Martially Inspected U.S. Starr Arms Model 1858 Civil War Double Action Army Revolver

This is a nice example of a Civil War Model 1858 double-action revolver manufactured under government contract by the Starr Arms Co., of New York, New York between January 1862 and May 1863. The revolver has a six-shot cylinder, solid frame, and one piece oil-finished walnut grip. The barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever and short spur hammer are casehardened. A blade front sight is mortised on the barrel and the rear sight is a shallow notch in the hammer lip. The right side of the frame is marked "STARR'S PATENT JAN.15, 1856" and the left side is marked "STARR ARM'S CO., NEW YORK". The serial number, "18079 is stamped on the front of the frame, the inside of the hammer well and on the cylinder. Single-letter ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most major components. Two script Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the grip (upper and lower) and a single script inspection mark is stamped on the lower left side. Star Model 1858 revolvers were widely issued to Federal cavalry regiments during the Civil War.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 70% plus of the original high polished blue finish with scattered flaking. The exposed areas have a smooth brown patina with a couple of small areas of spotting on the right side of the barrel. Rare U.S. Martially Inspected C.S. Pettengill Patent Double Action Army Revolver

Cone front and groove rear sights, with "PETTENGILLS/ PATENT 1856" on the right side of the sighting groove and "RAYMOND & ROBITAILLE / PATENTEE 1858" on the left side. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the butt. The left rear barrel flat, left side of the frame and cylinder are marked with a "WW" inspection mark. Fitted with smooth flared butt grips, with a faint cartouche on the left panel. A total of about 3,400 of these revolves were made in the early 1860s. In 1861 the U.S. Ordnance Department ordered 5,000, however after failing trials the order was changed to 2,000, June of 1862. The 3rd Michigan Cavalry was issued 500 and other units such as the 3rd and 5th Missouri Militia, 1st Arkansas and 3rd Illinois and Kentucky were issued less amounts. The revolver comes with a brief history of the Pettengill.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown patina with some minor pitting on the frame. The grips have had a coat of varnish applied and remain good with a few minor chips and nicks along the lower edges and a few minor handling marks. The action is in need of work, the cylinder does not lock up properly. The markings are legible.

Desirable Martially Inspected Civil War Navy Remington Model 1861 Percussion Revolver

Marked "PATENTED DEC. 17, 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y." on top of the barrel. The patent was for the grooved lever to allow the cylinder pin to be pulled forward without lowering the loading lever. This was William Elliot's patent and his name is sometimes found on the lever. The serial numbers on these started after the last of the Beal's patent Navy revolvers, at about 15,000, so this is approximately the 565th revolver of this model made. Approximately 12,000 were made in 1862. The serial numbers match in the left side of the frame under the grip, and the bottom of the barrel. A "CGC" cartouche is on the left grip with "W" and "J" initials on various parts. The aforementioned cartouche is also found on the rare U.S. Contract Henry rifles!

Condition: Very good plus with 20% original blue, strong in protected places but mostly a smooth blue/brown patina. The barrel marking remains crisp. The rear of the cylinder shows some battering. The grips are fine showing light use, have some light chipping around the bottom, a few scattered minor dings and dents, and the cartouche is crisp. The action is excellent.

Manufactured from 1863-1875. Fixed pinched blade front sight and notched rear sight. The top barrel flat is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION NEW YORK. U.S.A / NEW-MODEL". Brass trigger guard. Single letter inspection marks (W, R, G and D) are stamped on most of the components. Matching serial number on the barrel and on the frame under the left grip and "143" is marked on the back of each grip panel. Smooth period customized walnut grips with a decorative silver bar inset at the bottom of each panel.

Manufactured by Charles Buss of Marlboro, N.H. circa 1855, with less than 25 produced and only 5 known to exist, including the patent model. Intended to work around Colt's patent, the cylinder is revolved by hand, with a spring loaded "U" shaped block, aka the "straddler" holding the cylinder in place. Single brass bead sight, with "CHARLES BUSS. / MARLBORO, N.H. / PATENTED / APR. 25, 1854" on the top strap, the serial number on the bottom barrel flat, and scroll leaf engraving on the barrel flats, frame and backstrap. This revolver is pictured on page 26 of "American Percussion Revolvers" by Sellers and Smith, which also states that serial number 17 is the highest known example.

Covered by patent #16575 (Brettel & Frisbie, 10 Feb 1857), less than six of these revolvers are known to collectors today (see, for example, Seller and Smith's "American Percussion Revolvers", page 19). The patent covered an improvement to the Ells revolver, consisting of the addition of a "hesitation lock"- a mechanism in which the first pull of the trigger cocks the hammer and a further pull releases it. The revolver could also be fired by pulling the trigger straight through, ignoring the "hesitation". Marked "BRETTELL. & FRISBIE. / PATENTED FEB. 10. 1857." on left side of the hammer, "BRETTELL. / & / W. B. POTTS / COL. O" on right side and "EUREKA" on top. W.B Potts refers to William Potts of Columbus, Ohio, who was the son of a hardware dealer and was listed in the 1861-1862 City Directories as operating a brass foundry. Five shot cylinder, with iron frame and smooth grips. "53" is marked on the back of both grips, the bottom barrel flat and cylinder pin.

Produced in the late 1850s as one of around 300 Third Model Pettengill revolvers. Pin and notch sights, with the top of the frame marked "PETTENGILL'S / PATENT 1856" and the bottom of the frame is marked "RAYMOND & ROBITAILLE / PATENTED 1858". Matching serial number on the butt, two places on the loading lever assembly, cylinder, inside of the trigger guard and on the inside of each grip panel. Fitted with a two piece solid loading lever and two piece smooth varnished grips.

Constructed from mahogany, iron and brass, this is the original model for patent #16575, issued 10 February 1857 to Francis S. Brettell and Joseph B. Frisbie of Allegheny City, PA. The iron hammer is marked "F. S. BRETTELL" on the right , "J. B. FRISBIE" on the left and "ALLEGHENNY(sic). PA." on top. Mechanically functional, and produced without a trigger guard. Similar in form to the Ells Second Model revolver, though this patent was granted a month before Ells' was issued. Used by Cooper on his revolvers, with very few arms produced under this patent. The mechanism was used by Cooper on his revolvers. With a photocopy of the patent.

Also known as the John Brown Model, this Maynard primed belt revolver was manufactured from 1851 to 1857 with about 1000 produced. The 31 caliber, 6 shot manual rotating cylinder has a floral and military etching, with the broad scroll design engraved on the lock, frame and hammer. Blue finish with casehardened frame and silver plated backstrap and trigger guard. The top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS" and "MAYNARD'S PATENT SEP. 22, 1845" with eagle/shield motif on door of the Maynard primer. "773" on the frame, with "613" on the fixed cylinder pin. Fixed sights and a smooth one piece grip.

There is some minor flash pitting with some scattered minor spotting. The backstrap and trigger guard retain 80% of the original silver plating. The grip is very good with a series of minor dings on the bottoms, along with some scattered minor handling marks overall.

A) Manhattan Fire Arms Company, Navy Type percussion revolver manufactured circa 1864. This "Series IV" revolver has a blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. The one-piece walnut stock has a varnished finish. The five-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with martial scenes in five panels and marked with the 1859 patent date with has ten stops. The top barrel flat is "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J. / PATENTED MARCH 8.1864". The matching serial number is located on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and the partial number "0925" is marked on the wedge and arbor pin, and the rear face of the cylinder is stamped "095".

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 60% of the original bright blue finish mixed with smooth brown patina. The remaining metal surfaces have a brown and gray patina with some of the original casehardening pattern remaining on the frame. The trigger guard retains 25% original silver plating, much of which has darkened with age. The balance of the brass has an aged patina. The grip is good with exception of a repair on the upper left, moderate chips on each toe, a few minor gouges and chips in the varnish. The cylinder scenes are strong and the markings are clear. Mechanically fine.

Sharps, three-band, New Model of 1863 Breech-Loading Rifle manufactured in 1864-1865. The rifle has a blue barrel with casehardened, barrel bands, receiver, lever, patch box and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The rifle retains the original Lawrence pellet primer. The rifle front sight serves as a lug for the socket bayonet. The folding leaf rear sight has an 800 yard center notch and the base has R.S. Lawrence patent markings. The rifle barrel is roll-stamped: "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN." between the rear sight and lower barrel band. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NEW MODEL 1863" between the rear sight and the receiver and the left side is stamped with the Ordnance Sub-Inspector's "M.N.M." initials. Two script, rectangular, Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the left stock wrist. Ordnance sub-inspection marks are visible on the bottom of the forearm and the top of the stock comb. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "C.S. SHARPS' PAT./ SEPT. 12th 1848" in two lines. R.S. Lawrence 1859 patent markings are stamped on the upper right side of the receiver behind the pellet primer. Sharps 1859 patent markings are stamped on the lower lock plate behind the hammer. The serial number, "C34848" is stamped on the upper receiver tang. The angular bayonet is stamped: "&Co" on the left side of the socket. Sharps manufactured 6,150 New Model 1863 Rifles under government contract during the Civil War. Most of these rifles were purchased to arm the four U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiments raised in 1865. These regiments were issued Sharps, Spencer and Henry rifles and the members of the regiments were authorized to retain their rifles on discharge as an encouragement for enlistment. The...

The Sharps Carbine was the most widely issued and important Federal Civil War cavalry carbine. This New Model 1863 Carbine has a military blue barrel, casehardened receiver, hammer, lever, barrel band and buttplate with an oil finished walnut stock and forearm. The barrel is fitted with a Lawrence patent folding leaf sight graduated to 800 yards. The straight breech receiver has the Sharps pellet priming system and a sling bar and ring on the left side. The late pattern stock lacks the patch box fitted to earlier models. The top of the barrel has the Sharps markings between the rear sight and barrel band, "NEW MODEL 1863" located between the rear sight and the receiver and the left rear flat is marked "EAW". The lock plate is marked with the R.S. Lawrence 1859 and the Sharps 1852 patent dates. The Sharps 1848 patent date is on the left side of the receiver. The serial number is located on the top of the receiver tang. The sling bar base and top of the stock in front of the tang are stamped "A.W.M." and the buttplate tang is stamped with the letter "M".

This particular carbine is chambered in the rare 40-70 cartridge rather than the standard 50-70 caliber found on these carbines. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "SHARPS 40-70 STRAIGHT", the left side of the receiver has the two line Sharps September, 1848 patent date and the lock the two line October, 1852 patent date. The serial number appears on the upper tang. The front sight has been moved back 1/4", the original slot filled and the blade is missing from the reset sight due to shortening the barrel. The rear sight is the standard folding leaf carbine sight graduated to 800 yards. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with saddle ring bar mounted on the left wrist (ring absent) and iron carbine buttplate.

Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine that was one of the 31,098 carbines converted by Sharps to fire the .50-70 center fire cartridge. This carbine has an arsenal re-lined bore with three-groove rifling. The carbine was completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, lever, hammer, and buttplate. The sling bar and ring were finished bright. The carbine has a brass front sight blade and folding, adjustable leaf rear sight with Lawrence patent marked base and graduated to 800 yards, and the percussion Lawrence pellet priming system. There are no visible markings on the barrel except for an "F" stamped on the left rear flat. The lock is marked with the Sharps and R.S. Lawrence patent markings and fading Sharps patent marking is on the left side of the receiver with the serial number on the upper tang. Mounted with a smooth oil finished black walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a small "DFC" cartouche in a ribbon on the left side. Sharps .50-70 metallic conversion carbines were widely issued to the U.S. Cavalry, including the 10th and 7th Cavalry regiments, on the frontier after the Civil War and remained in service until they were replaced by the .45-70 Springfield Carbine.

Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer's Sword with inscribed scabbard. The scabbard throat is engraved with the inscription: "Geo. H. Cramm/Col.9th Ky. Vol. Inf." in two lines. The sword has a regulation pattern 31 1/2-inch blade decorated with acid etched floral designs on the obverse and an eagle with shield on a sunburst background on the reverse. The retailer's marking: "FLETCHER/BENNETT/LOUISVILLE/KY" is etched on the reverse with the trademark "MONITOR" etched below the retailer mark on the ricasso. The sword has a regulation pattern, gold-plated, brass, two-branch guard and pommel. The outer branches of the guard have "US" and pierced floral decorations. The grip has a black leather wrapped with two strands of twisted brass wire. The regulation pattern scabbard has a browned steel body with brass throat, suspension bands and drag. The 9th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered into service in November 1861 and fought in the battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, the Siege of Atlanta and numerous smaller engagements. It was mustered out of service on December 15, 1864. The 9th Kentucky Infantry lost 8 officers and 96 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 3 officers and 250 enlisted men died of disease

28 inch, curved, single edge blade, with a single fuller becoming double fullers near the tip and extensive etching on each side including "UNITED STATES MARINES" banners, scrollwork, shield and flag designs, and a darker etched panel with the name "S.L. Rothapfel" on the left side. Gilt finished hilt with acorn topped dual quillion guards and a pair of smooth ivory grip panels with decorative 5-pointed gilt stars. Nickel finished sheath, with gilt fittings, oak leaf engraved suspension bands and blooming roses on the drag. Born in 1882, Samuel Lionel Rothapfel lied about his age to join the Marines at 14, where he would fight in the Boxer Rebellion and rise to the rank of Drill Sergeant. Mustering out after a 7 year stint, Rothapfel spent a brief time as a minor league ballplayer and bartender before entering the motion picture theater business. An innovator in the field, he is credited with inventing the concept of hanging a curtain in front of the projection screen, synchronized orchestral accompaniment, and multi-projector operation, and would develop and manage several New York theaters, including the Roxy Theater and Radio City Music Hall. During the First World War, Rothapfel returned to the Marine Corps as a Captain, using his theater knowledge to produce recruiting films.

Model 1855 Percussion Rifle-Musket manufactured at the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1858. The musket has the distinctive Maynard tape primer lock, long range rear sight and brass forearm tip. The lock plate is dated "1858" behind the hammer and marked: "U.S./HARPERS FERRY' in two lines ahead of it. The buttplate heel is stamped "U.S.". The left barrel flat is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks. The roman numeral "XI" and a five-pointed star are carved in the right side of the stock. The left side of the stock is crudely carved with the name: "JAMES/GARROIT". The musket is fitted with an Enfield pattern steel ramrod with slotted tip and a Confederate style canvas and leather sling. The Maynard tape primer magazine door and tape primer mechanism have been removed. The rear sight blade is missing. Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured 12,158 Model 1855 Rifle-Muskets between 1857 and 1861. The Model 1855 Percussion Rifle-Musket was the most advanced rifle musket available at the outbreak of the Civil War and it was used by the both Federal and Confederate armies throughout the war.

This is an example of a Model 1833 breech loading carbine manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut between 1834 and 1839. The Model 1833 Carbine is historically important as the earliest percussion and breech loading weapon officially adopted by the U.S. or any other government. The 52 caliber Hall carbines were carried by the 2nd U.S. Dragoons for their initial service in Florida and were later replaced with the Model 1836. A combination bayonet / ramrod was mounted in the forearm. The breech is released by a spur type latch mounted forward of the trigger guard. There is a small sliding catch to hold the latch closed. The barrel, receiver, trigger guard, barrel bands and buttplate were finished in brown lacquer and the breechblock and hammer were casehardened. The front, top of the breechblock is marked "U. S. / NORTH / MIDLtn. / CONN. / 18??". A sub-inspector's initials "NWP" are stamped on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight. Two finger ridges behind the trigger guard bow and a sling ring at the end of the trigger plate. One piece smooth walnut stock secured by two barrel bands, iron buttplate and implement compartment on the bottom

This Model 1863 Type I rifled musket has a blade front sight/bayonet lug and two leaf rear sight on a barrel marked with the "V P eagle head" proofs at the breech (left side). The lock plate is dated 1863 and has the eagle and shield motif next to "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". The eagle motif is repeated on the bolster. The barrel is also dated 1863. The three barrel bands are stamped "U" and with no visible "US" on the buttplate tang. The barrel bands correctly lack springs. Straight grip stock with a script "EJA" cartouche. It has the tulip head type ramrod.

Condition: Fine. The barrel has been cleaned at one time and now has a mottled gray patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth dark patina with a gray patina on the lower tang. The stock is also fine with some minor dings and scratches, along with a few slivers of wood missing from around the ramrod channel. Mechanically excellent.
