Sharps New Model 1863 Rifle

Lot # 1175 (Sale Order: 176 of 730)      

Serial no. C 34100, .52 cal., 30" barrel, blue and case hardened finish and walnut stock having three barrel bands and adjustable rear sight. Very well marked with: NEW MODEL 1863 on barrel breech, RS.LAWRENCE PAT APRIL 12TH, 1859 & C.SHARPS PATENT OCT 5TH, 1852 on right side plate. C.SHARPS PAT SEPT 12TH 1848 on left side. Every part appears inspector marked and stock having six cartouches
New model circa 1859-1866 with a straight breech and pellet priming feature built into the lockplate. After serial numbers reached 100,000 a "C" prefix was used so this is actually number 134,100.



Condition:
Remarkably in excellent to near new condition in every repect. Blue finish, case colors and stock all 98% with some finish loss around muzzle area. Action is very strong, bore is bright.

Unique Bridgeport Sharps Model 1874 Single-Shot Business Sporting Rifle, with Original Tack-Decorate

Lot # 1176 (Sale Order: 177 of 730)      

Serial no. 160570, .45-90 cal., 28" round barrel with dovetailed blade type front sight and ladder type rear elevation sight, blanked mid-sight, drop-block action with set-triggers, walnut fore-end with buttstock profusely inlaid with copper and silver spots, mother of pearl inlays and decorative tacks on both sides. Left side of wrist with punch-engraved primitive silver parallelogram escutcheon marked: O.W.S[backwards] 1874. Other design elements include stars, steel diamond spots, a tomahawk, German silver pineapple inlay salvaged from the tang of an early firearm, copper medallions and copper and iron nail studs. Right side with silver panel emulating a patchbox with engraved animals and bordered by silver tacks. An original and beautifully period decorated Sharps buffalo rifle, deserving of further research. 

Condition:
Good. Metal showing pleasant original grey-brown age patina and wear overall. Wood with wear and beautiful patina on inlaid elements. Action is very good.

Exceptionally Fine Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Octagon Single-Shot Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 1177 (Sale Order: 178 of 730)      

Serial no. 155828, .40 cal., 28" blued octagonal barrel, the top flat marked: Sharps Rifle Co., Hartford, Conn. [On February 4, 1876, Sharps had just moved to the Bridgeport plant from Hartford, making this one of the last rifles shipped with Hartford barrel markings]. Blued dovetailed front sight with German silver bead. Ladder-type R.S. Lawrence marked rear sight. Breech marked: Calibre .40. Right side of barrel at breech marked with upside down numeral 70. Standard dropblock action with extractor, case-hardened hammer, frame, lever and buttplate. Varnished walnut stock and fore-end. Sold together with Sharps factory letter confirming configuration and showing invoiced on February 4, 1876, to S.A. Richardson, of Troy, N.Y. Other noted information is the fact the cartridge was chambered for the 70 grain case and the list price at the time was $36.00! A very fine example of this type frontier sporting rifle.

Condition:
Excellent. Barrel retaining approx. 90-95% finish, now fading to a rich plum brown in places with slight wear to relief edges and minor spots overall. Hammer, frame and lever retaining strong amounts of faded, silvered and flaking case-hardening with scattered wear and patina. Some areas of vibrant color remaining. Wood excellent with early varnish and showing minor dents and bruises present. Action is tight and crisp, bore is bright.

Exceptional and Historic Deluxe Providence Tool Co. Peabody-Martini Rifle, Exquisitely Engraved by C

Lot # 1178 (Sale Order: 179 of 730)      

serial no. 2, .45 Turkish cal., 33-1/4" round barrel with folding ladder military sight and fixed front sight, Henry-style rifling. Barrel marked: Manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, R.I., U.S.A. Action shows an exquisitely and profusely engraved, featuring on the right side a Goddess of Victory motif, her left hand holding a miniature figure of Mercury. The finely detailed banner beneath inscribed Peabody and Martini Patents. The left side shows a finely detailed "The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill", miniature depiction of the John Trumbull painting, (Yale University Art Gallery). Exquisitely detailed borders are engraved on both sides of the frame to accentuate the finely engraved panel scenes. Loading lever pin on the left side of frame engraved with miniature shield motif; cocking indicator on the right with small laurel wreath motif and border. Profuse engraving of richly detailed scrollwork with stippled background on the frame, breechblock, triggerguard, breech lever, barrel with flat-topped breech, barrel bands, fore-end cap and steel buttplate. Buttplate also with cross hatched with line border, checkered trigger, with finely checkered thumbrest oval on tip right of frame. Finish is of bright polished steel, selected to reveal the extraordinary degree of detail of the engraving. Checkered straight grip stock of varnished highly figured walnut, with checkered fore-end. Panels of very fine checkering at head of stock and underside of fore-end.

Illustrated and described in R.L. Wilson, "A Century of Engraving" Guns and Ammo Annual, 1976. The rifle was one of the featured exhibits in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876, along with exceptional Colt, Winchester and other make firearms.

Although for some years attributed to the hand of Gustave Young, a detailed examination of all features of the engraving suggests this to be the work of Conrad F Ulrich. The border motifs to the f...more

Rare and Unique Peabody-Wessely Patent Drop-Block Hammerless Military Musket

.42 Russian cal.,30" blued barrel with bayonet lug and standard military sights, two case-hardened steel barrel bands, case-hardened Martini style drop-block action with spring-loaded cocking lever, unique spool type trigger block. Walnut stocks, steel cleaning rod. Sling mounts. A. Ritter von Wessely obtained a patent on his Peabody improvement in 1869 that is very similar to the design on this firearm.

Condition:
Excellent. Retaining approx. 95-99% finish with some fading to case-hardening. Wood excellent with light marks. Action is excellent.

Condition:
Very good to fine. Retaining approx. 60-70% finish with scattered wear and patina with minor pitting and spotting. Silvered and flaking case-hardening. Wood good to very good, showing dents, bruises and minor gouges. Sling is excellent for this type item, retaining flexibility and suppleness. Minor checking to leather. Action is excellent.

.45 cal., 26 3/4" round barrel with top flat, proofmark on bottom of barrel at breech, no sights, unique drop-block action with right side thumb lever. Walnut pistol-grip buttstock with shotgun butt. No fore-end. Right side of buttstock with attached label reading: "Experimental Grainger, Durham, single shot made in Greener shop, about 1888. Still has Greener collection tag. Seems to be set back & rechambered for .45-70. Barrel is proofmarked, bore is perfect, very fine walnut. Rifle never quite completed." No buttplate.

Good as configured. Grey and brown age patina. Wood with wear and patina. No fore-end or buttplate.

Rare American Experimental Breechloading Military Percussion Carbine, ca. 1840

No serial number visible, .36 cal., 22-1/2" round barrel with hexagonal bore and dovetailed front sight [bead missing], steel under-rib, unmarked brass frame with integral languets and fire-blued screws, front-loading Hall-style percussion breechblock with swivel, flip-over breechblock locking lever, dovetailed rear peep sight, brass triggerguard, walnut stock with diamond wedge escutcheons and steel buttplate, steel thimbles and wooden ramrod. While this interesting and obscure firearm appears in many ways to be a sealed pattern test example, although exhibiting elements of both Hall and Starr carbines, more research needs to be done to identify it specifically. Also note, page 121 and 131 in U.S. Patents by Stockbridge, showing a similar configuration by Tryon, Skinner and B.S. Roberts.

Condition:
Fine. Barrel and steel elements with mottled grey-brown age patina and minor spotting. Screws with wear and fading to blued finish. Brass with mellow age patina. Wood excellent with light wear and marks, and tiny hairline crack in front of triggerguard. Action is good.

NSNV, .42 cal., 27-1/4" blued heavy octagonal barrel with unique 1-5/8" false muzzle with integral telescopic sight protector and hook locking system. Finely ribbed base, bottom of barrel with dovetailed brass stabilizing bench bar, top flat with vacant front dovetail and marked: L.W. Tisdel/Scranton, Pa. Finely scroll-engraved and silver-plated breechblock, dolphin pattern hammer and lockplate. Lock marked: L.W. Tisdel. Upper tang with integral mount for peep sight not present, set triggers, fine walnut stock with integral cheekrest and scroll-engraved silver-plated brass Schutzen buttplate with threaded bullet shaped finial with lanyard hole.


Condition:
Excellent as restored. Barrel retaining approx. 85-90% refinish now fading to plum patina with light wear to relief edges. Silver-plated elements with dark patina. Wood cleaned and refinished with minor wear and marks present. Action is fine. A handsome and desirable American target rifle.

Springer in Wein/Stahl. Gold band at breech, scroll-engraved breech and tang with tang-mounted adjustable peep sight, unique reverse mounted engraved hammer with engraved hooded pan, fine. Floral engraved lockplate with riband reading: Springer in Wein. Finely engraved counter screws and rosettes, set triggers with vertical finger rest, walnut Schutzen stock with integral cheek and thumb rests, vacant silver escutcheon on underside of fore-end, German silver oval wedge escutcheons with engraved wedges, steel furniture engraved en suite, scrolling, fingerform triggerguard, ornately engraved and case-hardened Schutzen buttplate. Overall, a very handsome and appealing Schutzen target rifle.

Condition:
Fine to excellent. Barrel showing a mottled grey-brown patina with scattered light surface spotting and wear to relief edges. Faded but present case-hardening. Wood with wear, dents and minor blemishes. Minor hairline cracks at wedges. Action is excellent with extremely fine trigger pull.

Case-hardened Westley Richards patented falling block action with with offset button-activated under lever barrel latch, sliding safety, tang-mounted long range vernier peep sight.  Checkered walnut pistol-grip buttstock and fore-end with horn cap, vacant silver oval escutcheon on bottom of buttstock, checkered pistol grip stock butt, sling eyes, ebonized wooden ramrod with brass cap. This exact rifle is attributed to William Ruger and is reproduced on page 70 of: Ruger & His Guns: A History of the Man, the Company and Their Firearms by R.L. Wilson.

U.S. Model 1843 North Breechloading Percussion Carbine

Lot # 1197 (Sale Order: 198 of 730)      

NSNV, .58 cal. rifled, 21" barrel with standard sights and two steel bands.  Breech marked: U.S./S.North/M.1843/1848. Side-mounted breech lever, saddlering and bar, walnut stock with inspectors cartouches, right side of stock and buttstock marked: B.E.C.S. Bottom of buttstock with carved initials: DA. Steel ramrod. Approx. 5000 of this firearm were included in the U.S. arsenal. They were the focus of a large government procurement scandal involving J.P. Morgan and reworked by W.W. Marston, issued to the 2nd and 9th Illinois.
   

Condition:
Fair to good. Metal with dark age patina and pitting overall. Wood with wear and numerous dents and bruises. Action is good.

Palmer Bolt Action Model 1865 Carbine

Lot # 1198 (Sale Order: 199 of 730)      

No serial number visible, .58 cal., 20" round barrel, blue and case-hardened finish, walnut stock with saddlering set-up. Receiver marked on top: Wm. Palmer Patent Dec. 22, 1863. Lockplate marked forward of hammer: U.S. E.G. Lamson & Co. Windsor, VT 1865. Stock, buttplate, barrel band and triggerguard all proofed.  Contracted late in the Civil War with delivery not being made until June 1865.



Condition:
Very good to fine. Showing an even patina throughout with some traces of case-hardening. Excellent stock showing minimal wear for its age. Cartouches are all sharp. Action is strong, bore is bright.

Serial no. 6476, .52 RF cal., 22" barrel, blue and case hardened finish, one-piece walnut stock, U.S. marked steel buttplate, standard three-leaf rear sight.  Used predominantly by the Union Cavalry regiments, particularly the 4th and 8th Indiana, 19th New York, 13th Tennessee, 9th Pennsylvania, 3rd West Virginia, 2nd Wisconsin, 1st Nebraska, 1st Nevada, and 11th Ohio.

Condition:
Very good. Sideplate retains traces of original case colors. White barrel and breech show light to moderate toning. Stock is dark with moderate knackering. Action is crisp, bore is good.
