1915-s Panama Pacific Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Unc Details

Lot # 751 (Sale Order: 621 of 720)

1915-s Panama Pacific Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Unc Details. Exceptionally Rare Commemorative. The Pan Pac was Minted Along with 4 Other Coins to Commemorate the...more Completion of the Panama Canal and Distributed at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco which also Celebrated the Renewal of San Francisco since the Great Fire. When Examining the Pan Pac Half Dollar, Note that there is a Problem with Pan-Pac Halves in its Strike: Weakness is often Evident on Columbia’s Head, Cap, Arm and Body, also on the Eagle's Breast Feathers and Claws. Occasionally, Coins are seen with a Rim Indentation Near the Periphery on Each Side; this is a Mint Caused Problem and Should Not Be Factored Into the Grade. When Grading Lightly Circulated Examples, Friction is First Evident on Columbia's Shoulder and on the Eagle's Breast. The 1915 Panama Pacific Half Dollar represented only the second commemorative silver half dollar issued by the United States Mint. Although this would later become the most frequent denomination for classic commemorative coins, the earlier issues took place across a range of denominations. The program of five commemorative coins issued for the Panama Pacific International Exposition included two versions of a $50 gold piece, a gold quarter eagle, and a gold dollar. The half dollar featured the full length figure of the allegorical Columbia with rays of the sun and the Golden Gate in the background. Her arms are outstretched to scatter fruits and flowers. A cherub appears to her right holding a cornucopia. The obverse includes the “S” mint mark, as the coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint facility. The reverse of the Panama Pacific Exposition Half Dollar features an American Eagle with wings outstretched, perched on a shield. An oak branch and olive branch appears to each side to represent strength and peace. The words “In God We Trust” appear near the eagle’s head, representing the motto’s first appearance on a commemorative coin. The obverse of the coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, and the reverse was designed by George T. Morgan. 1918 $2 "Battleship Note" National Currency Federal Reserve Bank of New York, NY FR-751 Grades g de

Lot # 760 (Sale Order: 625 of 720)

1918 $2 "Battleship Note" National Currency Federal Reserve Bank of New York, NY FR-751 Grades g details. Somewhat similar to the language seen on National Bank N...moreotes, the notes themselves were actually backed by bonds deposited with the United States Treasury by the individual Federal Reserve bank. Forever confusing new collectors, the top of these notes read “NATIONAL CURRENCY” but they are not what is referred to as National Bank Notes. Starting off with the main attraction to these interesting banknotes is the design on the back, with its imposing visage of the 27,000-ton USS New York dreadnought battleship. The vignette was never labeled on the note itself and was intended to be generic, but in comparing it to an image of New York it is clear the two are the same. The face of the note has a vignette of third United States President Thomas Jefferson; his first appearance on the Federal $2 bill was on the Series of 1869 Legal Tender, and he can be found there on modern $2 notes to this day.
