H.M. Quackenbush 22 cal rifle Herkimer NY cond good for age has weld repair and cracked stock SN#?

Lot # 726B (Sale Order: 82 of 216)

Owner stated the the rifle still fires fine (very good old repair) Henry Marcus Quackenbush was born in Herkimer, New York on April 27, 1847. As a child he differed from his scholarly brother and sister in that he much preferred to tinker with mechanical components than to read or study. He began an apprenticeship with the gun maker Remington Arms at age 14 where he acquired the skills of an expert metalworker and gunmaker. By 1867, he had begun inventing and marketing devices on his own, including his first successful creation, the extension ladder. He sold the patent for this invention for $500. In 1871, Quackenbush set out to found his own company, establishing the H. M. Quackenbush Co., a metal working and gun shop. He created an air pistol that set him on a path of success when demand for it rose beyond is expectations. He sold the patents for the gun to Pope Brothers of Boston, who managed its manufacture and sale. Subsequently, the H. M. Quackenbush company manufactured numerous products, ranging from rifles and sport firearms to kitchen gadgets and seafood tools. In 1876, Quackenbush designed the very popular .22 caliber Safety Rifle. In the 1880's, he began mass production of "gallery guns" and the Quackenbush name appeared in shooting galleries across the country. One of Quackenbush's most famous and most successful inventions came in 1878, when he created the first nutcracker and nutpick. In 1913, he patented the spring-jointed nutcracker, a nickel-plated, solid steel nutcracker with four picks. Nearly 200 million of these nutcrackers have been sold worldwide since then. The company shipped a record 3.6 million nutcrackers in 1976. The Quackenbush company ceased production of guns in the 1930's, continuing only to make nutpicks and nutcrackers. ...more

antique Burnside rifle Co, rifle cond as scene

Lot # 726C (Sale Order: 83 of 216)

Ambrose Everett Burnside was born in 1824 and graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in 1847, being posted as a Lieutenant of Artillery to Mexico that same year. He arrived too late to see any action, but continued to serve with the Artillery in the newly acquired territories in the Southwestern United States. Official Army documents record that Burnside was wounded in a skirmish with Apaches in 1849, but saw no other action under fire. His last post of duty in the military service was at Ft. Adams, in Newport, R.I. While stationed at Ft. Adams, in July 1853, Lt. Burnside requested permission from the Secretary of War to have the Springfield Armory construct a model of a firearm of his design, obviously for the purpose of satisfying the "working model" requirement of the U.S. Patent Office. With a working model, Burnside established his first company, Burnside & Bishop, which was destroyed by fire in late 1853. With the insurance money, Burnside then formed the Bristol Firearm Company in January 1854. Burnside had recently wed Mary Richmond Bishop of Providence, and his relatives invested heavily in his venture. More importantly, Burnside was able to acquire the services of a respected Massachusetts gunsmith, George P. Foster, during the infancy stage of his corporate development. With Fosters expertise, Bristol Firearms was able to produce locks and other gun components for the trade. These items provided a modest income while Burnside perfected his carbine design. Interestingly, the company stationary of this period shows several back-action locks available from Burnside. Perhaps the greatest contribution that Foster made to the Burnside Carbine was the gain-twist rifling which was used in every model carbine. Even shot-out, pitted barrels perform admirably at 50 yards due to this feature. Burnside received his first patent on his original carbine on March 25, 1856. ...more

RARE Boxer rebellion China beheading sword cond well used nicks on blade

Lot # 727 (Sale Order: 84 of 216)

Taiyuan At the end of June 1900, the Boxers followed orders and set fire to houses and churches, killing Christians and foreigners. The missionaries from the town of Taiyuan fled from their burning buildings, and gathered together at a co-worker's house. Three days later, four deputies, sent by the Governor, arrived with a band of soldiers, promising to escort them in safety to the coast. But when the deputies finished speaking, the soldiers seized the missionaries, and took them to a house near the Governor’s residence. Here they were kept until 9 July. On that day they were taken to the open space in front of the Governor’s residence, and stripped to the waist, as usual with those beheaded. The group of eight missionaries, along with their other colleagues, died there for their faith. Xinzho Meanwhile, in Xinzhou, the small group of missionaries, not knowing what was going on in Taiyuan, decided that they must leave the town immediately. The group set out, in carts and on horseback, for the hills to the west. In the night they reached a village, where there were a few Christian families. But it was soon clear that their presence in the village was endangering the people, and the missionaries fled to seek shelter in a mountain cave. The cave they were hiding in turned out to be a dark, damp hovel, with no water easily accessible. The food had by this time run out, and they were entirely dependent on villagers bringing them supplies. The Boxers meantime sought to harass them by every means, and finally conspired to starve them out. On 20 July they heard that the Boxers were drilling and plotting their attack. The situation grew worse every day but the missionaries still hoped that they might be rescued. But that rescue never reached them, although they had succeeded in eluding capture and evading death for over twenty days. Imperial troops arrived and, promising them protection, lured them back to the city of Xinzhou....more
