Historic 7th Cavalry Serial Range, Ainsworth Inspected, Colt Cavalry Single Action Revolver with Kop

Lot # 1392 (Sale Order: 393 of 1039)

Historic 7th Cavalry Serial Range, Ainsworth Inspected, Colt Cavalry Single Action Revolver with Kopec Letter
Estimate: $10000 - $20000
This U.S. Colt Cavalry Single Action Revolver was manufactured in 1874 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector O. W. Ainsworth. This revolver is accompanied by a letter of authentication by Colt Single Action Army expert John A. Kopec. The letter states that this revolver falls within the serial number range of revolvers known to have been issued to the U.S. 7th Cavalry and carried at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Kopec states that Cavalry Single Action revolvers serial numbers 5020, 5065, and 5099 are "presumptive" 7th Cavalry issues and that serial number 5100 is a documented Custer Battlefield relic found on the Reno-Benteen battlefield. The revolver has the early 'script' address: "+COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co., HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.+" on the top of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the early, two-line/two-date, patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark. Light scratches on the side of the frame indicate that an attempt was made to obliterate the property marking. The Kopec letter notes that other revolvers in the 7th Cavalry serial number range have similar defaced markings and that these scratches may have been the result of an attempt by the Sioux to obliterate the "U.S." markings. The serial number. "5080" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap, and on the side of the barrel and cylinder. Small "P" proofmarks are stamped on the barrel and the side of the cylinder. The distinctive "A" inspection mark of O.W. Ainsworth is visible on the cylinder and on the trigger guard below the serial number. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "342". The barrel has been shortened to 4 3/4-inches and the front sight has been moved....

U.S. Colt Artillery Model Single Action Army Revolver
Estimate: $6000 - $7500
From 1895 to 1903 a number of "US" marked Single Action Army revolvers, like this one, were returned to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory where they were modified (to 5 1/2 inch barrel length), dismantled and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. (Writer believes this revolver to be a Springfield Armory rework). These revolvers have a 5 1/2 inch barrel, casehardened frame and blue cylinder, grip frame and barrel. The serial numbers are mixed on these altered models and they were remarked by inspectors of the era. This revolver is serial numbered "41042" on the frame, "115065" over a "G" on the trigger guard, "94811 / G" on the backstrap and "9113" on the cylinder, which is also marked with a "P" and "A". It bears the standard one line address on top of the barrel, "P" and "R.A.C." marked on the bottom of the barrel and the three line, three patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". The loading gate is numbered "1726". Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Historic Dalton Gang Documents
Estimate: $10000 - $30000
Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1876. A statement that accompanies the revolver states that it was carried by Gratton Dalton in the disastrous double bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5, 1892. The old, handwritten document that accompanies the revolver states that this revolver was owned and carried by "Grat" Dalton when he was killed in the Coffeyville bank robbery and that the revolver was given to Dr. W.H.
