French Bisque Bebe Gigoteur by Jules Steiner 2000/2500

21" (53 cm.) Solid domed bisque head with round facial shape, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, dark eyeliner, rose-blushed eye shadow, feathered brows, shaded nostrils, open mouth with shaded lips, two rows of tiny porcelain teeth, unpierced ears, blonde mohair fleecy wig, carton torso containing mechanism, kid-over-metal hinge upper legs, composition lower legs, papier-mache arms, antique baby costume. Condition: generally excellent, lower legs not original, mechanism functions well. Comments: Jules Steiner's deposed Bebe Gigoteur, circa 1880, when wound, the doll moves its head side to side, cries "mama" and kicks its legs in a baby-like fashion. Value Points: signature doll of that important French firm, the popular doll was made for nearly two decades with variations in material and style, this being a fine early and large example....more

Musical Automaton "Girl Dancing on a Tightrope" attributed to Roullet & Decamops 5000/7500

Lot # 229 (Sale Order: 230 of 303)      

18" (46 cm.) A painted metal trapeze bar with fringe-decorated tightrope is arranged upon a rectangular wooden platform with red velvet fringed cover; posed on tiptoe on the tightrope is a petite bisque head doll with glass eyes, closed mouth, mohair wig, silk costume, holding a garland of flowers in her hands. When wound, the doll gracefully combines the skills of ballet dancing and tightrope walking, moving back and forth across the bar, on tiptoe, twirling and raising the garland up and down in a a graceful motion. Music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: attributed to Roullet et Decamps, circa 1900. Value Points: delightful theme whose charming motions are enhanced by the especially beautiful face of the doll....more

Rare French Musical Automaton "The Chinese Tea Server" by Leopold Lambert 7500/9500

Lot # 230 (Sale Order: 231 of 303)      

19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered box platform is a bisque-head lady with rich amber-tinted complexion, oval slender face, brown glass eyes, painted features, closed mouth with full lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, amber-tinted bisque forearms. When wound, she turns her head from side-to-side, lifts the tea pot she holds in her right hand to pour into the cup that she holds in her left hand, then offers the cup, music plays. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890; Lambert commissioned a special series of bisque heads from Jumeau that would highlight the theme of his automata; some of these heads were later created as bisque dolls by Jumeau (such as the 200 series), but others (including this one) were only used for the original commission purpose. Value Points: rare luxury salon automaton with splendid original silk costume and superb quality of bisque and painting of the unique face....more

Fine French Musical Automaton "La Mascotte" by Gustav Vichy 12,000/18,000

Lot # 232 (Sale Order: 233 of 303)      

23" (58 cm.) A bisque-head lady with brown glass paperweight eyes, lushly-painted lashes and brows, mauve-blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, bisque shoulder plate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. A wicker basket suspends from her shoulders and appears to support another wicker basket with lid (the second basket actually is attached by hidden metal rods to her torso). When wound, she turns her head, nods, and lifts the berries she holds in her left hand; meanwhile, the lid of the basket slowly arises and the little feathered bird within lifts his head and awakens. Condition: costume and bisque are excellent, music and mechanism function well except bird's chirp is weak and nodding mechanism need adjustment. Marks: 9 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: Gustav Vichy, Paris, circa 1885, the model was marketed as "La Mascotte" in reference to the 1880 French operetta "La Mascotte"; this example, with earlier Jumeau head, is a variation of #36 in this book, with earlier bisque head. Value Points: rare automaton with exquisite bisque face and fine original costume and presentation....more
