Italian Felt "Sam", Model 260, by Lenci with Brilliant Costume, Body Variation 9000/13,000

36" (91 cm.) Of ebony-black felt with pressed and painted facial features, swivel head, narrow side-glancing brown eyes, accented nostrils, red stitched and padded red lips, black curly mohair wig wrapped in a lime green felt turban decorated with embroidery and "jewels", slender black felt torso, jointed long slender black felt arms, and very elongated long black felt legs with jointed knees. Condition: near mint. Marks: Lenci (two original paper labels, one pencil noted "260"). Comments: Lenci, a standing version of the same model appeared in the 1924 catalog, also identified as model 260, and named "Sam", described as "The Sultan's Moorish Guard"; the 260 model was likely made for one or two years only. Value Points: the rarity of the model is rivaled by its pristine condition, and the extraordinary detail of costume, with vibrant appliques and embroidery on the green felt vest, sash, pants, slippers, and gloves, and with one original gilt-painted wooden earring, and a hand-carved wooden figural necklace....more

She is wearing an early linen princess-style dress with cotton cut-work and velvet edging, original matching undergarments, maroon knit stockings, shoes, and elegant velvet bonnet with bead trim at the back. She is wearing a fine black velvet dress with maroon silk insert and edging, lace collar and cuffs, silver buttons, antique undergarments, knit stockings, shoes, fine velvet and silk bonnet with large ribbon bows and bead edging. A bisque-head girl with splendid blue glass paperweight eyes, lushly-painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig with original braids and curls, carton torso, hinged hips, wire upper arms, composition hands, antique costume of patterned silk satin, lace-edged velvet, undergarments, knit stockings, maroon satin shoes, is daintily-seated with crossed legs on a fine gold-leaf decorated spindle chair, her knitting in her hands; the vignette arranged on a velvet-covered flat base. When wound, music plays and the girl nods her head forward and back as though examining her knitting, while her hands and forearms twist to and fro in a realistic knitting movement. Condition: generally excellent, movement and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 5 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1888. Included are ten cardboard-framed photographic images including city scenes, nature scenes, and vignettes of people, designed to be placed at window end and peered at through the eye hole. Each frame is labeled "Bedescope Brevete SGDG", and the box has the paper label of the luxury Paris toy store, Au Nain Bleu. Very good condition, a few images have some damage. Superb French Musical Automaton "La Mascotte with Singing Bird" by Gustav Vichy 12,000/18,000

A bisque-head doll with brown glass paperweight eyes, lushly-painted lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with beautifully-shaded and accented lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, cork pate, bisque shoulder plate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, and bisque forearms, is standing upon a wooden platform with gold crushed-velvet cover. She has a covered wicker basket attached to her side (by hidden rods which connect the mechanism), and is exquisitely costumed in rich velvet and silk with hand-painted designs, lace and silk pom-pom accents, silk bonnet and wooden shoes. When wound, two musical tunes play in sequence, while the girl lifts, turns and nods her head as though noticing the lid opening on the basket and the little bird awakening, rising, and lifting its head to chirp. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, professional restoration to one hand. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 7 (head). Comments: Gustav Vichy, Paris, 1885, the automaton was inspired by the 1880 operetta "La Mascotte" that captivated Paris during that era. Bettina, (La Mascotte) tells her lover Pippo in an Act I duet that she loves him almost as much as her cherished birds. All-Original French Musical Automaton "Flower-Seller with Surprises", Gustav Vichy 20,000/30,000

25" (64 cm.) A beautiful black-complexioned papier-mache lady with brown glass eyes, mohair lashes, painted brows, open mouth with two rows of teeth, dark mohair wig arranged under turban, carton torso and legs with bare feet, defined toes, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands, wearing her original elaborate silk and brocade costume with lace sleeves and elaborate embroidery, appears to be holding a large woven basket filled with garden wares, notably three large colorful flowers. The basket is actually attached to the mechanism in her torso. When wound, she turns and nods her head in a realistic manner as though calling out to passers-by, while her eyes blink open and closed. Then the basket reveals, in sequence, its three surprises. One-by-one, a "flower" opens to reveal, in turn, a papier-mache monkey with blinking glass eyes and chattering mouth, a bisque girl who dances and twirls about, and a papier-mache mouse which runs in circles over and over again. Two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885. Value Points: an outstanding example of the intricate automaton with 11 different animations, perfectly-preserved original finish, original costume, rare mohair lashes, and wonderful surprises....more

Condition: generally excellent, some typical light fading, blouse a tad dusty. Wonderful and Rare Italian Felt Celebrity Doll, "Bombita" by Lenci 900/1300

18" (46 cm.) Felt swivel head with very plump face, pressed and painted facial features, round brown side-glancing eyes with brown curly upper lashes, rounded nose, closed mouth, unusual black fleecy hair with shaped sideburns, jointed arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent, very slight costume fading. Comments: Lenci, the doll appeared in the 1925 Lenci catalog identified as #267 "Bombita", and costumed as a matador in bright red felt costume with metallic thread embroidery, red cape with velvet accent, white shirt, black tie, stockings, black leatherette shoes with red edging and heels, and a black cap that is elaborately-constructed. "Bombita" was the name given to the celebrated Spanish matadors Emilio and Ricardo Torres whose height of popularity was at the time of the doll's production. Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, brown side-glancing eyes with grey eye shadow and thick curly upper lashes, accented nostrils, plump cheeks and chin, closed mouth with pale accented lower lip, brunette mohair wig with long ringlet curls, jointing at shoulders and hips. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Lenci (paper tag on cape with model 109/46 indicated). Comments: Lenci, circa 1928, the doll appeared in the catalog with the name "Monica", wearing pink coral felt flapper dress with floral-tipped neck tie, organdy undergarments, socks, grey felt shoes with coral lining, coral cloche with a large cluster of bright felt flowers, and with grey great coat with capelet collar, coral felt ties, and a bright cluster of felt flowers decorating the pocket.
