Louis D. Nimschke, for Members of His Immediate Family, Plus 18th Century Hand Calendar and Note

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 724)

An elegant hollow gold cross made for Nimschke's wife, her initials engraved on the suspension ring, W.L.N., in script; arms of the cross embellished with simple floral ornament on its face and the reverse plain, other than inscription in script on crossbar. Commercial gold-plated bracelet decorated by Nimschke with niello accented arabesques on a granulated ground, for his daughter Emelia, inscribed "E.E. Nimschke N.Y." on the interior face. A suite of gold sleeve buttons and a ring set with carved intaglio onyx plaques, made by Nimschke for his son-in-law, Louis Magnus Falck, the ring dated on the interior shoulder, "JANUARY 20, 1883" - while the sleeve buttons are dated on the attachment studs: "Aug. 28 1885." and "N. Y." The Pocket Calendar measuring 1-3/8"x1-3/4", with frontispiece portrait of Friedrich August, the title page dated 1732. Given by Nimschke to his daughter Emelia, accompanied by a signed note in German, the bottom line of which states: "Property of L.D. Nimschke  to Emelia."

L.D. Nimschke's abilities as a jewelry engraver are well-documented by prints mounted in his Work Book collection, as published by R.L. Wilson: L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver. However, actual examples of jewelry from his hand are rarely encountered. The survival of five pieces decorated by this famed master artisan and craftsman is significant. Note that pulls of the onyx plaques cut with the monogram "LF", as well as the engraved inscriptions on the sleeve buttons' attachment plates were preserved by prints pulled by Nimschke in his Work Book (page 46, lower right).
