Leather covered handle with two-strand twisted brass wrap, plain style Phrygian helmet pattern pommel. Right side of blade marked ''U.S./1859''. In common dual-ring iron scabbard. Original gold and silver bullion crossed sabers are surmounted by ''10'', with hat cord of similar material. Correct and original gold washed brass eagle-''C'' cord buttons with tarred leather brim. Condition is excellent with one small moth nip to right rear panel and several beneath hat cord. Sweatband with minor soiling and one small separation adjacent to left cord button. U.S. Springfield Officer's Model Trapdoor Rifle

U.S. Springfield Officer's Model Trapdoor Rifle, 3rd Variation with removable pistol grip, NVSN, .45-70 cal., 26'' barrel, single set trigger, checkered walnut stock, SVW/1885 cartouche, along with ''P'' proof at bottom of stock just behind checker point. Decorative nickel silver long pattern forend cap, mid-range vernier tang sight, 1873 type rear sight, with gold Beeches combination front sight. A total of 477 Officer's rifles were produced, with only 100 in this variation. Hickory ramrod with nickel-plated tip. Condition is about fine. Barrel has thinned and toned somewhat. Lightly engraved frame retains approx. 96% strong original blue. Case hardened breechblock, hammer, lockplate and release retain approx. 40%+ thinning and silvering case colors, as does triggerguard. Stock with light scuffs and oil darkening from Plains use. Front of lockplate cutout with very minor losses at most forward edge. Action is crisp, set trigger functions as designed, bore is mirror bright. Many of these 3rd Model Officer's rifles were sold off to such retailers as Bannermans and others in the post-1890 period, where they were refinished in the period style and are often sold as mint originals, which is often not the case. U.S. Model 1876 Cartridge Belt, by Watervliet Arsenal. This narrow belt variation is approx. 42'' long with a body width of 2'' and features 54 belt loops for .45 Gov't or Carbine rifle cartridges, with a varnished brass slightly curved center bar-frame buckle. This early belt was adopted for Cavalry and Infantry use in 1876. This narrow belt is probably the first production of the 1876 cartridge belt, as it is considerably more scarce and much less seldom observed than the later wide belt variations that were first seen in 1879. Condition is fine with minor darkening from age. Also included is an original sealed box of 20 rounds of .45-70 dating from June 1881 by the Frankford Arsenal. Est.: $800-$1,200....more
