netherland Commission sought the commemorative coin program, which was eventually approved. There was some controversy about the role of government in creating a fund raiser for a private church group, although the program proceeded. The obverse of the 1924 Huguenot Half Dollar featured portraits of Admiral Coligny and William the Silent. Although they were not involved in the settlement, they were viewed as leaders in the struggle for religious freedom. An image of the New Nederland is shown on the reverse. This is the ship that brought the settlers to the New World. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by George T. Morgan.
