Bowie Knife with Etched Blade

Lot # 356 (Sale Order: 6 of 323)      

Bowie knife with American eagle etched in blade, along with the slogans, "Americans Ask for Nothing But What is Right and Submit to Nothing That is Wrong" and "The United States the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave Protected by Noble & Brave Volunteers." The blade is sharp with darkened patina, and the etching is clear, with only minor abrasions. The knife has an ornate hollow ware cutlery handle. The brown leather sheath has a metal tip and shank and has an embossed design on the front. There are a few minor dents on the handle and metal parts, and much wear to the leather. It is a very attractive and historical item. Knife measures 12"; blade 6 1/2"; knife in sheath 12 1/2" long. [KL-2]...more

Papers relating to the Bell-Wether Mine near Jackson, Amador County, CA, circa 1896. Included is an original 7-page typescript carbon copy on thin paper of the Resume / The Bell-Wether Mine consisting of eight sections: Purchase of Property and Cost; Condition of Mine; Present Condition; Cost of Buildings to July 1, 1896; Future Operations; Necessities; Stock; and Control of Mine. Most of the stated exhibits in the resume also are present as separate documents: two letters re the mine (11pp & 3pp) from Superintendent George R. Adams; a 6-page report of an examination of the mine by the President and Secretary of the company; a 36-page detailed report of the mine, including various statements by knowledgeable parties; and two blue print maps of the mine and its location within the Mother Lode (the Kennedy Mine was its neighbor), with one of the maps duplicated on white stock. Also included is a copy of the Bell-Wether Mining Company's By-Laws and a List of Stockholders. All the documents appear to date from 1896. "California" Bowie Knife

This etched blade Bowie knife features an American eagle with a gold poke marked 10,000 in its beak, over a banner proclaiming, "California Bowie Knife / "A Californian Ask for Nothing That is Wrong" / "I Can Dig Gold from Quartz". The solid cutlery handle and guard appear to be nickel silver. The dark maroon leather sheath has a metal tip and shank and has golden embossed chasing outlines on both sides and a floret on the front. The blade is marked "Woodhead / Howard St / Sheffield" on the shank, and "VR / Warranted / Sheffield" on the opposite side. The blade has the usual patina, clear etching, and a slightly bumped tip. The sheath has worn areas, repairs to the leather, and dents on the tip. The frog button is missing. Blade measures 6 1/2"; and overall 12 3/4" long. [KL-05]...more

The fold-outs include a Plan of Bloomfield Tunnel and Gravel Mines owned by North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Co., Nevada Co., CA; Section through Bloomfield Tunnel; Map of the Deep Placer Mines of Smartsville / Yuba Co / Cal.; three different diagrams of portions of furnaces; Map showing the location and course, by instrumental survey, of 200 gold-mines in the slates of California (3 1/3" tear along one fold); and a chart detailing the General Features of the Gold-Ming Belt of California. Laid in loose is a 27 1/2" x 20 3/4" chart titled, "Tabular Exhibit of Veins and Mining in California," that has been removed from a publication (several tears along folds). The report includes an alphabetical index of "Mines, Mills, Works, Etc.", high and low prices of mining-stocks for 1874, and other great mining research information on western mines.
