Black Beaver Gentlemen’s Top Hat, by Herbert Johnson, Brooks Brothers Importer

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 7 of 341)

What a rare PA-estate find! Even better than Barry's find on a recent episode of STORAGE WARS because this one has the liner, label, AND its red silk hat box liner/protector! Circa 1890-1900 gentleman's top hat finely crafted by Herbert Johnson, 38 New Bond Street in London and retailed by Brooks Brothers at Madison Avenue & 44th Street, New York. Both in amazing condition, given age. Victorian-era plush black felted beaver fur top hat, with black wool hat band trim and silk grosgrain brim edging. Stitching at all intersections is near-flawless. Lined inside with white kid leather, which shows natural evidence of use, and clean ivory silk. The inside of the top hat has the initials H.D.W., which were likely that of the original or subsequent owners. Front and rear edges of brim show a few small wear spots: tears in grosgrain trim, largest about 1" at the front. The hat measures about 6-1/4" inches tall. This "Extra Quality" top hat is in excellent, clean, and wearable condition, with no odor. Red quilted silk storage piece, likely the outer box liner; leather tabs for lifting. A true beauty. *By bidding, you agree to Lot 0 statements and Auction Information & Special Terms of Sale....more
