Special Terms

1. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE. The following conditions of sale make up the entire terms and conditions on which items listed in our catalog, on the internet web site and addendum sheets will be offered for sale or sold by Rock Island Auction Company (known hereafter as “RIAC”). All bidders who participate by bidding in this auction agree to the terms and condition of sale and agree to be bound by same. Any notices, posted or oral during the sale, are also part of our condition of sale agreement. Acceptance of a bidder card or a bidder number constitutes acceptance of the following terms and conditions of sale. The purchaser’s rights and our respective rights and obligations hereunder are governed by Illinois law. By bidding at our auction whether in person or by agent, sealed bid, telephone bid, via the internet or other means, the buyer or bidder agree that the contract created by these conditions of sale is made and performed in the County of Rock Island, State of Illinois and further agrees that should any dispute arise from this contract the jurisdiction for contractual disputes is Rock Island County. Auctioneer is not responsible for any errors of the buyer including but not limited to the buyer bidding on the wrong lot. 2. BUYER’S PREMIUM AND SALES TAX. All bid prices “hammer prices” (means the price at which a lot is knocked down to the purchaser) will be subject to a buyer’s premium 20.5% payable by the purchaser. The buyer’s premium shall be reduced to 18% provided the payment is paid by cash or the equivalent of cash (cashier’s check, wire transfer, or approved personal check). If the account is settled by credit card, the buyer’s premium then shall be the standard 20.5%. This is not an aggregate percentage on the total items bid rather a per item percentage rate. The premium is added to your successful bid and the two together equal the total purchase price. Some items are exempt from Illinois sales tax and others may be subject to Illinois sales tax or local sales tax. The tax is computed on the total purchase price. To establish a tax free sale, a copy of a valid reseller’s permit or other instrument of information must be provided to our satisfaction establishing a sales tax exemption. Any purchaser claiming an exemption yet unable to provide proof will be required to pay the tax to us and seek a refund from the State of Illinois. Generally, all items shipped out of state are tax free sales. We have been authorized by the consignor to retain as part of our remuneration, the buyer’s premium payable by the purchaser. 3. METHOD OF PAYMENT. Auction sales are strictly for cash, cashier’s check or checks (with prior approval of the management), MasterCard, Visa or Discover. NOTE TO FOREIGN BUYERS: Method of payment will be U.S. currency, certified check drawn on an American bank or wire transfer. 4. TERMS OF PAYMENT. At the announcement of “SOLD”, the highest bidder will have purchased the offered lot. All sales are final at the fall of the Auctioneer’s hammer or at the announcement of “sold”. This purchase is subject to all the terms and conditions set forth herein. The purchaser assumes full responsibility thereof and if requested will sign a confirmation of the purchase. The purchaser further agrees to pay the purchase price, buyer’s premium and any applicable taxes. All items purchased by successful bidders must be paid for in full the day of sale. All property must be removed from our premises at the purchaser’s expense no later than 5:00 p.m. five days following the date of sale unless otherwise agreed. If the property is not removed, it may be transferred to a public warehouse for the purchaser at the purchaser’s risk and expense. Each purchaser at this auction grants us a security in the property purchased. We may retain as collateral security for the purchaser’s obligations to us any of the purchaser’s property and all monies held or received by us. We may apply against such obligations monies held or received by us for the account of, or owing to, the purchaser. We retain all rights of a secured party under the Illinois Commercial Code. Whenever the purchaser pays only a part of the total price for one or more lots purchased, we may apply such payments, at our sole discretion, to the lot or lots we choose. Payment will not be deemed made in full until we have collected all amounts due in cash on good funds (by our definition). If the conditions of sale are not complied with, in addition to remedies available to us and the consignor by law, we hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, 15% buyers premium, and applicable sales tax, we at our option may either (1) cancel the sale, retain as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or (2) resell the property either publicly or privately, and in such an event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs and expenses of both sales and our commission at our standard rates. The purchaser is also responsible for all other charges due hereunder attorney’s fees and incidental damages, etc. 5. INTEREST AND DEFAULT. Payment is due upon receipt. If the buyer’s invoice is not paid in full within 15 days of the auction, RIAC has the right and will charge the buyer’s credit card of record on file for the total invoice amount. Interest will be charged on all balances not paid at the rate of 1-1/2% (18% APR) effective 15 days from the date of purchase/auction. Should the buyer not comply with any of the Terms and Conditions of Sale, the damage recoverable from the defaulter shall include any loss arising on the resale of the lot, together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales, interest from the date of the sale as well as any legal or collection fees incurred. RIAC shall hold any money deposited in partial payment on account of any liability of the defaulted item and will apply it at the sole discretion of RIAC to the outstanding debt. 6. WITHDRAWAL. We reserve the right to withdraw any property prior to sale. 7. PROTESTS, DISPUTES AND THE AUCTIONEER. We reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder, acknowledged by the auctioneer, will be the purchaser. The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion as to the disposition of any dispute including the re-offer and resale of any article in dispute. Any dispute after the sale our records will be deemed conclusive in all respects. 8. If we are prevented by fire, theft, or any other reason from delivering any property to the purchaser, our liability shall be limited to the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser and shall in no event include any incidental or consequential damages. 9. GUARANTEE. All property offered for sale is as is, where is. All sales are final. There will be no refunds and no exchanges. Rock Island Auction does not guarantee or make warranties on any lot sold. The bold headline of the description is the only written statement Rock Island Auction Company will guarantee as correct. Descriptions in the catalog are opinion. They are written as an aid to potential bidders. We acknowledge that there may be errors in what is written beyond the bold headline description. We recommend you to personally view any item you bid on or have an acknowledged expert view the item. Statements starting with the word condition are opinions, not statement of fact or guarantees. If a dispute about a lot arises it is the buyer’s responsibility to provide a written statement by an acknowledged qualified expert within 30 days after the auction that the bold headline is in fact incorrect. If the expert’s statement is indeed correct Rock Island Auction Company will make a full refund upon return of merchandise. Providing the merchandise is returned in the same condition it was received. We must again reiterate the guarantee is only on the bold headline of the description and Rock Island Auction Company will only honor this guarantee within 30 days of an Auction. This right to return an item purchased at an auction shall be expressly limited to situations where errors occurred in the bold headline description of an auction item and such 30-day return provision shall not apply to a return of an auction item for any other reason. Rock Island Auction Company will have no further obligation including no refunds or returns will be accepted if the above conditions are not met. Items offered for sale as described in the catalog or any bill of sale, advertisement, addendum sheet, or elsewhere as to authorship, period, culture, source, origin, measurement, quality, rarity, provenance, importance, exhibition, physical condition are qualified statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. No employee of Rock Island Auction Company or any person purporting to act on behalf of Rock Island Auction Company is authorized to make on our behalf or that of the consignor, any representation or warranty, oral or written, with respect to any lot or item for sale. 10. The Conditions of Sale shall bind the successors and assigns of all bidders and purchasers and inure to the benefit of our successors and assigns. No waiver, amendment or modification of the terms hereof (other than posted notices or oral announcements during the sale) shall bind us unless specifically stated in writing signed by us. If any part of these Conditions of Sale is for any reason invalid or unenforceable, the rest shall remain valid and enforceable. 11. RESERVES. Some items in this auction may be subject to reserve (the confidential minimum price below which the lot will not be sold). If a lot is offered with a reserve, we may implement that reserve by bidding on behalf of the consignor. No reserve will be allowed higher than the high estimate and in many cases the reserve is lower than the low estimate. This bidding will not generally constitute opening bidding. If RIAC declares an opening bid and no advance to that bid is received we will pass the item. However once bidding is opened we will bid on behalf of the consignor to reach the reserve price. Nominal bids – the auctioneer may reject nominal bids, small opening bids or very nominal advances made with the purpose of disparaging an item. If a lot fails to achieve a bid equal to or exceeding 25 - 30% of the low estimate, the item may be passed and not sold and may not be re-offered until a later sale this is at the sole discretion of the auctioneer and an auctioneer may in fact sell the item. If we have an interest in an offered lot and the proceeds there from other than our commission, we may bid therefore to protect such interest. Items which are not reserved are sold at the auctioneer’s discretion. 12. Consignors are not allowed to bid on their own merchandise nor have any agent bid on their behalf. If the Auctioneer recognizes such bidding or is advised of same, the Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any or all items consigned by the offending consignor, no exceptions. ABSENTEE BIDDING. As a service to anyone wishing to place bids in advance of the sale we may accept bids to bid on a potential bidders behalf at our own discretion by telephone or sealed bid using the forms we provide. A Sealed Bid must be received and credit approved in advance of sale date. It is the Bidders responsibility to establish credit before bidding, or we will accept a 15% deposit in the amount of the total bids. (Deposits will be returned within ten (10) days after sale, if not successful). A Sealed Bid form is enclosed in the back of the catalog. Bids may also be faxed to (309)797-1655. Additionally on-line bidding is available on our website. Buyers acknowledge by bidding absentee via mail, e-mail, telephone, through internet providers, or any other absentee means (not in person bidding) no fiduciary duty exist between the bidder and RIAC. The buyer acknowledges RIAC has a financial interest in all items offered for sale. The buyer acknowledges that there may be a conflict of interest in that RIAC may have an interest in items beyond the seller’s commission and buyer’s premium. In fact RIAC may have offered a guaranteed amount to a particular consignor or may actually have an ownership interest in an item offered for sale. Buyer acknowledges that RIAC has fiduciary duty to sellers and not the buyers. Any absentee bid is executed as if the bidder was actually present and bidding themselves. RIAC will execute bids in a manner such that they will attempt to prevail at the lowest bid possible. We assume no responsibility for failure to execute telephone, sealed, or website/online bids for any reason whatsoever. In order to expedite notification of your bidding all clients with a RIAC web account will be notified via email that you were successful and to check your account. A form is provided for you there to complete and return to us in regards to shipping instructions and method of payment. Once we receive the form we then follow up with a phone call to confirm all information is correct, upon receiving payment and any applicable licensing we process your order. If you do not have a web account with us we will call you regarding payment and shipping instructions and follow up with an invoice in the mail. 14. TELEPHONE BIDDING. In order to bid on a lot over the telephone at the time it is being sold you must contact us in advance to make arrangements. Generally if you contact us by 2 p.m. the day preceding the sale we will have plenty of time to process your Information. Any bids received later than this date risk being not executed. The day of the sale that you have lot(s) to bid on a representative of RIAC will contact you prior to your lot(s) going up for sale and familiarize themselves with you. Telephone Bids may be faxed to (309)797-1655 or they can be submitted through our online service. “Cover-Me Bids”: As a Telephone Bidder be aware that there is the risk of us not being able to reach you. Therefore you may want to consider allowing your phone representative to execute bidding on your behalf. At the time of arranging for your phone bids simply give amounts that you are willing to go to on each lot in the event we are unable to reach you. This amount is only utilized if you are not on the phone with your representative. Assuming you are reached via telephone, they will rely on your verbal instructions only. “Cover-me bids” are not mandatory, you can place them at your discretion; they are simply a safety net in case you cannot be reached in time or not at all. On line bidding is available through third party providers. Potential bidders are informed those services charge an additional buyers premium above and beyond the premium charged by RIAC. 15. FIREARMS LAWS. All post - 1898 firearms must be registered in compliance with Federal and Illinois State Law. Buyers of post - 1898 firearms must complete state and federal registrations forms at Rock Island Auction Company, 7819 42nd Street West, Rock Island, IL 61201, unless otherwise specified. A 3-day waiting period is mandatory for modern handguns, a 24-hour waiting period on modern long arms. Dealers and out-of-state buyers must have in their possession on the day of sale, signed copies of their Federal Firearms License in order to accept same-day delivery of modern weapons. Buyers who act as agents for FFL dealers must have a letter of agency as well as a signed copy of the dealers Federal Firearms License (FFL). 16. CLASS 3. All firearms designated as Class 3 must be registered in compliance with the NFA registry. A $200 federal tax payment is required each time a functional NFA firearm is transferred to or from a private owner. This fee as well as full purchase payment is due at time of purchase in order to process the paperwork. The new owner of the Class 3 firearm will be required to complete 3 forms - 1) ATF Form 4, 2) fingerprint card, 3) ATF form 5330.20 Certificate of Compliance. These forms will be provided to you by Rock Island Auction Company. Note: if state of local law requires a permit or license to purchase, possess, or receive NFA firearms, a copy of the transferee’s (buyer) permit or license must accompany the application. Rock Island Auction Company then mails the paperwork for the Federal Transfer Tax to BATFE. The BATFE says that it can take up to 90 days for approval. We will receive back one of the Form 4’s (they are sent in duplicate) with a Federal Tax Stamp attached to it. This is given to the new owner when he/she picks up the NFA firearm. No further tax is due. The following states do not allow individuals to own machine guns: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York, Rhode Island. SPECIAL NOTE: If you are an SOT (Special Occupation Tax) payer (Class 3 dealer) you are able to transfer functional NFA firearms to or from other SOT payers and government agencies with BATFE approval, but without having to pay a transfer tax. 17. Rock Island Auction Company makes no warranties or representations whatsoever and no employee or consultant of Rock Island Auction Company has the authority to do otherwise, concerning the operation of firing condition, fitness for use, safety to store, or reliability, of any firearm, ammunition, or parts. Use of any firearm or ammunition purchased at Rock Island Auction Company is entirely at the user’s risk. Rock Island Auction Company offers for sale the lots as “collector” lots only. We strongly recommend that all weapons, ammunition, etc. purchased at auction be examined by a competent gunsmith. Rock Island Auction Company expressly disclaims any liability whatsoever for accident, injury or damage resulting to any person from the storage or subsequent use of any such lot. 18. All delivery, shipping and storage charges must be paid by the successful bidder prior to delivery of the firearm. SHIPPING. If packing and handling of purchased lots is done by Rock Island Auction Company, it is done at the entire risk of the purchaser. All items must have shipping insurance; this insurance is mandatory. RIAC will not charge any labor charges for shipping. We are not liable for any acts of omission in packaging or shipping. Purchased lots handled by outside carriers or packers including those we may have recommended such carriers or packers may carry their own insurance and any claims for losses or damages should be addressed directly to them. We will arrange for packing and shipping at our earliest possible convenience. We will attempt to ship as soon as possible, however, due to our high volume of absentee bids shipping can take up to two weeks after full payment is received. In the case of crating or any exceptional packaging, the buyer will be charged our cost from outside agents. Buyer pays shipping, packing materials, and insurance charges. The shipping of any purchased items outside of the United States is hereby classified as “foreign export”. All foreign export is the sole responsibility of the purchasing buyer. DISPUTES UNDER THIS CONTRACT Buyer and RIAC agree to mediate any dispute or claim arising between them resulting from the buyer participating in the auction or any resulting transaction. Furthermore the buyer and RIAC agree should Mediation be necessary that Mediation fees if any will borne equally by the parties. Buyer and RIAC are required under the terms and condition of sale to enter into Mediation before arbitration or any court action. Should a party commence legal action other than Mediation without giving written notice to the other party that party will not be entitled to recover attorney’s fees even if they would otherwise be allowed to that party in the action[ you should require mediation or arbitration prior to filing any law suit ] All. All mediation, arbitration and court proceedings, whether in state or federal court, shall be filed and conducted solely within Rock Island County, State of Illinois, and not in any other jurisdiction. Should Mediation not settle the dispute between the parties the buyer and RIAC agree that any dispute, claim in law or equity resulting from the participation in the auction or any resulting transaction shall be settled utilizing neutral binding arbitration utilizing the standards of American Arbitration Association and must be initiated and carried out in Rock Island County state of Illinois. Any bidder or actual buyer agree the election of restricting any and all claims to Arbitration is a voluntary decision and evidenced by participation in the auction. The buyer states “I have read the terms and conditions of sale and by my participation in this sale I agree all disputes arising out of my participation will be first submitted to Mediation, and if Mediation is not successful in resolving the dispute I then submit to neutral binding Arbitration with RIAC and any other entity under this contract. No lawsuit shall be filed until a person has in good faith completed all Mediation and Arbitration proceedings as required hereunder. Limitation of Liability. Except as expressly provided above, all property is sold “as is”. Rock Island Auction Company nor the consignor makes any representation or warranty, express or implied, as to the title, merchantability, fitness or condition of the property or as to the correctness of description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or period of the property or as to whether the purchaser acquires any copyrights or other intellectual property rights in lots sold or as to whether a work of art is subject to the artist’s moral rights or other residual rights of the artist. Exceptional Civil War Production New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Lever Action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in July 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and brass buttplate with blue octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer and loading lever have a color casehardened finish. The straight grain black walnut stock has an oil finish. The barrel has the later style square back nickel-silver front sight blade and dovetail mounted folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a center notch marked "900" and sight bar retaining screw at the top of the leaf. The magazine has the larger second style brass follower. The receiver is the second pattern which lacks the rear sight dovetail which was eliminated at about serial number 3,100 (September 1863). The rifle has the second style brass buttplate with pointed heel. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door and the trap contains the correct four piece jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip and steel eyelet introduced around serial number 4,000. The left side of the stock and barrel are fitted with a sling swivel and a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN.CT.". The legend is the later, larger style with all serif letters in the second line. The rifle serial number, "6040" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the left side of the lower receiver rail, in the upper stock inlet and on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw. All of the visible serial numbers match. The serial number is correctly not stamped on the late style cap-head buttplate and tang screws. The "H" inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch. What appear to be the script initials "C C C" are very lightly scratched in the right side of the stock.

Condition: Extremely fine overall. This rifle is exceptional with only very minor handling wear. The barrel and magazine retain 80% plus of the original blue finish. The balance of the blue has aged to a very attractive plum patina and retains the original bright finish in protected areas. The barrel edges and markings are sharp. The only significant wear is four small spots of pitting on the top of the barrel between the legend and the rear sight. The rear sight is very fine and has much of the original niter blue finish in protected areas. The exceptional brass receiver and buttplate have a mellow and very attractive unpolished patina. The side plate joints on the receiver are perfect. Large amounts of the original blue finish are present on the bolt and the hammer has nearly all of the case colors intact. The case colors on the lever have aged to a very attractive plum brown patina. The stock is excellent with all of the original oil finish and minimal handling or storage marks. Most of the case colors are present on the sling swivel. The screws are very good and the screw shanks retain most of the original niter blue finish. Henry rifles typically saw hard use and are rarely encountered with any original finish. This rifle is one of the finest examples of Civil War production, Henry rifle ever offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Company. It would be extremely difficult to ever upgrade this exceptional Henry rifle.

Spectacular Documented J Ulrich Signed Factory Panel Scene Engraved Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 189

This is a spectacular, never offered to collectors, new find Deluxe Panel Scene Ulrich Factory engrave gold inlaid Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Rifle that was manufactured in 1901. The rifle was engraved by Master Winchester Engraver John Ulrich and signed "J. ULRICH" in tiny letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. This rifle features deluxe Winchester "No. 4 Engraving" and "Style D" carving and checkering on the stock and forearm. The left side of the receiver is engraved with a highly detailed game scene that depicts a hunter taking two elk and the right side of the receiver is engraved with a solitary grizzly bear. The receiver, loading lever link, takedown collar, barrel, forearm cap and buttplate heel are inlaid with gold bands and borders. The loading lever, hammer and screw heads are all engraved. A Model 1894 rifle with identical engraving and stock carving and checkering was illustrated and described on pages 10-11 of the 1897 edition of the Winchester catalogue "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS". Pages 10-11 of "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" are reproduced on page 214 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle serial number 475011 with No. 4 engraving and Style D carving and checkering and identical game scenes is illustrated on page 246 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING". Identical engraving, inlays and carving on Model 1894 serial number 325531 is shown on page 421 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. This rifle, serial number 266180, has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The loading lever, hammer and crescent buttplate have a color case-hardened finish. The loading gate is niter blued. The highly figured carved walnut pistol grip stock and forearm have a high polish 'piano' finish. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21 1894" ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" between the rear sight and the take-down collar. Oval WINCHESTER "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top barrel flat and the top of the receiver. The caliber "32 W.S." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the receiver in an engraved scroll and border panel. The serial number, "266180" is roll-stamped on the underside of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1894/WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The inside of the rear sight elevator is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REP. ARMS CO." over patent information in four lines. The included factory letter confirms rifle takedown configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, fancy pistol grip stock with carved D pattern and graduated peep and beach sights. The rifle was received in the warehouse on December 23, 1905 and shipped from the warehouse on December 23, 1905 on order number 37912.

Condition: Excellent plus. The rifle retains 95% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish on the receiver and barrel assembly. The only significant finish wear is on the heel and face of the buttplate which have light pitting and some scattered surface discoloration. All of the other components have half of the original case-hardened finish and show minimal wear. The magazine tube and barrel take-down collar are nearly completely free of the take-down scuff marks usually found on those components. The flawlessly executed engraving and game scenes are crisp and deep. All of the markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. The stock and forearm have flawless checkering and relief carving. At least 98% of the high polish piano finish is present on the stock and forearm; wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. Scarce New Haven Arms Co., Engraved, Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

This is an example of a Volcanic Carbine that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., c. 1860. The carbine has a 16 1/2-inch octagon barrel with integral magazine. The barrel has a blue finish and is fitted with a brass post front sight blade. A wheel adjustable rear sight is dovetail mounted on the receiver. The carbine has a brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The buttplate and receiver are engraved with factory open scroll engraving in panels with scalloped borders and have a silver-plated finish. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The straight grain walnut stock has a high polish piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the modified one-line legend "PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14.1854" used on New Haven Arms Volcanic rifles and pistols after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., in April 1857 and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "252" is stamped on the right side of the loading lever. The innovative Volcanic repeating arms featured a self-contained "rocket ball" cartridge, integral magazine and self-cocking mechanism and were the most advanced firearm manufactured prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War. These rare and historically significant firearms served as the basis for the Henry and Winchester lever action rifles and established Oliver Winchester as a firearms manufacturer. Deluxe silver-plated and factory engraved Volcanic carbines like this example are scarce.

Fine New Haven Arms Volcanic Pocket Pistol

Barrel top is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB 14, 1854" indicating that the pistol was manufactured after Volcanic's reorganization in April 1857 and the formation of the New Haven Arms Company. The company was formed to continue production of the former Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. These pistols were produced in 30 caliber and used the same basic frame as the original Volcanic. The serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel and the matching number is stamped on the inside of each panel. The pistol had a blue barrel, casehardened lever and trigger with a brass frame, pinched blade front sight and dovetailed fixed iron rear sight. Fitted with two-piece smooth varnished walnut grips. Production of these scarce pistols ran from 1857 to 1860.

The rifle has a blue barrel, bolt and loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and steel shotgun buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm have a highly polished finish. The forearm and pistol grip have the popular Winchester "Style H" checkering. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight, the left rear flat is marked with the two line nickel steel/smokeless powder marking and the top flat at the breech is marked "30 W.C.F.". The left rear upper flat is marked with a London provisional proof followed by ".300" (upside down), and there is a "crown/V" proof on the left side of the receiver ring. The serial number is marked on the bottom front of the receiver. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman combination folding globe sight and a two leaf folding rear sight. There is a tang mounted short range Lyman cup disc peep sight. Blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate. There is a hard rubber Winchester grip cap on the stock. Rare Winchester Model 1885 "International Match" High Wall Target Rifle with Factory Letter

This rifle is one of the very few Model 1885 Winchester High Wall International Match Target rifles manufactured. In the 1870s, from the start of the Creedmoor Target matches and on up through the present day Camp Perry National Matches, the United States has been a country which has been heavily involved in and fully supported the sport of high power target shooting. These events have been fully supported by many of the major gun companies in the U.S. and this rifle is a beautiful example of just such an effort as pioneered by the Winchester Firearms Company and which just happened to coincide with the 1909 Camp Perry National Matches. These rifles and the concept of International Rifle Matches were conceived by A.L. Laudensack, a noted High Power rifle shooter and a Winchester Engineer during the early 1900s. Obviously from his standpoint, only the best, most stable rifle design of the time would work, that being the super strong, and stable Model 1885 Winchester Single Shot High Wall rifle. These International Match rifles can directly trace their origin and designs to A.L. Laudensack. These rifles have certain features that have been found and documented on the few surviving samples and are detailed on pages 164 to 169 of the book "The Winchester Single Shot" by John Campbell. It is noted that approximately 30 but no more than 50 of these rifles were manufactured. The basic features found on each rifle are; they are chambered for the new 30 caliber rimless cartridge of 1906, each one has a barrel length of approximately 30 inches, they have a distinctive short forend with finger grooves on each side that has an integral palm rest on the underside of the forend (remember these were shot off-hand) with the cork cover on the bottom, a hand guard that covers the barrel from the barrel band to the receiver ring, with the metal clips on the underside, a 1902 Krag style rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation with either a Winchester Wind-Gauge or Lyman Globe front sight, a Winchester close-coupled double set trigger, straight gripped shotgun butt walnut stock with a flat checkered steel buttplate, the unique hammer Interlock feature which prevents the rifle from being cocked unless the interlock mechanism is depressed and the hammer placed at half-cock and which automatically cocks the rifle upon closing the breech, and the patented F.F. Burton extractor system (as identified by the large screw head on the left side of the receiver) for the rimless 30-06 cartridge. Each rifle in this group is of the late coil spring design with a fixed barrel assembly (non-takedown). Some of the rifles also exhibited unique features or changes based on the personal likes of each shooter. This rifle is accompanied by a Winchester factory letter dated December 1984 that indicates this rifle was shipped out on August 18, 1913. It states that it was built as an original International Match High Wall Target rifle with the correct 30 Rim Caliber in 1906, 30 inch, #3 round barrel, nickel steel action, shotgun butt, and set trigger. The letter also states that is has the same style cork forend as found on the "Laudensack rifle" old style hammer fly, with front sight thumb screw to be cut off and slotted for a screw driver, targeted at 200 yards and target sent. Two things should be noted on this rifle; one) the cork palm rest is the correct original brown version that matches the forend exactly as pictured on page 165 of the noted reference and also the original Winchester Windage front sight has been removed and replaced with a later Redfield Globe front sight, but this can be easily corrected to restore it back to it's original configuration. We did not remove the handguard, however we anticipate it fully conforms to the markings in the reference. The bottom of the barrel is marked "3" and "F, 3, 1906, 4, VP in an oval, MNS, 1 in a triangle, C" at the breech end.

The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. The rifle has a full blue finish with the exception of the color casehardened hammer and loading lever. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. Excellent Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action Musket with Socket Bayonet

This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Musket that was manufactured in 1903. This musket was part of a lot of over 700 muskets in the 560,000-571,000 serial number range that were shipped to Central America in September 1903. In the 1950s a number of these muskets were discovered in their original crates and were returned to the United States in unfired condition. The musket has the distinctive 30 inch round barrel with full-length forearm and three barrel bands. The barrel has a block front sight that serves as a bayonet lug and a military style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The Third Style frame has an integral dust cover guide and a dust cover with serrated edges. The stock has a carbine-style buttplate with sliding brass trap door. Sling swivels are mounted on the middle barrel band and the stock. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver and dust cover have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm are oil-finished. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED. MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "44 CAL." is stamped in script on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. "- MODEL. 1873-" is roll-stamped in fancy letters on the upper tang with foliate devices on either end of the marking. The serial number, "570121B" is stamped in script on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The musket is complete with the four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod in the butt trap and is fitted with a WWI issue web Kerr Sling. The socket bayonet is finished bright and has an 18-inch angular blade. The bayonet is not marked.

Ulrich (rear of the trigger and numerous times on the face of receiver under forearm) and features a gold-plated brass receiver, forearm cap and crescent buttplate, blue octagon barrel and full length magazine and casehardened hammer and lever. The stock and forearm are highly figured fancy grain walnut. The stock and forearm cap are fitted with factory sling swivels. The barrel has a dovetail mounted sporting front sight with nickel-silver blade and an early Henry style folding leaf rear sight with rounded top and 900 yard center notch. The buttplate has a hinged trap door and the butt trap contains a four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S -IMPROVEMENT- PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16 1860". The serial number "79868" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and enclosed in an engraved banner. The engraver's signature "C.F. ULRICH" with a rectangular border is stamped in tiny letters on the lower tang immediately behind the trigger. Additional "C.F. ULRICH" stampings are found on the side of the upper tang under the stock and on the breech face of the receiver. "OXX" is stamped on the lower tang under the stock. This rifle is illustrated and described in detail on page 111 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The rifle has Winchester Style One factory engraving and the receiver has extensive intricate scroll engraving with two scenes on either side of the receiver and several animals and figures partially concealed in the delicate scrollwork. The central scene on the left side plate depicts a native child being attacked (and eaten) by a crocodile while two other natives watch helplessly. Concealed in the engraving in front of the side plate is a hunter with a rifle and hound. Behind the side plate is a man with a bucket and a saddled horse. A smaller scene on the left side of the receiver depicts two deer grazing under a tree. The right side plate is engraved with a hunting scene that depicts two hounds standing over a fallen buck with a hunter in the distant background. A charging bison and a standing grizzly are concealed in the scrollwork behind the side plate and a panther crouches over the loading gate in the scrollwork in front of the side plate. A smaller game scene on the forward portion of the receiver depicts a buck and doe. In addition to the game scenes on the receiver, the upper and lower tang, underside of the receiver, cartridge elevator, buttplate heel and forearm cap are all engraved with scrollwork or geometric designs. This rifle represents some of Conrad F. Ulrich's most detailed and best known engraving.

Condition: Good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth deep brown patina with light edge wear. The barrel markings are light but legible. The receiver retains traces of the gold-plated finish in protected areas. The forward portion of the frame has been battered possible by a vise. The balance of the receiver and the brass forearm cap and buttplate, have a very attractive untouched patina. The intricate highly detailed engraving on the receiver, forearm cap and buttplate remains sharp. Traces of the casehardened finish are present on the hammer and lever. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm show moderate handling wear with the left top side of forearm having been professionally repaired (splicing a piece in). There is a hairline crack on both sides of the stock that runs from the toe of the buttplate about half-way to the sling swivel. This is an exceptional example of a Conrad Ulrich signed and panel scene engraved Winchester Model 1866 Rifle that features some of the best examples of Ulrich's unique engraving.

Scarce Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Rifle with 20 Inch Round Barrel

This rare Winchester Model 1886 rifle was manufactured in 1906 and has a rare combination of special order features and is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter describes it as a rifle .33 caliber, 20 inch round barrel, plain trigger, plain pistol grip, plain checkered stock, Lyman combination front and Lyman rear sights, 1/2 magazine and rifle butt. The letter states that the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 1, 1906 with one other arm to order number 74,254. The top of the barrel is stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885." ahead of the rear sight, the left side is marked "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" at the rear and the caliber marking "33 W.C.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman folding combination front sight with ivory bead and a sporting style rear sight on the barrel and a folding Lyman combination tang peep sight on the receiver tang. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver at the breech. The Winchester 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger along with the serial number "139728". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the assembly number "272OFC" and the stock and buttplate are stamped with matching "272" assembly marks. Blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The select walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have Style I checkering with a single checkered diamond under the forearm and a single checkered panel on either side of the pistol grip. The pistol grip has a hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". Winchester Model 1886 rifles with short barrels and other special order features are very rare.

The stock and forearm both remain very fine. The checkered panels have light-moderate handling wear and there are several minor handling marks on the stock. Exceptional Special Order Deluxe Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Cody Letter

This is an excellent example of a very early original Deluxe Special Order Model 1873 rifle. It is accompanied by a Cody Museum record fact sheet supporting the configuration of this rifle, showing shipment in September 1879 under special order #16504. This is a Second Model with the desirable "Thumb Print" dust cover and rail secured by two screws. The rifle is equipped with the following special order features; 1) half-round, half-octagon barrel, 2) half length magazine, 3) semi fancy checkered wood, 4) pistol grip stock, 5) sling swivels and 6) a single set trigger. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866 OCTOBER 16, 1860-" ahead of the rear sight and there are no caliber markings on the barrel which is correct for these early production rifles. There was no need to mark the caliber on these early models due to the 32 and 38 caliber rounds not having been developed yet. The upper tang has the second pattern markings of only "MODEL 1873" in script and it is correctly drilled for a tang sight, and the serial number is marked on the lower tang directly behind the lever latch. The left side lower tang under the wood is stamped with the assembly number "183" and the same number also appears inside the top tang channel of the buttstock and inside the toe of the buttplate. The stock has a nice dark walnut look in the pistol grip area with a little more grain showing on the right side, and closely matching forend with casehardened end cap and original Ebony insert in the pistol grip. The sling swivels are fitted on the underside of the buttstock and the forend cap. It has the standard Winchester blue steel parts with the casehardened receiver, loading lever, hammer, forend cap and buttplate.

The barrel retains 90% of the original bright blue finish with wear on the edge and high spots, with streaks thinning with a nice smooth brown patina, and some scattered minor spotting. The loading gate and trigger retain almost all of the original bright niter blue finish. The receiver retains 70% of the original bright case colors with the balance fading and turning a silver gray patina. The loading lever retains 80% original case colors with some thinning on the bottom of the lever loop and smooth gray on the contact areas. The hammer shows 90% bright colors showing some thinning and friction rubs on the right side, the buttplate has 75% of the dark case colors with the balance turning a smooth gray patina and the forend cap retains 95% of the original vivid case colors. With the exception of some minor pressure marring on the forearm behind the forend cap, the wood is also excellent with a large 1 inch scratch on the right side butt just forward of the buttplate with some minor handling marks overall. Mechanically the rifle is crisp with an excellent bore. An exceptional original early Special Order Deluxe Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle.

Excellent Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a Winchester Third Model carbine that was manufactured in 1881. The carbine has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, barrel bands and receiver with casehardened lever, hammer and carbine style buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut. The carbine has a round barrel with steel block style front sight, dovetail mounted adjustable folding leaf rear sight and second style upper barrel band. The magazine has the second style cap secured by a screw. The Third Model receiver has an integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The butt plate has a sliding brass trap. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The upper tang is stamped "{ MODEL 1873}" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number, "91624A" is stamped in script letters on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Model 1873 carbines were utility weapons that typically saw hard service and are rarely found with any original finish. This is an outstanding original example of a Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Carbine that was manufactured in 1881 and would be a fine addition to any advanced collection of Winchester lever action rifles.

This Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle was manufactured in 1882. The rifle has a blade front sight, adjustable buckhorn rear sight and a full length magazine tube. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "156601" is stamped on the lower tang. The straight grip stock and forearm are oil finished and the buttstock is fitted with a late production Fourth Model steel crescent buttplate with a compartment (cleaning rod not included). The Model 1866 Winchester Rifle was essentially a Henry Rifle with improvements such as the modified magazine with the side loading gate, and new walnut forearm, which eliminated the primary defects in the Henry rifle and created a lever action rifle that has been associated with the name "Winchester", and the opening of the Western frontier.

Flat Mint Documented One of Five Special Order Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Winder Takedown Musket

Manufactured 1918 this is a mint example of a rare special order Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Winder Takedown Musket. The included factory letter confirms the takedown musket configuration, caliber, 30 inch No. 1 barrel and 44-A rear sight. The rifle was received in the warehouse on January 17, 1818 and shipped from the warehouse on January 22, 1918. The letter also states "the Winchester Archives indicates that only five arms of this type were made." The rifle is equipped with a standard blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The left side of barrel is marked with the two line Winchester address/patent dates and the caliber designation "22 SHORT" at the breech. The Winchester oval proof is marked on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The three line Winchester patent date, trade mark is stamped on the upper tang. Extraordinary Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Hanging Tag Instructions a

The carbine comes with the original hanging tag "Information and Instructions", a copy of the book "Winchester An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson, a copy of the 1921 Winchester catalog #82 and a nicely frame and matted Winchester advertising print of a cowboy on horseback with a Model 1895 and a bear. The frame is 24 1/2 inches by 31 inches.

Exceptional and Extremely Rare Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter

The letter describes Model 1886, serial number 82375, as "Musket, 45/70 caliber" and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on September 15, 1893. Only 350 Model 1886 Muskets were manufactured, the Model 1886 Musket is the rarest of all Winchester lever-action muskets. The musket has a blue barrel, forearm cap, barrel band, bolt and loading gate. The receiver, hammer, lever and carbine style buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The buttplate has a sliding trapdoor. The barrel has a block mounted front sight with steel blade that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet and a military style, folding leaf rear sight. Sling swivels are mounted on the barrel band and stock. The butt trap contains a five-piece jointed steel cleaning rod. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a low-luster varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" between the barrel band and the rear sight. The sides of the receiver have fiery case colors; the case colors on the top and bottom of the receiver are slightly more muted but remain at 95% intact. The case colors on the hammer are dark and there are several small age spots on the back of the lever. The breechbolt has 99% of the bright original high polish blue remaining. The buttplate has 95% of the casehardened finish with some very minor finish wear on the heel. The forearm and stock are excellent. The forearm is free from handling and storage marks. The stock has several shallow storage marks but remains excellent. This is an exceptional example of the Winchester Model 1886 Musket, the rarest of all the limited production Winchester lever action muskets.
