Exceptional Palmer Civil War Bolt Action Carbine
The Palmer carbine, manufactured by E.G. Lamson & Co., of Windsor, Vermont, is significant as the first metallic cartridge, bolt-action weapon accepted by the Ordnance Department for issue to the U.S. Army. The Ordnance Department contracted the 1001 Palmer carbines late in the Civil War; the carbines were delivered in June 1865, after the fighting ceased, thus were un-issued. The Palmer carbine featured a short handle at the rear of the receiver; a quarter turn of the bolt handle unlocks the bolt and pulling it to the rear extracts the fired case and opens the chamber. The hammer is cocked manually before opening. The barrel has a folding, single leaf rear sight. The sight has three apertures and is graduated to 500 yards. A sling bar and ring are attached to the left stock flat. The 20-inch .50 caliber round barrel is blue. The bolt is bright and the bolt handle, hammer, lock plate, barrel band, trigger guard, butt plate and sling bar are casehardened. The stock is oil finished walnut. The lock plate is marked: "U.S. / E.G. LAMSON & CO / WINDSOR VT." in front of the hammer and dated "1865" behind it. The top of the receiver has the three line marking: "Wm PALMER / PATENT / DEC. 22, 1863". A small "BFS" is stamped on the left rear side of the barrel next to the rear sight. There are no other inspection marks on the carbine, making this piece one of very few, rarely encountered non-inspected carbines.

Outstanding Scarce Lindsay Two Shot Model 1863 U.S. Superposed Rifled Musket with Bayonet

Lot # 1373 (Sale Order: 374 of 1045)

Outstanding Scarce Lindsay Two Shot Model 1863 U.S. Superposed Rifled Musket with Bayonet
This rare Civil War 1863 U.S. Double Rifle Musket was manufactured by J.P. Lindsay in 1863-64. The Ordnance Department purchased 1000 of these two-shot rifle muskets. The muskets were withdrawn from service after they showed a tendency to fire both of the superposed charges simultaneously. The musket has a single barrel and two hammers and is fitted with the standard two-leaf folding rear sight, screw-fastened barrel bands and straight shank, tulip-head ramrod. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The rear sight has a blue finish; all of the other components were originally 'National Armory Bright'. The top of the barrel is marked: "LINDSAY/PATENTED OCT. 9, 1860" in two lines. The heel of the buttplate is stamped "U.S.". The left stock flat is stamped with two Ordnance inspection marks which consist of the scrip initials "ADK" with an oval border. The bright finished, Model 1855 socket bayonet is stamped "U.S." on the shank.
BBL:
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN

Condtion: Unissued, very fine. The musket has never been cleaned and is protected with a "nicotine" type coating and all of the original arsenal bright finish remains under this. The balance of the barrel, hammers, trigger guard, barrel bands and buttplate has a mellow patina. The rear sight retains nearly all the original blue finish. The stock is in excellent condition with sharp edges, crisp inspection marks and raised, 'feathered' grain. Wear is limited to some scattered, minor, storage marks. The musket appears to be un-issued and un-fired. The bayonet has not been cleaned and is in good overall condition with a dark patina and some scattered patches of light surface rust. This is an outstanding untouched, original example of a scarce and unusual Civil War rifle musket.
