Group of 3 United States Special Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1965-1967 with 15 C

Lot # 3716 (Sale Order: 959 of 1682)

Group of 3 United States Special Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1965-1967 with 15 Coins Inside!. In response to a nationwide shortage of coinage, ...morethe Treasury Department announced that no proof set or mint sets would be produced for collectors. In their place, so-called Special Mint Sets were issued featuring examples of each denomination carrying a finish superior to the standard circulation strikes, but not up the quality of proof coinage. Starting with 1965 Special Mint Set, each of the set contained the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The standard composition of the traditionally silver coins was changed starting this year. Rather than the previous 90% purity, the half dollar was struck in 40% silver. The five coins of the set were produced at the San Francisco Mint, although as with all coinage issued for this year mint marks were not used. Packaging for 1965 consisted of the five coins and a blue mint token sealed in a single plastic cellophane wrap. This was protected between two pieces of cardboard and placed within a white envelope with a notation of the contents. For 1966-1967, rather than the previous cellophane and white envelopes, the coins were mounted within a rigid plastic holder with a blue background. This holder was placed within an outer blue cardboard box. Special mint set coins typically have a uniformly brilliant or proof like finish. A minority of examples will display cameo contrast with design elements frosted against a proof like background. These cameo or deep cameo examples are prized by collectors and command premiums.

Lot # 3723 (Sale Order: 966 of 1682)

1874 US Fractional Currency Ten Cent Note 5th Issue, Fr-1264 Long,Thin Key Grades f+. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Ci...morevil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Group of 2 United States Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1972-1973 with 24 Coins Ins

Lot # 3728 (Sale Order: 970 of 1682)

Group of 2 United States Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1972-1973 with 24 Coins Inside!. Group of 2 United State Mint Set from 1972-1973 included ...morea total of 24 coins struck at three different mint facilities. Each set is comprised of three Lincoln Cents (P, D, S), two Jefferson Nickels (P, D), two Roosevelt Dimes (P, D), two Washington Quarters (P, D), two Kennedy Half Dollars (P, D). On top of that, for first time, dollar coins were included in a government packaged uncirculated coin set, the 1973 Mint Set included the Eisenhower Dollars struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, notably the Eisenhower Dollars were not issued for circulation, creating a low mintage key date for the series. For the 1972 Sets, the Denver Mint coins and plastic disc were placed in a cellophane marked with a red stripe and the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mint coins were placed in a separate cellophane with a blue stripe. Together they were placed between two cardboard inserts and placed within a white envelope. For the 1973 set the five Denver Mint coins were included in one cellophane with red edges. The six Philadelphia Mint and one San Francisco Mint coin were included in a separate cellophane with blue edges. Both were placed between light cardboard within a white envelope with markings indicating “U.S. Mint” and “1973 Uncirculated Coin”. This was a change from prior years of issue.

It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Were the Nazis under Field Marshall Rommel preparing a massive push through North Africa? If they did, and succedded, they could use the millions of dollars in currency the seized to buy war material. To thwart this, these Silver Certificates were sent to North Africa. Each has a yellow seal on the front. If the Nazis did succeed to over run our expeditiary force, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "North Africa" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.
