1862 CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE RICHMOND RIFLE MUSKET

Lot # 2225a (Sale Order: 268 of 413)

1862 Confederate Richmond Musket. Richmond wood stock. Lock plate bears distinctive hump characteristic of metalwork. This shape was designed to support the Maynard tape primer systems, which due to economy or limited time, the Confederates chose to leave off of the rifles. When the Federal tooling wore out, armory mechanic made new dies that minimized the hump, and added a "C.S." above the "RICHMOND VA" mark on lock plates forged after 1862, as shown on this rifle. Bands on rifle are marked with a "U", indicating that they were of Union manufacture. This was a common occurrence on these rifles, due to the fact that the Confederates, again due to economy, efficiently combed the battlefields, salvaging and re-using the parts. The buttplate on the rifle is steel, and the stock bears the hand carved initials "J.M.". There is also a stamped marking of "VP" and an illegible symbol on the upper left of the barrel, opposite the lock plate. Shows Richmond T mortice, minus the recoil shield. Ramrod may also have been replaced at some point. This rifle is in overall very good condition. EST 7000 - 10000...more
