Fine Jacobs Double Barrel British Military Rifle, Richly Engraved and with African Lion on Steel Pat

Made without serial number, and without visible maker’s marking. .57 perc. cal. with deep 4-groove rifling, 24” round side-by-side barrels, with patent breech. Elaborate folding leaf sights, graduated for 100, 200 and 300 yards, with additional adjustable ladder sight, graduated from 400 up to 2,000 yards, in increments of 100 yards. Front sight with finely detailed blade, dovetailed onto long flat barrel rib. Fine English scroll engraving with some stamped borders on the back action locks and patent breech, the double hammers, and the upper tang, triggerguard, buttplate, and steel patchbox, with African lion motif, stamped borders and leaf motifs. Double triggers. Sling swivels. Bright steel ramrod with mushroom-shaped tip. Barrel band with tiny stamping “PATENT” and with stamp of two zeros with line between and the number “3.” Identical stamp on inside of patchbox lid. Case-hardened finish, with blued barrels, nipples, lanyard swivels, sights and screws. Checkered and varnished walnut stock. Overall length, 40-1/2”.
Some examples of the double and single barrel rifles designed by Brigadier-General John Jacob were used by individual Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War. These are thus considered within the realm of U.S. Civil War firearms and militaria. Among known makers of the exotic double-barrel rifle was London gunmaker George Daw.

Serial no. 31225, 12 ga., 27-1/2” rust-blued side-by-side barrels with solid rib, choked Full & Modified, maker’s inscription on rib at breech, engraved in script within scroll terminals “Armi Famars.” Proofs and standard markings on bottom of barrel breech. Barrels choked [to come] and [to come]. Engraved “Famars” in script within oval cartouche on bottom of frame. Italian proofmarks and Famars stamped marking, with serial number, on watertable. Finely and profusely executed English style rose and scroll engraving on the locks, hammers, breech and triggerguard, as well as matching on fore-end mounts. Fine border motif on barrel breech. Signature of engraver on triggerplate to left of front trigger, “OREL Inc.” Rust-blued finish to barrels and rib, with bright polished grey-finished locks, hammers, breech, thumb-lever release and triggerguard. Oil-finished select walnut stock, with checkered splinter fore-end; push-button fore-end release. Buttstock with straight checkered wrist and checkered butt. Length of pull, 14-1/2”, cast for right-handed shooter. Leather sporting case with red felt lining, Famars logo imprinted on lid lining. Acessories of Famars cleaning cloth, oil bottle and two snap caps. XXX marking on bottom of barrel lug indicates date of manufacture as 1974.

Greener crossbolt return spring is either missing or broken. Stocks show light general overall wear with near moderate flattening to checks. Shotgun locks up tight and bores are excellent. A beautiful antique shotgun that shows very well.

Historic 18K Gold Waltham Presentation Watch from U.S. President Grover Cleveland to Pedro Miramont

On January 18th, 1886, the American whaler "Ranger" ran aground on the shore at Ensenada on the Lower California coast. The crew were swept into the sea and would have perished but for the courage and humanity of a group of Mexican Ruales. One of the crew was swept out of their reach and lost despite their heroic efforts. The President of the United States, in appreciation of their valor, forwarded to the Ruales, memorials consisting of this gold watch, awarded to Miramontes and other medals given to members of the rescue party. Any documented presentation awards by U.S. presidents are extremely rare, and this particular award in the form of a gold watch is exceptional.
Condition:
Excellent with a few minor dents and blemishes. Mechanism appears to function well.

Case hardened barrel bands have gone mostly gray with just slight case hues remaining. Stock shows darkening near metal but has never been sanded and remains in near new overall condition. Action is crisp, bore is excellent.

The Georgia Troup Artillery was organized in Athens, Clarke County, GA in 1858 as the National Artillery with A.A. Franklin Hill being elected Captain. The name "Troup" was adapted for the unit in honor of Georgia's former governor, George M. Troup. The Artillery participated in Cheat Mountain and Sewell Mountain campaigns under generals Loring and Lee. They also served at Savage Station, Malvern Hill during the Seven Days campaign. Other actions were at Crampton's Gap, Maryland Heights, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg. Troup's artillery became part of the Cabell's Artillery Battalion during the reorganization of the Army of Virginia and were in the field at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, facing the 3rd Army Corps in the Peach Orchard and were on the extreme left flank of Pickett's charge. Scarce Wells Fargo Express Treasure Box with Marking on Front of “Wells Fargo & Co.”

Green painting on hardwood box with “WELLS FARGO/& CO.” painted in white letters on front. Forged iron straps and hinges, with forged iron tongue and loop to engage lock. Forged iron corners on bottom for reinforcement. Leather carrying straps riveted on each end. Paper remaining attached in upper left corner of inside surface of lid, on which is marked in pencil: “Train Nos/200 [over] 400 [bracket] B102 until 5:15 the A74 until 7:30/then B70-20.” Measuring 20-1/4” wide x 12” x 9-1/2” in height. Maker’s markings in the form of a paper label inside a treasure chest of this style was customarily that of Joseph Y. Ayer, whose firm was located at 3470 17th Street, in San Francisco, California.
Condition:
Very good. Showing extensive use. Brown patina to iron mountings. Nicks and marks on wood. Leather straps still attached to rivets, but straps themselves worn off to stubs. Inside cord for holding lid vertically when opened presently exists of remains of the cord and its two attachment iron studs. Old repainting while in service of Wells Fargo & Co.

Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy Revolver, with Period Belt and Holster

Condition:
Good to very good. Retaining approx. 40-50% toning blue with the balance having gone a light grayish brown. Case hardened frame and lever show just the faintest traces of color. Straps show light amounts of silver in protected areas, with period replacement triggerguard screw. Cylinder remains 60% vivid. Rachet to back of cylinder shows moderate wear with action only indexing in half the positions. Bore is at least very good and should clean to better. All visible numbers match, including wedge. Holster remains in very good condition, with most stitching remaining intact. Belt shows some repairs to stitching but is otherwise complete with no losses or extensive wear.

Condition:
Very good. Barrel assembly retains approx. 65% original factory blue, with general thinning along length of barrel and high edges of fluted area. Loading lever shows approx. 30% thinning hues, mostly in protected areas and top of lever. Naval cylinder engagement scene remains approx. 70% clear and vivid with about 40-50% original thinning blue finish remaining. Case hardening to frame and hammer, although very light at time of mfg., still retains approx. 30-40% light thinning hues, with a small area of light pitting adjacent to the hammer screw. Silver-plated trigger and backstrap show condition in the high 90% and may have been re-plated at a later date. Smooth walnut grips show light bruising and small scuffs, yet retain well over 70% of their original factory varnish. All matching visible serial numbers; wedge is blank. Condition:
Very good. Gray and brown patina to steel, with oxidation, more pronounced on muzzle and breech of cylinder and on breech of barrel. Rifling worn and pitted. Scattered nicks and wear, most pronounced on right side of frame and on right side and rear of barrel lug. Some machine marks still visible, most pronounced on capping cutout. Small metal flaw hole on left side of frame, above hammer screw. Cylinder stop slots worn, nicks at breech from hammer. Wedge screw appears to be a replacement. Screw to secure loading lever to plunger has been replaced by a form of rivet, as one would expect from a field repair. Mellow patina to brass, with some nicks. Grips smooth and with rich brown patina, and with scattered nicks, more pronounced on right panel at rear of butt.

Serial no.5323, .31 cal., 5-shot, 6” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, silver-plated brass backstrap and square triggerguard, round cylinder scene, Indian fight scene on cylinder, smooth varnished walnut grips, with two-line New York address. Mfg’d in 1849.
Condition:
Good to very good. Retaining approx. 30%-40% toning and thinning original blue on barrel mainly in protected areas. Frame shows traces of it’s original factory case. Straps show 40-50% thinning and toning silver plate. Smooth varnished walnut grips retain 60% original varnish, with general thinning and light scuffs and bruises. Indian fight cylinder scene shows light general wear yet still close to 70% vivid and with good detail. There is a small portion of the cylinder’s circumference with nicks and dings from tapping on another metal surface. All visible matching numbers including wedge. The safety pin is present. Action functions well with a bore that is very good to near fine. Screw slots remain mostly straight and true.

Serial no. 100494, .36 perc. cal., 6-shot cylinder with roll-engraved naval engagement scene. 7-1/2” barrel marked “- ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT. –“ Left side of frame stamped “COLTS/PATENT.” Fine and profuse scroll and border engraving of a rarely encountered style on barrel, loading lever, frame, backstrap and triggerguard strap. Gold-plated cylinder and nipples, hammer and loading lever assembly, the balance silver-plated. One-piece ivory grips, the left panel with exquisitely executed high relief-carved Mexican eagle motif, within finely carved relief panel, the upper and lower borders with finely detailed relief scrollwork. Varnished and brassbound mahogany case, lined in burgundy velvet, with accessories of silver-plated relief-embossed stand-of-arms powder flask, silver-plated steel bullet mold with “COLTS/PATENT” on spruecutter, packet of combustible skin cartridges by D.C. Sage & Co., tin of Eley Bros. caps, and miscellaneous lead projectiles. Lid of case inlaid with scalloped brass escutcheon. A diamond shaped brass escutcheon key plate inlaid on front of case.
This revolver is a scarce example of a deluxe percussion Colt handgun without engraving on the hammer, and with engraved borders to a roll-engraved cylinder scene. The style of engraving is rare and seldom encountered. The engraving, finishing and ivory grips were all executed at the time of the revolver’s production. Rosewood case with deep bottom, and the lid fitted with hinges wherein lid remains in vertical position when opened.

Traces of silver plating on triggerguard strap, mellow patina to brass. Crisp markings and cylinder scene, relatively light roll partly due to factory polish for bright blue. Serial no. 7240, .31 cal., 5-shot, 4” barrel, with blue and case hardened finish, silver-plated brass backstrap and triggerguard, smooth varnished walnut grips, with two line London address and English proofs to barrel lug and individual cylinders at nipple area. Mfg’d in 1856. In English oak partition case with iron bullet mold, English bag flask, and Eley Bros. Colt marked large cap tin, as well as wiping rod and loose skin cartridges.
Condition:
Fine. Retaining approx. 85% slightly thinning original finish to barrel assembly. Straps show 80-90% thinning and toning silver plate. Smooth varnished walnut grips retain 92% original varnish, thinning at high edges with light scuffs and bruises. Stagecoach cylinder scene shows light general wear yet still close to 95% vivid and with good detail. All visible matching numbers including wedge. All safety pins are present and in fine condition. Action functions well with a bore that is fine to excellent. Screw slots remain straight and true. Case remains in near fine condition with light scuffs and scratches to the top portion. Interior red cotton velveteen shows light fading and minor oil staining at contact points to pistol.

Barrel assembly has been cleaned showing little finish but with sharp lines. Safety pins are present but flat. Action functions well with a bore that is fair to good.

Early and Desirable Winchester 1st Model 1866 Flatside Saddlering Carbine

Very good to near fine. Showing all screws correct and original with very little deviation to their slots. Brass shows light coffee patination with light general overall wear. Barrel, mag tube and bands retain approx. 75% original finish toning to brown with most of the wear to the high edges of bands. Lifter block edges remain sharp and crisp. Case colored hammer and lever show more than just traces of original color but have toned mostly dark. All internal serial numbers are matching. Loading gate retains approx. 60% vivid hues with most of the brightness at the outside perimeter and turning slightly brown in the center. Action is tight, bore is near fine and should clean.

Fine to excellent. Retaining approx. 96% original blue with just light toning to forward edges of receiver. Barrel shows light highpoint edgewear and light general overall thinning. Brass lifter block shows excellent patina and maintains very sharp edges indicating light use. Hammer retains approx. 80% thinning case colors. Lever shows approx. 40% having mostly turned to silvery gray. Crescent buttplate shows approx. 50% toning and darkening case hues with nicely patinated sliding brass trap. Scarce and early Winchester Long-Range vernier sight shows light toning and flaking to its japanned finish. Stocks show wear from light general use with slight dings, bruises and general scratching, but otherwise near fine. Action is tight, bore is excellent.

Rare and Desirable Winchester Flatside Unserial Numbered Prototype Lever Action Rifle

Fine to excellent. Barrel shows approx. 98% factory finish. Top of bolt shows approx. 85-90% blue toning to brown. Both sides of receiver shows early type forging striations, with the finish having thinned considerably to approx. 30-40% evenly overall. (Lack of finish could be explained by early experiments with metal hardness.) Magazine retains approx. 90% factory blue with only slight wear in the action areas. Hammer retains approx. 96% factory blue. Upper tang shows light general thinning. Case colors to lever and buttplate show about 95% vivid hues to side of lever, with the rear most part of the lever having toned to silver. Buttplate colors remain over 90% vivid with just light thinning. Stocks fit impeccably showing only slight discoloration at wood-to-metal areas with just minor dings and scratches overall. Tip of fore-end is inset with ebony inlay. Action is crisp, bore is very good and should clean to excellent. Rifle appears to be full of old factory grease.

Gold wash finish is visible in protected areas underneath lever, around trigger, and in the areas near the trigger retaining pin.
