French Automaton "Jester with Guitar" by Leopold Lambert 11,000/13,000

Seated upon a wooden pedestal seat is a paper-mache headed clown or jester with glass inset eyes, white complexion with painted clown features, white fluffy mohair wig, carton torso, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, slender shaped legs bent at knees, one leg crossing the other, wearing silk and velvet jester costume, arranged on velvet covered wooden base with attached LB key and pull-lever. When wound, music (two tunes) plays and six movements occur: turning head side to side, nodding, then upper torso also bending, strumming of guitar, tongue moving in and out, and left leg moving up and down as though in time to the music. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: LB (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, the automaton appeared in the Lambert catalog as #43 "Clown a la Guitare", circa 1890. Extremely Rare French Automaton "Piano Watteau" by Vichy w/Four Tunes 18,000/30,000

27" (69 cm.) lady seated. 38" overall. Arranged upon a wooden platform is a paper mache headed lady seated at an elegant pianoforte. The lady has glass eyes, closed mouth with a row of painted teeth in gentle smiling expression, original white mohair wig, carton body w/separate chest form, paper mache hands w/elegantly posed fingers, modeled bent knees w/legs posed as though tapping foot pedals. The pianoforte w/harp has cream painted finish w/gilded decorations comprising a lyre-shaped foot-pedal frame, floral garlands & gilded ormulu mounts including 5 cherub figures & sprays of roses & berries. There is a music sheet rack w/antique miniature music sheet "Nous N'irons Plus au Bois", and foot pedals. The Vichy key pull-lever are at the side of the piano, & when wound, a succession of motions occur: the lady turns her head from side to side, nods, moves both hands across the keys in a realistic manner, & breathes (chest movement) as though delighted with her performance. Four tunes play. Condition: mechanism & movement function well & are entirely original, pianoforte has been repainted long ago, the woman's face has craquelure & some retouch (and would best be professionally restored), wig original, antique costume as shown in original Vichy catalog. Comments: Vichy, circa 1895, the automaton appeared in the Vichy catalog described as "Piano Watteau" and w/Vichy depose indication. Few examples of the model were ever made, & it is exceptionally rare. Some provenance of this piece is known: in the late 1930's a Frenchman, name unknown, escaped Paris, taking w/him some family treasures including Faberge spoons & the Piano Watteau automaton. He later sold the automaton to Mr. Sullivan, attache to General McArthur, as a gift for his wife Ruth, & by the end of WWII the Pianist was located in Honolulu. It remained in storage for more than four decades until sold at auction in 1984 to Adrian & Donna Mathes where it has remained until this time. Estimate: 18,000/30,000...more

Automaton "Waltzing Lady and Gentleman" by Vichy with Two Tunes 12,000/16,000

13" (33 cm.) A bisque-headed couple are posed in each others arms, in formal dance position, each with blue glass eyes, beautifully painted facial features, carton torso, paper mache legs and metal hands on man, bisque forearms on woman. Each doll has its original white mohair wig in very elaborate coiffure, and is wearing its original blue and ivory cream silk ballroom costume in the 1790 style, the woman with original pearl necklace and earrings, and silk floral arrangement in hair. The woman fits upon a metal cone "skirt" that contains mechanism, and is hidden by her silk skirt. When wound, the dolls twirl about, pause, reverse, repeat, and meanwhile the entire piece glides along on three wheeled-base. Excellent condition, mechanism functions well, bisque heads perfect, some restoration to woman's fingers. Two tune paper label is on base indicating "La Jolie Parfum" and "L'Espana Valse". A paper note, handwritten in 1959 and attached to the metal cone tells the provenance of the automaton, detailing that in 1880 "mon grand-pere Jules Boissier" brought some dolls from Paris to his six year old daughter Caroline, and notes that the piece had passed down in the family, to Isabelle, to Jules and to Noel until then.
