Porcelain half doll with pink-tinted complexion depicts a nude lady with arms curved at the elbows and outstretched, elegantly curled fingers, head turned to the side, with sculpted grey hair arranged in chignon with ringlet curls at each ear and decorated with a coronet of roses; the doll is attached to her original oval dresser box decorated with silk flowers to match her hair decoration. Heavy porcelain half doll depicts an elegant lady in exuberant flowered bonnet, her head tilted to the side with brown curls that peek from beneath a very large bonnet with gold edging and flower-wreath of Dresden flowers circling the face, with large coral bow at the crown and forming a tie at her throat, sculpted and painted costume with puffed sleeves, grey fingerless gloves, and a green-collared low neckline. French Musical Automaton "The Juggling Clown" by Vichy 18,000/25,000

30" (76 cm.) A clown with highly-characterized papier-mache head is seated upon a wooden stool with one foot outstretched as though for balance, and his right hand clasping a wooden stick upon which he is juggling a ball. He has painted white clown complexion and painted clown decorations including one diamond-edged eye and a rosy nose tip, brown glass eyes, articulated eyelids, open mouth with painted teeth, wiry two-color clown hair, and wears his original diamond-patterned silk clown costume over carton torso, papier-mache legs and lower arms. When wound, he nods his head in a circular motion, then turns to the left while gesturing with his left hand as though to draw the attention of onlookers. Then, turning to the right, he performs his juggling act, moving his right arm side-to-side while the ball appears to move up and down on the stick. Throughout music plays, his tongue moves in and out in a whimsical happy manner, and his eyelids blink. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Vichy, Paris, circa 1900. Value Points: its size and complex motions indicate its luxury production from the prestige Vichy works, in highly-desirable state of originality....more

Two Early Rare Tinplate Mechanical Musical Clown Toys 1100/1600

Lot # 143 (Sale Order: 143 of 303)      

8 1/2" (22 cm.) w. 8".h. The amusing pair of mechanical clown toys depict mischievous antics, each on identically-styled tinplate stage with pierced holes for emanation of musical sound, and with hidden wind-up mechanism below. One depicts a clown with trombone riding on the back of another clown who has cymbals attached to the toes of his clown shoes, and the other depicts a fiddle-playing clown on a chair seated alongside a clown on a barrel. When wound, they each perform amusing actions while tinkling music plays. A bellows action allows the trombone clown and the barrel clown to bounce up and down, for example. Condition: the finish is completely original, albeit well worn, mechanism and music function well on both. Comments: circa, 1890. Value Points: the rarity of the two early toys is rivaled only by their charming actions, music, and unusual complicated mechanisms....more
