Rare Renaissance Era South German Close Helmet, ca. 1560

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 885)

Medium weight skull of one-piece construction with rigid comb, pierced at the lower base with a hole probably created at a later date for the attachment of a funerary crest. A later iron plume holder is attached by two iron rivets at the rear base of the crest. Five large audio vent holes at lower rear areas of skull. Right side of skull with several small dents as well as three small repaired holes consistent with period damage and repairs.  The pivoting two-piece visor with original spring-loaded latch is released via a replacement leather thong. This is typical of helmets constructed in Innsbruck during this era. It is a unique feature. The upper visor has two horizontal viewing slits. Lower visor is pierced on the right side with five separate vents with a cross pattern. The bevor has a small area of patched damage at the chin and is attached to the skull by a hook on the left side.  Ten iron rivets along the bottom of the bevor and skull once secured leathers to which a lining cap could be sewn. Single lames are present front and back, each attached with two iron rivets and would have had two further gorget lames front and back which are now absent. Overall, a desirable close helmet.

Condition:
Good as configured. Metal polished and showing various period repairs and minor alterations. Still, a very scarce armor close helmet.

Estimate: 7500.00-10500.00...more

Rare 19th Century Firearms Curiosa Ivory Vampire Killing Kit

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 885)

Extremely rare antique ivory vampire killing kit, consisting of an ornate ivory-mounted Christian cross integrating a steel, spring-loaded, .41 caliber single-shot percussion pistol, the center mounted with an ebony shield surmounted with a 8-pointed crown, the tips made from tiny semi-precious red stones. A ruby red five-pointed star adorns the center. The vampire pistol is contained in an ivory case, together with steel dagger blade which attaches to the end of the cross, an ivory cleaning rod, ivory powder bottle, and cap and ball supply. The entire case is made from fine elephant ivory and each element is engraved with letters representing the contents. According to consignor, this was reportedly one of four matching kits. By tradition, this example was brought back from Germany after WWII by one Sergeant Glen Pendelton who liberated it from a German museum in Berlin. A rare and very unique firearms curiosa. Size: 4-3/4" X 3-5/8" X 1-5/8".

Condition:
