SMALL SIGNED SILVER MOUNTED PERCUSSION KENTUCKY

Lot # 3399 (Sale Order: 401 of 634)

PISTOL. Cal. 40. NSN. 8.5" Overall, 4.5" oct. to rnd. bbl. w/ wedding ring transition & small silver blade front sight. Signature is in fancy script & difficult to read but possibly “J + Alderderfer”. There is 1836 fullstock rifle signed by him which I do not have a photograph to compare. Frank Klay who sold this pistol in 1963 transcribed as “J. Richesbayer” & his letter accompanies. Regardless, this is a cute little late Kentucky pistol w/ engraved silver triggerguard & flat butt cap. Early percussion lock w/ slightly rebated tail, sparse engraving en suite w/ hammer. Grip has short wood extension attached w/ central screw which is covered w/ engraved silver ferrule & silver butt cap attached w/ 9 tiny screws & pins, this is somewhat unique construction. Silver triggerguard terminates to nicely engraved pineapple finial, silver ramrod pipes, horn nose cap. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Frank Clay letter 1963 describing this pistol when he was selling it. CONDITION: very good overall. Lock & bbl. have mostly smooth dark iron patina. Stock is well fit w/ nice striped grain. Ramrod appears to be a modern edition w/ plastic tip. Silver butt cap missing 4 of its 9 tiny screws. Mechanically fine w/ good rifled bore. (01-19980/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-2,500.

VERY RARE AND FINE JACOB ALBRIGHT ATTRIBUTED

Lot # 3407 (Sale Order: 409 of 634)

SWIVEL BREECH FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 42. NSN. Bbl. 39". Though unsigned, this rifle is easily attributed & has nearly identical patchbox as shown in Kindig page 192 on signed Jacob Albright rifle, who worked in Northumberland County, circa 1800. This swivel breech rifle also has the prominent Roman nose butt stock comb seen on Kindig rifle and typical of the Bethlehem school. This rifle shows same engraving style on Kindig patchbox but more elaborate. There is little doubt both guns are by the same maker. Thank you, Steve Hench, for instantly identifying patchbox as Albright. Swivel breech flintlock rifles of the Golden age by any maker are extremely rare as noted by copy of 1964 Joe Kindig letter linked here & this is the only attributed Albright we are aware. 39” Oct. bbls. which are rotated by pulling forward section of 2 piece triggerguard which releases & locks mechanism, silver inset front sights, inset carved notch rear sights. Lock & hammer engraved en suite as is breech, mounted on beautiful tiger striped maple. Patchbox has 9 piercings, 8 silver inlays including engraved silver eagle above cheekpiece. Below cheekpiece is engraved brass vent pick holder, 8” border engraved toe plate. Original wood ramrod has threaded iron tip. This is a beautiful Bethlehem school rifle, w/ few known swivel breeches by any maker fresh to market from local estate. CONDITION: fine overall, appears original in every regard w/ no apparent restoration, bbls. & lock have smooth dark iron patina, brass was cleaned a long time ago, now w/ light mustard patina. Patchbox lid has discoloration from corrosion around edges & internal latch spring is rusted, patchbox mortise still filled w/ apparent corrosive lubricant. Stock has a hand worn patina w/ some loss of striping on the right side of butt, & a few small scuffs. Mechanically fine including swivel mechanism. Bores have crisp bright rifling, one bbl. has the 6 lands & grooves cut straight w/ no twist, the other w/ twist. ADDITIONAL NOTE: Two major collectors of Abraham Angstadt have informed us that the rifle is NOT Albright but Angstadt. Amazingly that the comparison of patchboxes are virtually identical by both makers. The sideplate & insert silver eagle among other features are again virtually identical to signed Angstadt, pictures Merrill Lindsay's "The Kentucky Rifle". (01-20041/JS). ANTIQUE. $15,000-20,000.

EXTREMELY RARE EARLY GOLDEN AGE JOHN RUPP SIGNED

Lot # 3408 (Sale Order: 410 of 634)

KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 48. NSN. Bbl. 42". Overall length 58 1/2". This rifle is pictured in the 1941 text “Forgotten Heritage; The Story of the People and the Early American Rifle” by Harry Davis. Davis’ text shows very few photographs of guns, but he does show several of the rarest golden age examples. At the time of publication, this was the only example known: “A very narrow wrist which is broader than it is deep. The architecture of this piece is so unusual that connoisseurs and students of the “Kentucky” Rifle who have viewed this piece have been unanimous in their conclusion that there is none other which is quite like the John Rupp. This is the only specimen of his work known to the author. This is without doubt one of the very earliest and most authentic “Kentucky” Rifles in existence.” Indeed, this is a rare survivor that Joe Kindig in his text on golden age Kentucky rifles states “undoubtedly” "made in the pre-revolutionary period". This example is virtually identical to the Kindig gun with profuse incised carving with the carved Indian head forward of trigger guard characteristic of some early Lehigh area makers. Brass mounted with finely engraved two piece figural patch box One difference between Kindig gun and this example is the shape of the sideplate where this example terminates with a figural arrowhead much like that of Herman Rupp. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1st edition 1941 Harry P. Davis "A Forgotten Heritage: The Story of the People & the Early American Rifle". CONDITION: very good overall, this rifle is in exact configuration as found in 1941. There is contemporary crack pinned repair below lock and there is an inset between lock and barrel tang and inset just forward of frizzen between lock and barrel. The delicate thin oval wrist of this gun amazingly has survived unscathed. There is large well patina-overed chip in ramrod channel between front pipes. Stock overall hand-worn patina. Barrel has smooth iron patina with easily discerned signature. Lock has a mottled gray patina with pitting. Mechanically fine with clear, smooth bore. PROVENANCE: Herman Dean collection; William G. Crews; Dr. Howard Engle collection. (01-19968/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.

“OLD KILLDEER” FAMOUS GOLDEN AGE WOLFGANG

Lot # 3409 (Sale Order: 411 of 634)

HAGA FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 50. NSN. Bbl. 44 1/4" oct. Overall length 60 1/2". This is among the most famous of all Kentucky rifles, having an entire chapter dedicated in Captain John Dillin’s pioneering 1924 text “The Kentucky Rifle”. The gun is in remarkable “as found” condition. Dillin states that in 1921 this rifle was used to shoot pigeons, starlings and sparrows at 30-35 yds. fired from offhand position. Dillin was amazed at the accuracy of this well made flintlock rifle & published photos of the targets shot from 100 and 200 yds. The legendary Wolfgang Haga whose rifles are never signed is one of the 4 earliest makers of the Berks County, Womelsdorf school. We know Haga was working there from 1767 into the 1780s and the other 3 makers all sign their guns; Bonewitz, Fichthorn, and Reedy. Joe Kindig, who has written more on Haga than anyone, authenticated this rifle as Haga’s work in 1965, when first seeing this gun in person after being published 41 years earlier. This gun is exemplary, unaltered, among the best provenance of any Kentucky rifle. Barrel has inset front brass blade sight and fixed notched rear sight, a filled dovetail shows position of an earlier rear sight. Hand forged lock with bridled frizzen, flat unsupported serpentine cock, rebated tail. 3 Piece patchbox, simple rugged engraved brass mounts, toeplate finial shaped same form as patchbox. Haga’s characteristic low relief engraved scrolls on buttstock, rear of tang and rear of ramrod thimble. Beavertails carved rear of lock and sideplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1962 letter from Bill Crews concerning the history of this rifle & rare first edition of the Dillin text from 1924 talking about this gun & illustrating it (pg. 69-74). CONDITION: very good, “as found” condition. Rifle has a mix of smooth iron and brass patinas. Striped maple stock has hand worn patina with only 2 contemporary crack repairs and minor chipping back of lock & tang. PROVENANCE: Capt. John Dillin purchased from “Kauffman” about 1920; T.W. Demarest collection; Herman P. Dean collection; William G. Crews collection 1952; Dr. Howard Engle 1962. (01-19967/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.

EXEMPLARY GOLDEN AGE JACOB SELL, THE YOUNGER

Lot # 3412 (Sale Order: 414 of 634)

KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 48. NSN. Bbl. 51". This is a most unusual gun in that it was no doubt made by Jacob Sell but utilized a slightly earlier very long bbl. marked “JACOB FERREE”. This massive gun w/ beautiful lines measures 66 1/2" overall w/ 51" oct. bbl. The architecture & hardware are quite similar to other noted examples. 4 Piece, 5 piercing patchbox terminates in stylized horses head which is virtually identical to an example, figure 179 Kindig. A fine engraved hunters horn is found on patchbox lid. Stock is elegantly incised & low relief carved. Kindig states “Jacob Sells carving is really top quality. He understood the proportion & curve of the C-scroll & he utilized them to the best advantage. There are few men who designed & executed carvings better than this man. He carved in beautiful high relief & in generally the same four places; to the rear of the ramrod pipe, to the rear of the bbl. tang, forward of the patchbox & extensively on the cheekpiece side. In his carving, he repeated a few designs time after time.” This gun has similar carving rear of ramrod thimble, rear of bbl. tang & nice relief framing at wrist wrapping around patchbox & forward of cheekpiece into low relief scroll before terminating in lg. incised panel w/ a central lg. oval w/ sm. circle designs throughout unlike any other Sell we are aware of. This is a unique, possibly earlier Jacob Sell, the younger as it also has earlier style curled trigger & fine hand forged lock w/ rebated tail. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: interesting pair of letters from March 1962 concerning this rifle when sold in 1962 from William G. PROVENANCE: Ex Herman Dean collection: Ex William Crews: Ex Dr. Howard Engle collection (1962). (01-19966/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.

FINE PUBLISHED “M ALDENDERFER 1811” SIGNED

Lot # 3416 (Sale Order: 418 of 634)

KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 46. NSN. Bbl. 43.5" oct. to rnd. smoothbore & forged lock w/ chiseled mainspring & bridled frizzen. All brass mounted including inlays, engraved brass floorplate runs from ramrod thimbles to the trigger guard, 3.25" engraved thumbplate. This exact gun is pictured in plate 69 & 111 in Dillin’s 1924 text & in the 1941 Harry Davis “A. Forgotten Heritage”. The gun at the time of both publications was part of pioneer Kentucky rifle collection of Captain John G. W. Dillon. At the time the German script signature was thought to read “M. Roesser 1746”. The signature is light & quite difficult but not Roesser. Steve Hench, well known Kentucky expert who is amazing at deciphering the old script solved the mystery. With a little scrutiny the inscription is “M. Aldenderfer 1811” the last digit in the date may not be correct but first three are clear. Joe Kindig in his text shows 2 examples of Aldenderfer, one signed & dated 1809 & the other 1810, since his guns are very rare, maybe only made one gun a year. Kindig states that this maker “is somewhat of a mystery because his guns display characteristics of different sections in various techniques. Practically all gunsmiths who moved at all moved west following their market. Contrarily, Michael Aldenderfer seems to have moved east…. I believe M. Aldenderfer learned his trade in Lancaster County. In fact some details lead me to believe that he might have had some association w/ Haga or the man he learned his trade from [note engraving on patchbox lids, especially the engraved arc]…. The placing of a date w/ the name is characteristic of the section east of Reading.” This rifle also lacks the Daisy finial on patchbox that the 2 earlier dated guns possess, though still employing daisies in the engraved lid. This gun has less carving than the 2 examples in Kindig but does have very similar carving behind bbl. tang, lockplate & sideplate. The sideplate on this example is much more elaborate, pierced scrolls w/ 2 bird heads on either side of rear lock screw terminating out into feathered wings, quite unique design. Another Reading characteristic is the unique brass Indianhead inset on top of comb at buttplate w/ engraved heart on his chest, another unique feature, “suggestive of target” Dillin. Kindig also points out that the trigger bows on this maker are suggestive of Reading guns which are wide, w/ only 2 facets w/ central ridge, unlike most Golden age guns that had 3 facets on bow. “I believe M. Aldenderfer was one of the earliest gunsmiths to use the 2 faceted trigger guard & his are much broader than most. These rifles are very beautiful in line, proportion, detail & quality of wood”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1962 dated letter concerning purchase of gun. CONDITION: very good overall, appears in the same configuration when photographed in 1924, the only notable repairs: slender piece of wood glued & pinned around the entire perimeter of lock, 2 lg. crack repairs on right side of forestock about 10" from muzzle & a 4" x .25" sliver inset just forward of forearm crack repair, none of this work tried to hide or blend anything. Lock & hammer have dark mostly smooth iron patina. Mechanically fine w/ clean smoothbore. PROVENANCE: Capt. John Dillin collection 1920s: Herman Dean collection: William Crews: Dr. Howard Engle collection 1962. (01-19969/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.
